I am proud that, in 2019, the Abu Dhabi Festival has arranged for a selection of more than 70 paintings to be displayed at Manarat Al Saadiyat, loaned to us by LIECHTENSTEIN. The Princely Collections. Spanning a period of more than 400 years, these incredible works of art, which date back as far as the 15th century, provide an unparalleled view into the natural beauty of a bygone era and they have never before been seen in this region.

Recognising the importance of cultural heritage, the Princes of Liechtenstein – a principality that celebrates its 300th anniversary this year – have for many successive generations devoted themselves to collecting and preserving works of art. The resulting private collections of paintings, sculptures, engravings and tapestries are widely viewed as some of the most important and to be able to host just a small selection of them here in the UAE’s capital is an inestimable honour.

For us to be able to view and enjoy these priceless artworks is a vital aspect of cultural exchange – something that is more important for global society than ever before. It facilitates dialogue between nations and cultures, increases understanding and, ultimately, promotes tolerance between people across all social spectrums, faiths and backgrounds.

Preservation of the past also helps us to look to the future, and our collaboration with Liechtenstein has resulted in a unique example of cultural exchange. A special residency for five young Emirati artists earlier this year saw them visit the principality and Vienna, where they experienced the Garden Palace and City Palace of the House of Liechtenstein, the Liechtenstein Art Museum, the Hilti Art Foundation, Kunstforum, the Albertina Museum, the Maria Lassnig Foundation and Vienna’s MUMOK Museum – experiences that can be channelled into the works they produce in the coming months and years.

For anyone visiting this landmark exhibition in Abu Dhabi, the works of high profile artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Joos de Momper and Alessandro Bonvicino da Brescia, gen. Moretto, who have featured prominently in the Louvre, Paris, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian Museum Washington and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and many other famous institutions, will surely delight and inspire in equal measure. In this we contribute to building a better tomorrow for each and every one of us, such is the power of culture in bringing people together in unity.

Welcome to the Abu Dhabi Festival 2019.

Huda I. Alkhamis-KanooFounder and Artistic Director, Abu Dhabi Festival

ABOUT ABU DHABI FESTIVALFounded in 2004, the Abu Dhabi Festival was held initially under the patronage of the then Minister of Information and Culture (and now Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This was followed from 2007 to 2011 with the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Today, the Festival is held under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Tolerance.

The Abu Dhabi Festival is now acknowledged to be among the world’s best, successfully positioning Abu Dhabi as a cultural destination and the region’s leading celebration of creativity and the arts. Reflecting the vision of the UAE capital as an international cultural crossroads, the Abu Dhabi Festival is rooted in the principles of the country’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan: tolerance, respect and enlightenment. As a thriving metropolis that places art, education and culture to the fore, the Festival plays an intrinsic role by further expanding the boundaries of creativity and innovation through the arts. Through its Headline Programme as well as youth platforms and community programmes, it permeates the farthest reaches of the UAE, engaging children, young people and adults while providing memorable and meaningful experiences that unite visitors, residents and citizens alike.

Strengthened by a growing network of 30 international partners, each year the Festival brings audiences together to enjoy unique experiences that testify to our common humanity and the deep bonds we share. Always growing, always innovating, it brings the best of the world to Abu Dhabi and takes the very best of Abu Dhabi to the world.

The 16th Abu Dhabi Festival Headline programme will feature more than 100 events, in 25 venues, 543 international artists, with 17 participating countries, more than 18 productions, two co-productions, two commissions and six Arab World debuts.

The Abu Dhabi Festival is presented and organised by Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF). Founded in 1996, ADMAF is one of the oldest, not-for-profit cultural organisations in the Arabian Gulf. Pioneering new artistic practices, it seeks to deepen global cross-cultural dialogue and inspire a renewed interest in the creativity of the UAE and Arab world. Often in partnership with leading national and international institutions, it delivers multidisciplinary initiatives for people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities through the Abu Dhabi Festival, year-round youth platforms and community programmes.

ABU DHABI FESTIVAL 2019Now in its 16th year, the Abu Dhabi Festival continues to be a beacon of cross-cultural understanding, empowering and inspiring humanity across the globe. For 2019, this incredible celebration of arts and culture features more than 100 events, 18 productions, two co-productions and two commissions across 25 venues, with an illustrious mix of artists and genres across Opera, Ballet, Orchestra, Jazz and Flamenco. Underscoring its commitment to championing global cultural exchange, creativity and innovation in the arts and furthering its symphony of global cultures, in 2019 the Festival will celebrate the Republic of Korea as its ‘Country of Honour’.

This year the Festival’s central theme is the ‘Culture of Determination’, as it joins forces with the Special Olympics World Games that are also taking place in the UAE capital during the month of March, in celebration of everyone who battles against the odds to make a positive impact on society. This theme is one each of us can relate to, and the brave Olympians who will be competing here are inspirational human beings whose drive and determination, in the face of often great adversity, should bring joy and hope to everyone.

Presenting more than 500 international artists from 17 different countries, and featuring masterpieces by 18 different composers, Abu Dhabi Festival 2019’s headline programme includes soulful performances by American mezzo-soprano, Joyce DiDonato with Orchestra il pomo d’oro, directed by Maxim Emelyanychev; Korea’s first professional ballet company, the Korean National Ballet; one of Korea’s leading theatre orchestras, the Korean Symphony Orchestra; award-winning American jazz piano extraordinaire, composer, producer, educator and Quincy Jones Artist, Justin Kauflin; Welsh bass-baritone, Sir Bryn Terfel; Sara Baras, considered one of the best flamenco dancers and choreographers in the world; and, to conclude the Festival, a performance by the oldest national ballet company, The Paris Opera Ballet, by George Balanchine.

The Festival will also host a compelling exhibition entitled Distant Prospects, presenting the history of European landscape painting from the world-renowned LIECHTENSTEIN. The Princely Collections, including permanent loans from The Hohenbuchau Collection and other private collections. Exhibited for the first time in the Middle East, these artworks – some of the world’s most important – survey the history of landscape painting over the course of several centuries and the exhibition will feature key figures in the Late Renaissance and Baroque artistic movements.Parallel to the exhibition, an engaging educational programme will inspire visitors with panel discussions, guided tours and creative workshops. Extending the programme further afield, a specially designed residency will offer a unique experience for five practicing Emirati artists who will be given the opportunity to visit Vaduz and Vienna through a diverse itinerary of cultural engagements.

In line with its legacy to champion culture in all its forms, the Festival will also recognise outstanding achievements in the music industry by prolific musical pioneers through the Abu Dhabi Festival Awards. This year’s recipients include Joyce DiDonato, in recognition of her life long contribution to music; Aurélie Dupont, for her outstanding devotion to the art of ballet; Barenboim – Said Akademie, for its commitment to building bridges through arts and culture; and the late Ousha bint Khalifa Al Sweidi in honour of her exceptional contributions to Emirati poetry.

DISTANT PROSPECTS | ABOUT THE EXHIBITIONTo understand the significance of the collection of artworks that has been presented for the

Abu Dhabi Festival 2019’s Distant Prospects exhibition, we must understand the importance of

landscape painting within a wider context.

Landscape painting as subject and pictorial motif had to contend a long time for its

autonomous role. Landscape depictions have indeed existed since classical antiquity, where

they were integrated as small cabinet pieces into an otherwise strictly architectural corset and

only as an exception reached monumental dimensions in floor mosaics.

Not until the thirteenth century do such landscape elements crop up again increasingly as the

background for pictures devoted to a narrative of Christian themes or, later, motifs from ancient

mythology. We still encounter panels even in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in which

a saint or a religious narrative provides the title, but the real aim was to depict a landscape.

These early examples were painted almost exclusively on carefully prepared wooden panels,

later superseded – although not always – by canvas as substrate. In fact, Biedermeier painting

of the early nineteenth century used the wooden panel, quite within this tradition of the Old

Masters. The material made it possible to produce the richly detailed and extremely nuanced

pictures demanded particularly of landscape pictures, typical of Flemish, Dutch and indeed

Viennese Biedermeier painting.

Landscape painting attained its autonomy and initial heyday in seventeenth-century Flemish

and Dutch landscape painting, Holland’s Golden Age, when it joined portrait and genre

painting as one of the major export hits, especially in the Northern Netherlands (Holland).

Specialists emerged for seascapes and cityscapes, inundating the market throughout Europe

with their pictures. Many artists evaded the enormous competition in their home country

and went to Rome, where they formed their own association and infused their painting with

the light of the south. Both here and in the north – whither they frequently returned – this

resulted in an strikingly atmospheric painting style that evoked life, movement and moods with

unprecedented intensity, Seascapes portray with great realism the might and perils of the sea

and the marine catastrophes they cause, also the great naval battles. In the landscapes the

light changing during the day and its course towards nocturnal, moonlit scenes are taken as

autonomous subjects for depiction.

In reflection and celebration of this genre, Distant Prospects brings to Abu Dhabi an extensive

collection of European landscape paintings from the fifteenth to nineteenth century, following

the practice from early beginnings in Italy, through to the Late Renaissance, Baroque and

nineteenth century developments. Within this collection we are offered a window into the

past, allowing the visitor to become a witness to glorious spectacles, fierce clashes, powerful

seascapes and stunning vast expanses.

In parallel with the Emirati artist residency programme, the Abu Dhabi Festival exhibition has

connected two nations – Liechtenstein and the United Arab Emirates – with the passion of

collecting, and a deep respect for the history of visual art.

LIECHTENSTEINTHE FAMILY AND ITS COLLECTIONS

The history of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein goes back to the thirteenth century, when its beginnings can be documented in the environs of Vienna. There, on a lichter (bright) – stein (rocky massif) they erected their first mighty edifice, the Feste Liechtenstein – the Liechtenstein Stronghold – the name, according to tradition, the family gave to it. This possession was lost to the family through expropriation at the end of the fourteenth century; it was not until the nineteenth century that Prince Johann I was able to buy it back.

After this expropriation, the family’s endeavours mainly concentrated on increasing their possessions in Vienna, in the areas north of the city and in neighbouring Southern Moravia and Bohemia (today the Republic of Czechoslovakia), where they ultimately advanced to become the most powerful economic force.

Page 19: Abu Dhabi Festival - European Landscape Paintings from … · 2019-05-21 · International Community School International Music Institute Korean Cultural Centre L’Ecole Van Cleef

This growth was accompanied by the creation and systematic enlargement of the art collections. Priority of mention must be given here to the collecting activities of Prince Karl I in the early seventeenth century – he was a member of the court of the Habsburg emperor, Rudolf II, who at the time ruled the Habsburg Monarchy, not from Vienna but from Prague. Rudolf wanted to turn the city, in his time, into a new Athens, and entrusted his art collection, and the many artists living in Prague, to his palatine at court, Karl, who astutely exploited the opportunity of this contact with the artists, especially after Rudolf’s death.

His collecting activity was consistently followed up by all his successors; each of the princes commissioned, purchased or sold in total hundreds of artworks, always with an eye on enhancing the quality of the collections. This collecting activity most certainly reached a climax around 1700 under Prince Johann Adam Andreas I – by the time of his death in 1712 probably around 50 paintings by Peter Paul Rubens were to be found in the collections, which still hold 36 today. It was also he who gave great impetus to the princely building programmes and erected the palace in the Vienna city centre (Bankgasse) and the princely Summer Palace (in the suburb of Rossau), both still owned by the family. In 1705 he presented his integrated collection for the first time in the town palace and, by 1810, this had grown considerably and was relocated to the Summer Palace. Here it was open to the general public with an admission fee until 1938.

Prince Johann Adam Andreas was also the one who, by purchasing the two small counties of Vaduz and Schellenberg located between Austria and Switzerland nearly four hundred miles west of Vienna, acquired a territory that in 1719 was elevated by Emperor Charles VI into an independent imperial principality. He thus laid the foundation stone for the State of Liechtenstein, which this year is celebrating its 300th anniversary. The head of state is the ruling Prince von und zu Liechtenstein, Hans-Adam II.

This state as their domain, with its capital of Vaduz, was the family refuge in 1938, when the Nazis occupied Vienna; it has been the family residence since August 1938. The collections of the Princely House were also relocated there from 1938 to 1945. After the costly and radical refurbishment of the two Viennese palaces, approximately 400 works of art are once more presented there today, in changing constellations.

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the princely family lost all its significant possessions, land, industries and their chateaux with many works of art, to the state (then Czechoslovakia, which was Communist from that year.) They have never been restituted. In the early days after these losses the family was only able to survive materially by selling important artworks – star works today, like the Portrait of Ginevra de’ Benci by Leonardo da Vinci, now in the National Gallery in Washington.

The present ruler, Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein, born in 1945, has managed to put the financial status of the house on a new, stable footing. In the meantime he has acquired more than a thousand top-class artworks for the collections and thus consolidated its significance as the most valuable, truly private art collection in the world.

ABOUT THE ABU DHABI FESTIVAL ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

In line with its ongoing objective to support and develop the artistic practice of UAE National artists, ADMAF designed an intensive one-week programme which offered five Emirati artists from its Nationals’ Gallery a unique opportunity to visit significant institutions of arts and culture in Vaduz, Liechtenstein and Vienna, Austria.

With visits to historically monumental points of interest such as the Liechtenstein City and Garden Palaces, the artists were plunged into centuries of rich visual history, counter balanced by compelling exhibitions in celebrated modern and contemporary institutions like the Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) and the Albertina Museum Vienna. Over the course of the six-day programme, the artists also attended the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at Musikverein and visited the private atelier of artist Peter Kogler.

Through this Residency Programme, which was supported by Huda and Mohamed Kanoo, ADMAF provided a vital opportunity for the Emirati artists to develop and shape their artistic practice within an international context while facilitating important

cultural dialogue between them and their contemporaries overseas, culminating with them meeting the UAE Ambassador to Austria, H.E. Hamad Al Kaabi. Under the guidance of ADMAF Advisor, Princess Irina zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, and supported by the mentorship of established artist Aisha Juma, the participants in the residency embraced their surroundings with extraordinary passion for their own artistic development while benefitting from one another’s unique perspectives.

Speaking of the residency, Alexandra Hanzl, Curator and Deputy Director of LIECHTENSTEIN. The Princely Collections, said: “Art is an international language, and as such the Abu Dhabi Festival 2019 – Visual Arts Residency Programme is an appropriate occasion to start a fruitful cross-border dialogue in connection with our forthcoming exhibition: Distant Prospects. European Landscape Paintings from LIECHTENSTEIN. The Princely Collections. It remains for me to congratulate the organisers on this initiative and to await with keen interest the future impact of this project.”

SKETCHING PERSPECTIVES

Wednesday 6 March, 3 - 5 PM | Tuesday 19 March, 3 - 5 PM

By the late 15th century, artists in Europe were in total command of linear perspective, which gives artwork the illusion of depth through the concept of a vanishing point. After viewing multiple excellent examples of the three-dimensional world in landscape paintings from The Princely Collections, participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at drawing their own masterpiece.

Drawing materials, paper and expertise will be supplied to all participants. The workshop is free to attend, however registration is a must as numbers are limited.
