richtete Nutzung in Bilder umzusetzen.
Mittels grosszgig verglasten Innenhfen entstehen
helle, transparente und offene Arbeitsbereiche und at-
traktive halbffentliche Rume, die eine breite Palette
von Nutzungen bieten. Die Architekten haben die
Tragkonstruktion zu einem weit gespannten Sttzen-
raster aufgelst, die Geschossflchen sind dadurch frei
unterteilbar. Die Haustechnik lsst sich erweitern und
an verschiedenste Nutzungen anpassen.
Starship Enterprise
In the middle of a lush green field justoutside Sursee directly on the motor-way exit a truly remarkable buildingcatches the travellers eye. The curvedshape of this edifice in central Switzer-land reminds the onlooker of a star-
ship rather than a business building. The result of a private competition ofAgro Data AG in 1997, this futuristicbuilding shows its initiators and maintenants intention to portray its future-oriented use. The complicated geome-
try of the outer shell called for the ut-most precision by architects, plannersand craftsmen. The intention was toclearly show the image of a smooth(star)ship hull, which was an extreme-ly demanding task in terms ofconstruction and material. Every storeyextends 30m out from the one under-neath, creating a tilting and dynamicfacade. The substructrure runs at anangle from one ceiling to the next, with ALUCOBOND panels of approx.
400cm in length and 35cm in widthvisibly riveted onto it. The buildersused high-tech materials such as glass, metal and ALUCOBOND to create acomputer valley in the heart of Swit-zerland and of Europe.

Die komplizierte Geometrie der Aussenhaut verlangte
von Architekt, Planern und Handwerkern ein Hchst-
mass an Przision und rumlichem Vorstellungsver-
mgen. Das Bild eines glatten (Raum-)Schiffrumpfes
sollte klar in Erscheinung treten, was hohe Ansprche
an Konstruktion und Material stellte. Jedes Geschoss
ragt um 30cm ber das darunter liegende hinaus,
dadurch entstehen die nach aussen gekippten, dy-
namisch wirkenden Fassaden.
beulungen oder Wellen, was dem gewnschten us-
seren Erscheinungsbild zugute kommt.

The Danish capital is moving east. That is the result of
the opening of the fixed link across resund to Sweden
this year.
Copenhagen Airport is at the centre of the buzzing
Danish-Swedish metropolis, giving passengers quick
access to Downtown Copenhagen and Downtown
Malm in Sweden. With the construction of Termi-
nal 3, Copenhagen Airport has made life easier and
quicker for 17 million travellers.
Terminal 3 has become one of the most talked about
projects, and was designed by the architects SrenDaubjerg and Thomas Scheel of the architects office
Vilhelm Lauritzen. Before Sren Daubjerg started de-
signing Copenhagen Airports Terminal 3 in 1991, he
travelled around the world to see how other cities had
dealt with the task. In his opinion, most airports were
ugly and confusing, often resembling a sports hall.
Ugly and confusing are definitely not words that de-
scribe Terminal 3, according to Sren Daubjerg and to
the press reviews, which have used words such as
beautiful and magnificent.
Sren Daubjerg and Thomas Scheels starting point
has been a functional airport, in which passengers can
easily find their way.The function of the terminal has
defined the form of the building. Terminal 3 has been
given a notable and expressive shape, unlike the exis-
ting, more prosaic terminal complex.Beautiful, high quality materials have also been prio-
ritised by the architects and the client, which is a main
reason for the choice of ALUCOBOND as fascia clad-
ding. Glass, steel and aluminium have been used on
the facades. ALUCOBOND was chosen for the fascia

and eaves cladding because of the smoothness and
rigidity of the panels, combined with their low weight,
which was critical to the load-bearing structures. The
ALUCOBOND panels were prefabricated and trans-
ported as flat panels to the site, bent to the fascia pro-
file and fixed using coloured rivets to a substructure
of aluminium angles. None of the panels were identi-
cal due to the geometry of the fascia.
The ALUCOBOND panels were erected by Kai Ander-
sen A/S, who also undertook the static calculations for
the sub-structure. This was not an easy task, as eachpanel was a different shape thanks to the doubly-
curved geometry of the fascia. The geometry of the
doubly-curved roof structure is defined by a number
of arcs. The line where the large facades meet the roof
structure has a radius of 1.3 km.

Reside ntial building ofcampus Politecnico,
Milan, Italy
The task to refurbish the old residential university building integrated
in a varied architectural context was not easy for the Architect nor for
the facade fabricator. In fact the main facade of the construction is
opposite the new Faculty of Architecture within the prestigious Uni-
versity Campus Politecnico of Milano, and surrounded by residen-
tial houses of different architectural periods.
As the impressive photos show, in the end the target has been su-
perbly met by a modern structure with a slab effect overhanging
the old structure of the existing building as a large and flat sail, hiding
the residential perfectly integrated in the environment without affec-
ting or disturbing at all the surrounding architecture. This high-tech solution has been made feasible by the strict coope-
ration between the facade fabricator SAVOgi and the architect Bruletti
who developed a new concept in the use of ALUCOBOND for facade
cladding.
In fact a large facade 48m wide and 14m high has been made without
any vertical joint being visible, by bonding to each other the vertical
folds of the panels.
The solution was met with the special aluminium frame bonded with
high-tech double adhesive tape to the reverse side of the large
ALUCOBOND panels 1500 x 4000 mm, which allows an easy sliding
of the whole slab on suitable understructure rails, despite of the con-
siderable thermal expansion, without creating any mechanical ten-
sion and keeping a superb flatness of the facade.

Gold Land Building
Dubai (U. A. E.)
The Gold Land Building stands as a prestigious landmark of Dubai
the City of Gold. The building signifies the world-renowned status of
Dubai as the worlds largest Gold market. The project has been aesthe-
tically designed by Eng. Adnan Saffarini, a famous local architect.
The building blends the local flavor of architecture with modern
construction processes and materials. The exterlor of the building is
accented with Islamic style lines and arches. The design of traditional
wind towers, called Badgir is used to complete the look. The exterior
has been given the gold look with 2,500 m2 of ALUCOBOND clad-
ding material in 22-carat gold color. The color choice has been pru-
dently made, not just keeping in mind the theme of gold, but alsobecause this color signifies the color of desert sand, and thus to high-
light the natural geography of Dubai.
The interior of Gold Land has also been designed to live up to the
charm of the exterior. Replete with columns, atrium and skylights, the
interior continues the gold theme by the use of ALUCOBOND clad-
ding material in 24-carat gold color. The interior also carries the an-
tique look, and the overall feel of the place is very much like a souk
(local marketplace). Fifty columns of 1 m diameter and 3 m height
have been cladded with Granite and ALUCOBOND material in the
basement plus four-stories. The atrium structure with ALUCOBOND
cladding material gives the interior a feeling of openness and space.
Additional aesthetic touch has been added by the construction of
ALUCOBOND-clad flower boxes around the balconies of the atrium.
The ground floor is reserved for jewelry retail shops while the upper
floors are meant for Gold wholesale business.
Overall, 6,000 m2 of ALUCOBONDmaterial has been used in the ent-
ire project. The project constructors chose this material for its high
functional quality as well as aesthetic look.

When U. S. Xpress of Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA and the Nashville
office of SSOE, Inc., architects and engineers, spent three days shar-
ing their vision for a new U. S. Xpress headquarters building, they put
something unique in motion. It was the design for a building that would
reflect not only the clients corporate vision but also the sensitivity of
U. S. Xpress to its various publics and its unique environment.
Patrick E. Quinn and Max L. Fuller, Co-chairmen of U. S. Xpress, want-
ed a building that would symbolize high technology and a very for-
ward-thinking organization. It was decided that this image should in-
clude a metal skin. That initial concept involved transformation and
movement. Other touchstones included transition, flow, evolutionand growth.
U. S. Xpress, a trucking company, has led the evolution of trucking
into a technologically sophisticated business, and this building in-
cludes very advanced communications and accounting systems.
ALUCOBOND helped to provide that high-tech image. It provides
good reflectivity, so that the building itself seems to move and its co-
lors transform from gray to green to blue to silver as the sun and
the sky change. We took a standard color and increased the metal-
lic flake and gloss of the color as high as possible to enhance reflec-
tivity. We started with a metallic slate color that became a custom
charcoal gray custom for U. S. Xpress, said David S. Verner, AIA, Vi-
ce President of SSOE, who served as project architect and manager.
The custom color was coil-coated to the material at the Benton,
Kentucky, plant of Alusuisse Composites, Inc., where ALUCOBOND
material is domestically manufactured. The material was fabricated
and distributed by the Kistler-McDougall Company of Atlanta. The
project utilized approximately 70,000 sq. ft. of 4mm ALUCOBOND
material, attached with a rout and return wet seal method.

Paris dispose dun nouvel hpital ultramodeme:
lHEGP, cest--dire lHpital Europen Georges Pom-
pidou.
mtres de long.
rondeur dune place pitonne semi-circulaire.
maximum, explique larchitecte Aymeric Zublena.
dune tonalit claire. Larchitecte a donc choisi un pa-
rement presque blanc. Cette teinte, aujourdhui

Paris now boasts an ultra-modern hos-pital: HEGP, or Hpital Europen Geor-ges Pompidou. Covering an area ofalmost 87 acres, it has a very specialfeature: a pedestrian precinct of 200metres. Despite a right-angular design
on one side, it follows the curve of aroad and the semi-circle of a forecourton the other. Three former hospitalsare now united under the roof ofHEPG, with three main departments:Accident and Emergency, Cardiology
and Cancer. In addition to 820 beds ithas 24 operating rooms. ArchitectAymeric Zublena has chosenALUCOBOND because he had workedwith it successfully before. The facadecovers an area of 25000m2 of 4mm
ALUCUBOND panels which only prot-rude by 30mm. Thi s requires a specialtype of suspension developed in co-operation with a facade expert. Forthis purpose, a special program wasdeveloped by computer experts.
HEPG is situated in an old but refur-bished light-coloured quartier. This iswhy archi tect Aymeric Zublena optedfor light gray shine.
