After three games which have produced two wins and a draw, four goals for and none against, AC Milan are well placed to book their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Matchday 4. A win against RSC Anderlecht, who have never won in Italy, at San Siro will be enough, as long as AEK Athens FC do not do the same against LOSC Lille Métropole in the other fixture in Group H. • A single-goal victory at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium two weeks ago, thanks to Kaká's magnificent strike just before the hour after they had lost defender Daniele Bonera to a red card, put the six-time winners of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in this happy position. With a two-point lead at the head of the section over Lille, Milan will be confident of making it two wins in rapid sucession against the Belgium champions who have two draws to show from their first three fixtures. Strong at home • The Rossoneri do not often slip up at home in this competition. Before Ludovic Giuly's goal for FC Barcelona in last season's semi-final first leg spoiled the sequence, Milan's run showed 12 wins and one draw in 13 games. They continued in that vein on Matchday 1 when they put three unanswered goals past AEK. • Yet visitors from Belgium have caused Milan problems in the past and they have not scored a victory over them in three attempts, Club Brugge KV winning 1-0 at San Siro in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League group stage and drawing 0-0 in the 1990/91 European Cup second round. Previous visit • In between those fixtures, in the 1993/94 group stage, Anderlecht also returned with a 0-0 draw in what was the club's only previous visit to take on the Rossoneri. Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta both featured in that game. • In total Milan have staged nine games against Belgian opponents, winning four and drawing three. • Anderlecht were hopeful that Bonera's dismissal would help their cause two weeks ago but they had no answer to Kaká's brilliance and so lost for the first time in this campaign, their eighth UEFA Champions League participation. That was their first defeat in four games - some contrast to the run of 12 consecutive defeats which was the situation before the Brussels outfit overcame Real Betis Balompié on Matchday 6 last season. Barren run • In 13 visits to Italy, Anderlecht have never returned home celebrating a victory - the records shows they have gained five draws and suffered eight defeats. • Apart from that 0-0 draw away to Milan they have also faced city rivals FC Internazionale Milano on two occasions in the stadium, losing 2-1 and 3-0. Their bid to win a third UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1989/90 was also thwarted by Italian opposition, UC Sampdoria running out 2-0 winners in the Gothenburg final. • Carlo Ancelotti started the match with Gilardino and Maldini on the bench, while Kaká and Seedorf were playedin a supporting role behind lone striker Inzaghi. At half-time Ancelotti took off Inzaghi, Massimo Ambrosini andMarek Jankulovski, with Gilardino, Maldini and Ricardo Oliveira coming on.

• "I'm quite satisfied with the performance of my team and I don't think we played that badly, even in the first half whenwe were 2-0 down," said Ancelotti. "We attacked a lot, scored thee goals and created many other opportunities toscore. In defence we made only one mistake, when they scored their third goal. We are 14 points behind Inter butthe season is long and we have to keep on playing at our best until the end."

• Gilardino's goal was his first with Milan since 22 April when he scored the third in a 3-1 win against FC MessinaPeloro.

• On 27 October Milan's eight-point deduction following July's sports tribunal in Italy was confirmed by the Court ofArbitration of the Italian Olympic Committee.

• On 19 October, Nesta became a father for the first time. His new daughter is named Sofia.

• Milan lost their first game this season when they were defeated 2-0 at home by US Città di Palermo on 22 October. After an even first half, the visitors took the lead early in the second period through Mark Bresciano and went closeto doubling the scoreline when Simplicio hit the post. Milan struck the woodwork themselves through Kaká andAndrea Pirlo before Amauri scored the second.

• Ancelotti started with Gilardino and Inzaghi in attack. Kaká played behind the forwards with Seedorf, Gattusoand Pirlo in midfield. Serginho is still struggling with hernia problems so Jankulovski played at left-back. Maldiniwas rested after returning from a thigh injury, meaning that Kahka Kaladze and Nesta played in central defence.

• "It is not a lucky period for us," Ancelotti said. "We have to create several chances to score one goal, while ouropponents always score with their first attempt. However, Palermo played very well and they have justified ambitionsof winning the title this year. I'm not worried for Milan because we are playing well. We just need to be more clinicalin front of goal."

• He was pleased, therefore, with Jankulovski, as the Czech defender scored the only goal of the game as Milanwon 1-0 at AC Chievo Verona three days later with a stunning long-range shot. The Rossoneri wasted several otheropportunities to score notably through Gilardino, Kaká and second-half substitute Marco Borriello.

• Ancelotti rested Cafu, fielding Bonera as right-back, and Šimić partnered Kaladze with Nesta on the bench. Gattusowas also a replacement with Cristian Brocchi playing in midfield alongside Pirlo and Seedorf. Kaká played behindGilardino and Ricardo Oliveira with Inzaghi rested.

• "We've ended a negative period," Ancelotti said. "We could have scored more goals but I'm satisfied anyway.Jankulovski was a great signing last season and I'm happy he is proving it this term."

• The Czech left-back's goal was his second of the season. The 1-0 victory against Chievo was the first triumph inSerie A for Milan since the win against Ascoli Calcio 1898 on 20 September. On that occasion, Jankulovski alsoscored the only goal of the game.

• Jankulovski, Kaká and Seedorf are the only player to have registered twice or more so far in Serie A for Milan thisseason.

• Prior to Gilardino's first goal of the season against Inter, Milan forwards had not scored since the Serie A openinggame - a 2-1 win against S.S. Lazio in which Inzaghi and Oliveira found the net. Borriello has not struck in anycompetition.

• On 21 October Anderlecht won through to the last 16 of the Belgium Cup by defeating second division KFC DesselSport 5-1. By half-time Anderlecht were already five up thanks to a Frutos penalty, one goal from Hassan, two byTchité and a Serhat Akin effort. Dessel's consolation came on the hour.

"As an Anderlecht fan I amglad, but I would have loved to win here with Dessel. After the match I received the shirt of [Davy] Schollen and thegloves of my idol Zítka. Super, but I don't think I will wear them the next time I come to support Anderlecht, that wouldbe a bit stupid!"

• On 24 October Anderlecht played a friendly at non-league side KSKL Ternat and fell behind to Andy Cuet's earlystrike. However, Sébastien Sianu equalised after an hour and Ternat's Xavier Riestra put through an own goal soonafter to give the Belgian champions a 2-1 win.

I read about a doctor saying onewould lose power, but I gained one kilogram of weight during Ramadan. Where does a person like that get hisinformation? On the contrary, Ramadan gives you power."

UEFA information

Athens finalUEFA will unveil the new visual identity created for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final at a special ceremonyfrom 11.00CET on 9 November in the Ceremonies Hall at the City Hall, Kotzia Square, Athens. The UEFA ChampionsLeague final has, in recent years, been given an identity of its own with a unique logo, a design concept and an overalltheme. The objective is to help promote the final and enhance the prestige of one of the world's biggest sportingevents. The 2007 final will be held on 23 May at the city's Olympic Spyros Louis Stadium.

FARE Action WeekThe global profile of Europe's premier club competition - the UEFA Champions League - has proved an ideal vehicleto spread the word against the evil of racism in football. Matchday 3 saw a number of anti-racist activities to supportthe Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network Action Week against racism, intolerance and discrimination.Activities included the captains of all the teams wearing Unite Against Racism armbands, while player-escort childrensported Unite Against Racism T-shirts.

In addition, announcements were made to fans in stadiums over the loudspeaker systems calling for opposition to allforms of racism, and Unite Against Racism adverts were placed in matchday programmes as well as the official UEFAChampions League magazine Champions. Supporters, players, clubs, associations, minority organisations,anti-discrimination groups, youth centres, schools and the sports media are all involved in campaigning work for theAction Week, which continued until 30 October. Participation by ethnic minorities and migrants, inclusion of womenand girls, and action against homophobia in football are all on the agenda.

UEFA staff made their on-field contribution to the Action Week last Monday with UEFA's staff side and the Geneva-basedHOPE team comprising players of various nationalities braved the pouring rain at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon,Switzerland to help spread the message that racism has no place in the game. UEFA's team ran out 7-1 winners inthe match.

Coach Educators courseSpeaking at last week's 16th UEFA Course for Coach Educators at the Italian Football Federation's (FIGC) technicalcentre in Coverciano, Andy Roxburgh, the UEFA technical director, offered a detailed overview of the proposed A-levelElite Youth Diploma for coaches, which he hopes will raise the standard of youth coaching across the continent. "Thewhole idea of this new licence is to turn today's talents into tomorrow's heroes," said Roxburgh. "Our job is to educatethe coaches because they are the ones involved in the process of turning the talents into heroes."

Marcello Lippi, who led Juventus to the 1996 UEFA Champions League, was a star attraction at the course and in aquestion-and-answer session, he recalled taking his first steps in coaching with the UC Sampdoria youth team in the1970s. "Coaching young people is a mission – at least that is how I felt about it and that's what I want to say toeducators who coach young people. After three years as a youth coach, I realised it was not what I wanted in the longterm. But coaching youngsters should not be viewed as a stop-gap."

UEFA donationsUEFA is to donate CHF2.2m (€1.38m) to its four major Social Responsibility partners for the 2006/07 campaign. Theamount was approved by UEFA's Executive Committee at its recent meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The donations -to be paid out of money raised from fines imposed by the UEFA disciplinary authorities on clubs, players and nationalteams in the 2005/06 season - are being made to the Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia (SOEE) body, the InternationalCommittee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, and the Danish CrossCultures Project Association (CCPA).

Head coach profiles

Carlo AncelottiDate of birth: 10 June 1959Nationality: ItalianPlaying career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC MilanCoaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only five people – the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni, Johan Cruyff and Frank Rijkaard – tohave lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the mosthighly-regarded coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his secondseason at the AC Milan helm - he would have added a second but for Liverpool FC's stunning fightback two yearslater - and has added Serie A and Coppa Italia medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is proving every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started outat AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemedhim too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at San Siro in five years of unyielding successwhich brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996 andwent on to Parma FC who he guided to an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus andalthough he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to San Siro in summer 2001. Therehe thrived, winning the UEFA Champions League, Coppa Italia and UEFA Super Cup in his second season andcompleting the set with the Serie A title in 2003/04. He guided the Rossoneri to second in the next two campaigns, although they were subsequently demoted to third last term as punishment for their involvement in a match-fixingscandal. In March, he extended his contract until summer 2008.

Frank VercauterenDate of birth: 28/10/1956Nationality: BelgianCoaching career: CS Braine (youth) KV Mechelen (youth then head coach), RSC Anderlecht (assistant then headcoach)

Born in Brussels, Frank Vercauteren spent his career as a left-sided midfielder who played 368 matches in 12 seasonsfor RSC Anderlecht, scoring 92 goals and winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978, and the UEFACup in 1983. He won Belgium's Player of the Year award in 1983, and also played for FC Nantes Atlantique and RWDMolenbeek, where he ended his career in 1993.

Vercauteren was a dynamic midfielder who made a key contribution to the Anderlecht side that was considered asone of the best teams in Europe at the time. He was also a pillar of the Belgian national team, winning 63 caps andscoring nine goals. He was a member of the squads for the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, as well as for the 1984UEFA European Championship.

In 1998, he returned to Anderlecht as assistant coach to Arie Haan. Together with former team-mate Jean Dockx, they took over from Haan that September, and led the club from bottom of the table to a European place. He thenbecame assistant again to Aimé Anthuenis and Hugo Broos as Anderlecht added titles in 2000, 2001, 2004. He tookover on a temporary basis from Broos in early February 2005 before signing a two-year contract in April. Althoughhis first UEFA Champions League campaign was a disappointment, he made up for that by securing the Belgian title.

Referee

UEFAUCLDoBNat.Name391909.03.1964GERHerbert Fandel

Whether performing a classical piano piece for an appreciative audience, or refereeing football's superstars in frontof a packed crowd, Herbert Fandel keeps his cool and delivers the goods. Stage fright is out of the question. TheGerman match official, who took charge of Sevilla FC's 4-0 UEFA Cup final defeat of Middlesbrough FC in May, isused to the big occasion, both as a full-time pianist - who runs his own highly successful music school - and one ofEurope's leading referees.

Fandel, a father of two who lives in Kyllburg, close to the Luxembourg border, became the first German to take chargeof a one-off UEFA Cup final in Eindhoven. Having started his refereeing career in 1989, he joined the élite band ofBundesliga officials in 1996 and earned his FIFA badge two years later. His break on the international stage came atthe UEFA European Under-16 Championship in 1998 before he travelled to the 1999 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup inSouth Africa. Appointments at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and Sydney Olympics followed in 2000ahead of the step up to FIFA World Cup qualifying in 2002.

By 2003/04 he was a regular in the UEFA Champions League, taking charge of five matches - rapid progress whichcontinued the following term as he was entrusted with high-profile ties such as AC Milan-Manchester United FC andChelsea FC-FC Porto. Last season was also a successful one in the competition as Fandel was on duty for fourgames, not least the goalless draw at Juventus which saw Arsenal FC reach the semi-finals for the first time. He alsotook charge of his second German Cup final in three campaigns, with FC Bayern München lifting the trophy after a1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list willbe reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubsfrom within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the clubfor two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eightin 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the clubbetween the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at leastthree seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubsfrom simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given agreater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as aconsequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is€750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contractsconcluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe'spremier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA tocover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream inexcess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per centof the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to theclubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m fromTV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of€2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive€2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions Leaguewinners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive,at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by theclubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two orone – participating from a given association.
