School & CommunityAcademia Cotopaxi American International School is a private, independent, coeducational American international day school serving students from preschool (beginning at 18 months) through grade 12 for all nationalities. The School was founded in 1959 and is located in the northern part of Quito.

Academia Cotopaxi is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is recognized by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education and the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and is a member of the Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA). The student body consists of 830 students in three divisions, Early Childhood (Nursery – Grade 2), Intermediate (Grade 3 – 8) and High School (Grades 9 – 12). The student body is multicultural representing more than 30 nationalities. Academia Cotopaxi also has a Spanish-based preschool program, called IMAGINE, for children ages 18 months up to 5 years old.

The School has been on the current 15-acre campus since 1991. Facilities include 69 classrooms; art rooms; a gymnasium; an enclosed heated pool; playing fields; an auditorium; two cafeterias; four science laboratories for biology, chemistry, and physics; and a music complex with band, orchestra, and practice rooms. There are four technology labs, with computers, iPads, projectors, SMART boards and document cameras in use throughout the School. The Library Media Center has over 35,000 volumes and a wide variety of online resources. The IMAGINE campus has 18 classrooms with diaper-changing areas, playgrounds, library, medical office, and multipurpose room.

Academic ProgramStudents in the high school follow a U.S. college preparatory curriculum. The language of instruction is English and graduates earn a U.S. secondary school diploma. In addition, students may elect to also pursue an Ecuadorian diploma or a full International Baccalaureate diploma during their junior and senior years, or enroll in individual IB courses. In order to receive an IB diploma, students must study six subjects during their last two years of high school, 3 “higher” level (HL), 3 “standard” level (SL) and Theory of Knowledge. Also for the diploma the student must engage in an independent research thesis and participate in our CAS program for at least 150 hours of service. To receive a U.S. diploma all students must complete a minimum of 6 Carnegie units each year in order to be promoted to the next grade level. A minimum of 25 units of credits including one credit in Global Citizenship are required for graduation from Academia Cotopaxi.

The high school provides extensive extracurricular activities including National Honors Society, Model United Nations, Music, Drama, Student Government, and Social Action Club. Athletic opportunities include soccer, basketball, volleyball, and swimming.

FacultyIn Academia Cotopaxi, there are 79 professional educators and 47 of them are USA citizens, 20 are Ecuadorian, and 12 third-country nationals. 16 hold bachelor of arts/science degrees, 62 hold masters degrees, and 1 holds a Ph.D. The faculty also includes guidance counselors for each division, college counselors, librarians, school psychologists, instructional coaches, as well as specialists in English for Speakers of Other Languages, special education, reading, and technology integration. The IMAGINE program provides a bilingual preschool education focused on play, exploration, and creativity.
