THE RELATIONSHIP OF KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE WITH THE PRECAUTIONS OF HIV/AIDS TRANSMISSION ON TRANSVESTITES IN PADANG CITY ABSTRACT Cases of HIV/AIDS in West Sumatra province until December 2012, is as many as 133 cases of HIV positive and 120 cases of AIDS, with the largest number of cases is occured in Padang city and Bukittinggi that is 79.3% and 21.05% respectively. The most influenced risk factor is through a sexual relationship amounted to 32%, and among the 40 transvestites sex peddlers who have been under the guidance of the APP (Aia Pacah Peduli)—an NGO, there are 5 transvestites with HIV positive. In the prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission which is caused by transvestites sex peddlers, taking good actions in the prevention of this disease is needed, one of them is by using condom during having sex with their customers. This research is an observational analytic study with cross sectional study approach. It has total sample of 40 transvestites sex peddlers (the whole population). This research aims to analyze the relationship of knowledge and attitude with the precautions of HIV/AIDS transmission on transvestites in Padang city. analyze the relationship of knowledge and attitude with the precautions of HIV/AIDS
transmission on transvestites in Padang city. Data analysis uses statistical test of chi-square.
The results showed that 65% of transvestites sex peddlers take good preventive action, 70%
of transvestites sex peddlers have sufficient knowledge and 52.5% of transvestites sex
peddlers show that they took medium attitutude related to prevention of HIV/AIDS
transmission. Chi-square test results showed that the two independent variables are
significantly correlated with the dependent variable (p value < 0,05), that is knowledge
variable (p value = 0,040) and attitude (p value = 0,048).
Although the results of this study indicates that the level of knowledge of transvestites sex
peddlers is high, but some of transvestites sex peddlers still have insufficient knowledge
about HIV/AIDS and its spreading. It is recommended to do activities that can increase their
knowledge about HIV/AIDS and take persuasive approach between NGO with the groups of
transvestites sex peddlers in order to improve attitudes that affect actions in prevention of
HIV/AIDS transmission.
