Collage is a great way to attempt to abstract an image that you are attracted to.

This collage was achieved by slicing one image into pieces. Each piece of this puzzle has another piece of the same size within the image. To reorder the photo, pieces of similar shape were simple switched to create a new and interesting way to look at this image.

This collage was achieved in the same way– the image was sliced into three shapes and the top and bottom shapes were switched while the center an outside remained in place. This has created an interesting abstraction using only one image.

As we look at these collages for drawing inspiration, notice that they have been made by using straight lines and simple geometric shapes (squares, rectangles, and triangles). You will be working in this same way to create a collage to draw from.

To create this collage the artist had to have more than one copy of the image she was working with. Sliced sections of one image have been added to an original to create this exploding sensation.

This collage uses a single image. Four squares of descending sizes were cut out of the image, the outer two have been turned upside down to disrupt the image– this can be another interesting way to reorganize an image.

Two images have been used in this collage. They were sliced into long triangles and reordered.

This is another instance where the artist used multiple copies of the same image to deconstruct and reorder the image.

This artist began with multiple images and cut them apart using similar shapes– both diamonds and triangles. In a way you can liken these sort of reorganizations to piecing a quilt. You will be fitting images together using simple geometries.

Achieved by using two images of faces, this collage works well because the artist simple cut the photos into same diamond shape, making it very easy to reorganize the image. Notice that the artist decided to keep the pieces all oriented in the proper direction in this image making it possible to use to still see the original faces.

Your assignment is to make a small collage by reordering one or two images as we have seen in the previous examples. Once the collage is complete you will make a drawing based on the collage. You will have two class periods to complete the collage and resulting drawing.
