Abydos: Named after the ancient city in Egypt whose history begins in the late prehistoric age. The city was used from the first dynasty to the 30th dynasty. The ancients believed the city "opened the way" to all who entered.

In more modern times the city allowed contemporary scholars to unlock the secrets of the ancients when they found the Table of Abydos, which has been called the "Rosetta Stone" of the beginnings of civilization. This Table is the only place where the entire list of dynasties from the 1st to the 30th is carved in stone in one location. It serves as a history to civilization's beginning and a guide to who we have become.

What does “abydos” mean, and what does it have to do with literacy?

Page 8: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

The average reader reads 300 wpm.

So in 15 minutes a day that = 4,500 words/day.

 In 7 days a week, that = 31,500 words/week.

 In 52 weeks a year, that = 1,638,000

words/year.

The average book contains 75,000 words.

Page 9: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

So by reading 15 minutes a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year,

that = approximately 1,000 books in a lifetime. (avg 78 years)

SO WHAT???

Page 10: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

Words Read Per Year %Vocabulary Growth 0 0

100,000 50%400,000 60%1,000,000 80%1,800,000 90%

So by reading 15 minutes a day, gains in vocabulary can be 85% or MORE! Gains in vocabulary = increased student achievement in ALL subject areas!SO ALL SUBJECTS SHOULD READ AND WRITE EVERY DAY!

Page 11: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

There is only one situation I can think of in which men and women make an effort to read better than they usually do. [It is] when they are in love and reading a love letter.

Ludic Reading

Comments/Questions

I can begin or end one class a week with 15 minutes of reading and journaling in the interactive notebook.

I don’t understand what this is or how to use it.

Does reading for pleasure “count”?

Research shows that the more kids read for pleasure, the better they perform at school - in ALL subjects, including math. In fact, the amount of time students spend reading is a better predictor of student success than parent income. This means that students should be reading regularly in all of their classes.

Page 21: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

So how can we combine school reading and pleasure reading?

Discuss in your groups and have one person in your group put an example on the chart paper in the front of the room.

Page 22: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

Combining school and pleasure reading

We can teach students to enjoy reading by:

Giving them choice in what they read

Giving them time to read in class

Giving them time to talk about what they’ve read (in person, in class, in online forums)

Reading aloud to students

Modeling how to make connections to reading by sharing your connections to reading

Inspiring them to read more closely by thinking about (analyzing) what they’ve read (like the love letter)

What are some ways that teachers can make school reading more pleasurable for students?

Page 23: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

“Ludic” comes from the Latin word “ludo,” which means “I play.”

“Galumphing” is another word for pleasure reading.

LUDIC READING OR GALUMPHING CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE – ONLINE, OUTSIDE, BOOKSTORES,

LIBRARIES, CLASSROOMS, ETC.

Discuss your assigned quote with your group.

A – Michael Agger

“We’ll do more and more reading on screens, but they won’t replace paper…Rather, paper seems to be a Prozac – a balm for the distracted mind…”

B – Jakob Nielson“Jakob Nielson, internet usability expert, champions the idea of information foraging. Humans are informavores. On the internet, we hunt for facts. In earlier days, when switching between sites was time consuming, we tended to stay in one place and dig. Now we access a site quickly, looking for an information scent. We move on if there doesn’t seem to be any food around.”

C – Nancie Atwell

“The job of adults who care about reading is to move heaven and earth to put that [one good] book into a child’s hands.”

“Being Lost” by Karla Kuskin

Being lostis the perfect wayto pass the time

on a sky blue daywhen it’s warm

and the open windowuncurtains a call

I am not therewhere they look

I linger alonein a place of my own

“A close reading is a careful and purposeful…rereading of a text. It’s an encounter with the text where students really focus on what the author has to say, what the author’s purpose was, what the words mean, and what the structure of the text tells us…it’s a transction between the reader and the text

Page 31: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

Close reading requires students to actually think and

understand what they are reading.

WE HAVE TO GIVE THEM TEXT DEPENDENT QUESTIONS THAT

REQUIRE THEY GO BACK INTO THE TEXT AND SEARCH FOR THE

ANSWERS.

Define “criticism”of written text.

CRITICISM IS THE EVALUATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF WRITTEN TEXT.

Page 43: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

Old vs. New Perceptions of Criticism

Old Perception of Criticism Criticism was based

on finding connections between an author’s real life and what is happening in the text (considered an outgrowth of life)

New Perception of Criticism The author and his

life are irrelevant. Criticism is confined to what the text actually says (considered a work in and of itself like art)

Page 44: Abydos Reading Training Day 1

STAAR is based on the new perception of criticism.

In order to get an accurate criticism, we should assess only the text. STAAR tests in

all subject areas are based on this new perception of criticism - on an accurate

assessment or analysis of the text based on a close reading. Therefore, we need to teach students to ANALYZE text - to read closely

and make personal connections to the text to give it relevance.

How will I be expected to use this information in my classes?

Teach your students how to read the material for your class CLOSELY. Model this process by speaking your thoughts and showing your annotations as you read a text closely.

Students will read and write in every class every day using the interactive notebooks (with the exception of testing days). Provide thought-provoking question stems based on the content taught for school reading.

Students will have DEAR time at least once a week for 15 minutes. Include a reader response in their interactive notebook.

Include a kinesthetic activity in your lessons at least twice every six weeks.
