ABSTRACT THE EFFECTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF FENNEL SEED (Foeniculum vulgare) AGAINST Propionibacterium acnes INHIBITION By IQBAL LAMBARA PUTRA Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) contains flavonoids and essential oils which have several benefits, including antifungi, antiviral, antiallergenic, antiinflamatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antibacterial. This study was conducted to determine the effectivity of antibacterials in fennel seed against Propionibacterium acnes. This study was held on July to December 2018 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung. Fennel seed extract was obtained from the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, University of Lampung with maceration techniques which were then diluted to obtain ethanol extract of fennel fruit with concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 40%. The antibacterial activity of fennel seed extract was carried out in vitro using the disc diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton Agar media. This study showed the presence of inhibitory zones formed at fennel fruit concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 40%, with the highest inhibitory power at a concentration of 40% which is 11.44 mm. The conclusion of this study is that fennel seed has antibacterial effect on Propionibacterium acnes. Keywords: Disc diffusion, fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, Propionibacterium acnes

EFEKTIVITAS EKSTRAK ETANOL BUAH ADAS (Foeniculum vulgare)

TERHADAP DAYA HAMBAT Propionibacterium acnes

Buah adas (Foeniculum vulgare) memiliki kandungan flavonoid dan minyak atsiri

yang memiliki beberapa manfaat, yaitu sebagai antifungi, antivirus, antialergi,

antiinflamasi, antioksidan, antikarsinogenik, dan antibakteri. Penelitian ini

dilakukan untuk mengetahui efektivitas antibakteri pada buah adas terhadap

Propionibacterium acnes. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan Juli sampai

Desember 2018 di Laboratorium Mikrobiologi Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu

Pengetahuan Alam dan Laboratorium Mikrobiologi Fakultas Kedokteran

Universitas Lampung. Ekstrak buah adas didapatkan dari Laboratorium Kimia

Organik Universitas Lampung dengan teknik maserasi yang kemudian dilakukan

pengenceran sehingga didapatkan ekstrak etanol buah adas dengan konsentrasi

10%, 20%, dan 40%. Aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak buah adas dilakukan secara in

vitro menggunakan metode disc diffusion pada media Mueller-Hinton Agar. Hasil

penelitian ini menunjukan adanya zona hambat yang terbentuk pada konsentrasi

buah adas 10%, 20%, dan 40%, dengan daya hambat tertinggi pada konsentrasi

40% yaitu sebesar 11,44 mm. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa buah adas memiliki efek

antibakteri terhadap Propionibacterium acnes.
