Please join me in thanking our diligent Execuve Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Brunet‐Jailly for his dedicaon, energy and true commitment to make ABS a world class organizaon. As we all know we have come a long way in the last 5 years and Emmanuel’s hard work has been at the center of this recovery. Also, let us congratulate our new President, Dr. Heather Nicol, who has already been working hard organizing what should be an excing meeng in Salt Lake City. I am delighted to inform you that we signed an agreement with the Taylor & Francis Group under the imprint of Routledge to publish and distribute the Journal of Borderlands Studies. This agreement will greatly benefit ABS. It will enhance distribuon while increasing resources for our associaon. This is a much welcome change. Let us thank our Board of Directors and Emmanuel for their leadership in this regard. We have also completed a first revision of ourrent bylaws. As things move along, it may be necessary to take another look at them in the near future. In a previous message, I encouraged us to think about the future of ABS, and to the emerging opportunies and challenges we will face. I suggested taking a closer look at our demographics to see how this shapes our collecve identy and our future direcon. This issue is sll very much on the table. As a scholarly organizaon: Who are we? Who do we want to be? Where do we want to go? In my view, this should be an ongoing conversaon among all ABS members. Another aspect that requires our aenon is the need to think about new ways to meet and interact as a professional organizaon in order to maximize intellectual and professional synergies. From my perspecve, a key aspect of this conversaon is our relaonship with WSSA. In recent mes some ABS members have raised the following quesons: Would it be possible for us as an organizaon to consider meeng annually in border regions? Can we think of other modes and models of meeng and interacng? As an independent organizaon that meets concurrently with WSSA it may be a producve exercise to take a closer look at this alliance. Perhaps this is the me to begin a dialogue about this issue. I invite you to bring your ideas to our listserve and to our conference. In closing, my thanks go to all of you again for making last year a successful year. I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City. Warm regards, Javier Duran ABS President 2010-11 1 of 16

Editorial:

A few years ago, this was a dream for some of us, a dream nearly realizedinthe1990sbutnottransformedintorealityuntilnow.Ourjournal,thejournaloftheAssociationforBorderlandsStudies,the Journal of Borderlands Studies (JBS),isnowpartofthepublicationstableof the Routledge group/Taylor and Francis. The last number produced attheUniversityofVictoria(UVic),BritishColumbia,Canadawasmailednearly a month ago. Volume 25(3&4) is a double number that celebrates this achievement. The UVic team is extremely proud to have served the AssociationforBorderlandsStudiessuccessfullyinthisendeavour.

So looking back, let us elaborate on why we think JBS is a wonderful interdisciplinarypublication.JBSiscurrentlyunderreviewbyThomsonReuters, formally ISI web of Knowledge, and will soon be reviewed by the Social Science Index. Also, both Elsevier and Routledge had identifiedJBSasjustbelownecessarynumbersofcitationsto‘buyintoit’forsevenyearsatour2009ABSmeeting.Finally,whatmattersmostto us is that today JBS belongs to a great press, Routledge/Taylor and Francis (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/RJBS), and remains the icon of thewonderfulscholarlyAssociationforBorderlandsStudies.Thismeansthatwritingforthisjournalallowsscholarstoengagecolleaguesaroundthe world who share the same interests. Indeed, in 2011 we will have wellover200membersinnearly30countriesonallcontinents. Furthermore, within the next two or three years JBS should be establishedinwellover300librariesworldwide.Inthemeantime,itis available electronically through the Routledge library network that includes nearly 10,000 libraries worldwide.

Journal of Borderlands Studies, a Routledge Publication

Please note that although it is becoming a more expensive library subscription,JBSwillremainavailabletoourmembersinprintandonline,andourJBSarticledatabasenowcontainsnearly300papers(http://uvic.ca/borderlands).

Obviously, none of this was possible without the support of the membership, but we need to point especially to the work of our board ofdirectors, oureditorialandinternationaladvisoryboards, particularlytheir chairs, Joan Anderson (San Diego) and David Newman (Ben Gurion),andtheexecutivemembersoftheABS;pastpresidentTonyPayan (UTEP), president Javier Duran (Arizona), our president elect HeatherNicol(Trent),vice‐presidentChristineBrenner(Rutgers),anddeputy vice-president Victor Konrad (Carleton) whose kind stewardship and ongoing support and advice made all this possible in 2010. Evert Lindquist,DirectoroftheSchoolofPublicAdministration, andMary Ellen Purkis, Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development at the UVic provided advice and resources. Finally, without the daily supportandoutstandingprofessionalismoftheUVicteam, specificallyJenniferGuest,ArielleGuetta, andTheaVakiloftheCPSS,thiswouldhave never happened.

Due to the dramatic changes in global affairsrelated to regional integration, studies can nolonger be limited to the analysis of economic competitiveness and political power in globalgeopolitics. Regions and Cohesion is a neededplatform for academics and practitioners alike to disseminate both empirical research and normative analysis of topics related to human and environmental security, social cohesion, andgovernance. It covers themes, such as the management of strategic resources, environmentand society, social risk and marginalization, disasters and policy responses, violence, war andurban security, the quality of democracy, develop-ment, public health, immigration, human rights, organized crime, and cross-border human security.

Interdisciplinary in nature and multi-lingual in character (English, French, Spanish),the journal promotes the comparative examination of the human and environmentalimpacts of various aspects of regional integration across geographic areas, time periods, and policy arenas.

BORDER STUDIES

Gender Violence at the U.S.–Mexico BorderMedia Representation and Public ResponseEdited by HÉCTOR DOMÍNGUEZ-RUVAL-CABA, and IGNACIO CORONAContributors to this volume propose that the study of gender-motivated violence requires interpretive and analytical strategies that draw on methods reaching across the divide between the social sciences and the humanities. Through such an interdisciplinary conversation, the book examines how such violence is (re)presented in oral narratives, newspaper reports, films and documentaries, novels, TV series, and legal discourse.224 pp. / $50.00 cloth

Human Rights along the U.S.–Mexico BorderGendered Violence and InsecurityEdited by KATHLEEN STAUDT, TONY PAYAN, and Z. ANTHONY KRUSZEWSKIFrom the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico, scholars from both sides of the 2,000-mile border reflect expertise in disciplines ranging from international relations to criminal justice, conveying a more complex picture of the region than that presented in other studies.248 pp. / $50.00 Cloth / $24.95 Paper

The Borders of InequalityWhere Wealth and Poverty CollideÍÑIGO MORÉ; Translated by LYN DOMINGUEZIn this fascinating book, originally published in Spain to much acclaim, researcher Íñigo Moré engages in a comparative study of twenty of the most unequal borders on Earth. What he finds is that many of these border situations share similar characteristics. There is always illegal immigration from the poor country to the wealthy one. There is always trafficking in illegal substances. And the unequal neighbors usually regard each other with suspicion or even open hostility.192 pp. / $45.00 Cloth

The Colonias ReaderEconomy, Housing and Public Health in U.S.–Mexico Border ColoniasEdited by ANGELA J. DONELSON and ADRIAN X. ESPARZAThis is the first book to present a broad overview of these communities, offering a glimpse into life in the colonias and the circumstances that allow them to continue to exist—and even grow—in persistent poverty. The contributors document the depth of existing problems in each state and describe how government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and community activists have mobilized resources to overcome obstacles to progress.304 pp. / $24.95 Paper

“I Know It’s Dangerous”Why Mexicans Risk Their Lives to Cross the BorderLYNNAIRE M. SHERIDANAs an Australian national, Lynnaire Sheridan brings a refreshingly neutral voice to this hot-button topic. With data gathered over two years of living in Baja California, Mexico, Sheridan draws out individual stories, motivations, and conceptions of risk that ultimately allow us a deeper understanding of migration. Sheridan enriches the migrants’ stories with in-depth interviews. These narratives show us that risk has become a strong motivating factor for migrants and that stricter border policies have not necessarily stemmed the rates of migration; they have merely changed how people migrate. 232 pp. / $24.95 Paper

The Law Into Their Own HandsImmigration and the Politics of ExceptionalismROXANNE LYNN DOTYDoty examines the social and political contexts that have enabled anti-immigrant civilian groups to flourish and gain legitimacy amongst policy makers and the public. The sentiments underlying the vigilante movement both draw upon and are channeled through a diverse range of organizations whose messages are often reinforced by the media. Taking action when they believe official policy is lacking, groups ranging from elements of the religious right to anti-immigrant groups to white supremacists have created a social movement. 176 pp. / $19.95 Paper
