NEW ROOM FOCUS ON LITERACY RATIONAL

•  Prison populations are projected by the number of children who are below reading grade level by the end of the third grade!

•  Children below grade level at the end of 3rd grade are at high risk to drop out of school.

•  The quality of the future workforce in our community is dependent upon literacy.

NEW ROOM LITERACY PROGRAMS

•  After-School Tutoring •  Literacy Instruction Tutors •  Summer Enhancement

•  Primary focus on reading •  Ensuring students met

their dibble (grade level) reading standards

•  Math •  Science •  Language Arts

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING

SUMMER ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM •  Held during June and

July, 3 days a week for 4 hours a day

•  Focus on reading, math, and arts

•  Provide supplemental nutrition

•  Uses Read Well Program with Ticket to Read technology component

•  Volunteers tutor at Midway Elementary School

•  For 1st and 2nd graders •  Has 10 Volunteers

Who did you serve and what did you accomplish that day?

We served a group of elementary age students in an after-school tutoring program at the New Room.

We were able to teach the students computer fundamentals.

We provided dinner afterwards for the students and community at our Bountiful Table.

We average feeding 80 community members .

EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND SERVICES PRESENTED IN THIS SUBMISSION TO INCREASE THE IMPACT OF OUR EFFORTS FOR LITERACY.
