We are delighted to say that the year just passed, proved to be extremely encouraging from a recruitment perspec-tive.Therecruitmentindustryshowedanotablelevelofincreasedactivity.Againthesentimentcouldhavebeendescribedasoptimisticandtherecertainlyseemedtobeasensethat“theworst”waswellbehindus.

WecanonlyspeakfromourownexperiencebutIrelandInc’sreputationparticularlyintheUSseemstohavebeenwellandtrulyrestored.Irelandremainsaveryattractivelocationformultinationalslookingtosetupoperationsoverseasandmoreparticularly,apreferentialmarketinwhichtoheadquartertheirEuropeanbusiness.Wearedelightedtosaythatwesupportedanumberofexistingandstartupmultinationalswithhighvolumerecruitmentengagementsaswellasoneoffnichehiringrequirements.

TobackuptheincreaseinthenumberofmultinationalrecruitmentassignmentsthatwehandledtheIDAan-nouncedinJanuary2012ajumpofalmost20percentinforeigndirectinvestment(FDI)during2011whichcore-latedin13,000newjobsbeingcreated.IDAIrelandsaidtherewasarecordnumberof148newinvestmentswonduringtheyearacrossallindustrysegments.Mostencouragingly,therewasanincreaseof30%inthenumberofcompaniesinvestinginIrelandforthefirsttime.

Thatsaid,thedomesticmarketherestillremains“sluggish”.SpecificmarketsthatcontinuetofacechallengesduetothecontinuingdropinconsumerspendingareHospitalityandCatering,Retail,ManufacturingandConstruction.

Wehavemadeanumberofchangestoourownbusinessduring2011.Asisourcompanypolicywehavecontinuedtogrowthecompanyby25%yearonyearbothintermsofheadcountandrevenue.WearedelightedtosaythatwestrengthenedourteamwithanumberofstrategichiresintotheITandInsurance&ActuarialMarketsinordertomeetthedemandofourclients.Weagainmovedtolargerofficesthatwillallowustocontinuetogrowoverthenext12months.WewillberollingoutournewwebsitetogetherwithourrebrandtowardstheendofQ12012.Watch this space!

Outlook 2012

Onamacro-level,2011wasverymuchayearoftwohalves,particularlywithregardstosentiment.Thefirsthalfoftheyearshowedimprovedeconomicfiguresandpredictions,leadingtoabeliefbymanythatthecornerIrelandhasbeenlookingtoturnforsometimenowhadfinallyarrived.AEurozonecrisiscompoundedbyactions,andinmostcasesinactions,fromEuropeanleaderscoupledwithlessthanfavourableIrishexchequertaxreturnsdealtasignifi-cantblowtothesummertimeoptimism.

Thestartof2012seestheuncertaintythatwasprevalentforthesecondhalfof2011stillverymuchinplaceintheIrishandworldeconomies.WeretheEurozonemattertoberesolvedsuccessfullyandoverashortperiodoftime,itwouldgivearealboosttotheeconomicoutlook.TheUSeconomydidshowsignsofrecoverytowardthesec-ondhalfof2011.Thisgivesusrealoptimismthattheremaybeageneralimprovementintheworldeconomy.Thiswouldundoubtedlyhaveapositiveknock-oneffectfortheexport-reliantIrisheconomy.

AEuropean-widepieceoflegislation,theAgencyWorkersDirective(AWD),couldhaveabigimpactfortherecruit-mentindustryinIrelandin2012.ThisisverymuchdependentonhowitislegislatedforbytheDáil.Thereiseverypossibilitythatitcouldleadtoadecreaseindemandfortemporaryworkerstobereplacedbyanincreaseinthenumberofpermanentrolescreatedcausingasqueezeupwardsinpermanentsalaries.Further,thisincreasemaynotequaltheamountoftemporaryroleswhichpotentiallymightbelost,possiblyresultinginareductioninthenumberofpeopleemployed.

The recruitment market, although not shielded from the marco-economic outlook, appears to be in good health facinginto2012.Mostsectorsarestillfacedwiththechallengesofidentifyingkeyresources,withprofessionalspossessingspecialisedskill-setsasmuchindemandasbefore.AccordingtoIBEC,initssurveyofIrishCEOs,ap-proximatelyonequarter(23%)ofcompaniesexpecttoseeincreasesinsalariesin2012,withjust5%anticipatingareductioninsalaries.TheseresultsreflectAbriviaRecruitment’sexperienceandfeedbackfortheyearaheadtoowithsomesectorslikeIT,likelytoseeitsconsistentupwardtrendcontinueunabatedoverthenexttwelvemonths.

2011 in ReviewWesawaslightincreaseinthevolumeofrolesthatwereceivedfromintheAc-countancyFinancialServicesmarketin2011.Wecanpointtoourowninternalnumbersandsaythatspecificallytherewasa6%increaseinthevolumeofrolesthatwereceivedfromourclients.

AllsectorswithintheFinancialServicesmarketreflectedthisimprovedvolumeofactivitywhichincludesBanking,InsuranceandFunds.Overall,salariesandpackagesremained“steady”withonlysomemarginalincreasesfor“hardtofillpositions”.

CandidatesthatwereindemandincludedFinancialReportingAccountantsinFundswithgoodUSandUKGAAPskills.ManyclientswerelookingforcandidateswithexposuretoSolvencyIIeitherwithinthedomesticmarketorreturningfromover-seascountriesespeciallytheUK.WealsosawthecontinuingtrendinthemarketofmoreaccountantsmovingintotheareasofCompliance,RiskandInternalAudit.

Expectations for 2012Weverymuchsee2012asbeingayearofconsolidationintheAccountancyFinan-cialServicesmarket.Thereisstillsignificantuncertaintyinthefinancialmarketsinternationallyandthiscoupledwithachallengingdomesticfinancialservicesenvi-ronmentmeansthatthereislikelytobelimitedopportunitiesintheIreland.Obvi-ouslyithasbeenwellflaggedintheIrishFinancialServicessectorthatanumberofinstitutionsarebeginningorwillcontinuetointroducefairlyelaboraterestructuringprogrammes.

2011 in ReviewThe2011Industry&CommerceAccountancymarketverymuchreflectedtheover-allimprovementexperiencedbytherecruitmentindustryinIreland.Thismeantthattherewasanupwardcurveforthenumberofpositionsregisteredbyclientswithourselves.IntotaltheIndustry&CommerceAccountancymarketwasupbyasmuchas12%on2010levelsandpeakedinSeptember2011.

Tothesurpriseofmanyclients,certainkeyaccountancyskillsetswerestillverydif-ficulttofindinthemarket,oneofthosebeingInternalAudit.Wefoundthatthereappearedtobeashortageofrecentlyqualifiedaccountantsinthemarketcomingfrompracticeandindustry.Thiscouldbedowntotheincreasedvolumeofrolesinthemarketandtheheightenedcompetitionfromclientsforqualityqualifiedcandidates.

SectorsthatcontinuedtoshowstronggrowthincludedtheFMCG,PharmaceuticalandHi-Tecindustries.Giventhattheexportsectorremainedverystrongformuchof2011itwasnosurprisethatalargeproportionofourclientsthatwerehiringweremultinationalsandIrishPlc’s.Awelcometrendinthemarketwasthatasig-nificantportionofourclientsreinstatedbonuses.Onefinaltrendisthatwenoticedmoreclientscomingtoustohelpthemfillmidandjuniorlevelfinancepositions.

Expectations for 2012Thesentimentformostclientsisoneofcautiousoptimism.Thereisasensethatthe“worstisover”fromamarketperspective.ThatsaidtheuncertaintyovertheEurozonecrisisremainsveryunhelpful.

Withthisinmindweexpectthatmanyofourlargeandagrowingportionofoursmallandmediumsizedclients,whohavelessexposuretothedomesticmarket,willcontinuetoperformstronglyandthereforelooktohiretalentedfinanceprofes-sionals.Itislikelythatthedemandforrecentlyqualifiedaccountantsfromindustrywillremainhigh.Thiswillmeanthatthecompetitiontoattractandretainthebestyoungaccountantswillagainprovedifficultforclients.

2011 in Review:2011wasabuoyantyearinthepracticemarket.Theincreaseinrecruitment,particularlybylargefirms,whichstartedinthelatterhalfof2010continuedrightthroughout2011.Itwasencouragingtonotethatlargerfirmswererecruitingacrossallareasincludingaudit,restructuring,consultingandcorporatefinance.Anotherpositiveforthesectorwasthatmoremediumsizedfirmsactivelybegantoengageinthemarket.

Thismayhavebeeninresponsetolosingstafftolargerfirms/industryasthesurplusofcandidatesfrom2009haslongdisappeared.Althoughcashflowisstillamajorissueformany,smallerfirmshavestreamlinedtosuchanextentthattheyhavetoreplacestaffwhomoveonoranypickupinworknowrequiresanewhire.

Forthosefirmswishingtohirethereisalackofsuitablyqualified/skilledcandidatestosatisfythedemandsowearenowagainseeingcandidatesattainingmultipleoffers.Thishasrecentlystartedtohaveanupwardpressureonsalaries/packages.Small/mediumsizedfirmsnowoftenhavetoofferhigherbasicsalariesthanprevi-ouslytoattractcandidatesandbonuspaymentsaremakingacomebackwithlargerfirmsalbeitnotyetatthesamelevelsofafewyearsago.

Expectations for 2012:Afterayearandahalfofconsolidationandgrowthinthepracticemarket,2012issetuptobeanotheractiveperiod.Themainpressurewillagainbeforauditandconsultancystaff.Weexpectfurtherincreasesinhiresbysmall&mediumsizedfirmswithlargerfirmscontinuingtohireaggressively.UnlessthereisadampeningeffectfromthecurrentEurozonecrisis,2012willbeatoughmarketforemployerstorecruitcandidatesandtherecentupwardpressureonsalariesmayintensify.

2011 In Review:Thepastyearhasseenamarkedincreaseinthenumberoftaxpositionscreatedcomparedto2010.Althoughtaxrolesinpracticearestillnotplentifultherewereanumberofhiresmadeatataxseniorandmanagerlevelwhichisinstarkcontrasttotheyears2009/2010.Interestingly,rolesnotonlybecameavailablewithlargefirmsbutalsowithmediumsizedfirms.

RolesweremainlyinCorporateTaxbutastheyearmovedonpositionswerefurthercreatedinVATandPersonalTaxwhichisanencouragingsign.Theindustrymarketalsocontinuedtocreatenewrolesasithasdoneforthepastfewyearsandthisaddedsomefurtherbuoyancytothemarketasawhole.

Expectations for 2012:Lookingforwardto2012itislikelythatthetrendinanincreasedvolumeofroleswillcontinueaslongasthereisnotanotherbigshocktothefinancialmarket.Sala-rieswhichstabilisedin2011willlikelynotseesignificantupwardpressureuntilthesmallpoolofavailablecandidateswhichremainhasdisappeared.Transferpricingisaparticularnicheareawhichweenvisagewillcontinuetoexperienceupwardsalarypressureasitisextremelydifficulttosourcecandidateswiththisskillset.

2011 in ReviewFromanoperationalpointofview,thebankingmarketunderwentfurtherre-structuringin2011.Inmanycases,thisresultedinanincreaseinrecruitmentandgrowthincertainareas–despitetheimpressionexternallyofadecliningbankingandfinancialservicessector.

EmploymentgrowthinthedomesticBankingandfinancialservicessectorwashow-everstillverymuchsubdued,mirroring2009and2010.Therewasagreaterfocusonnewbusinesshowever,withseveralinstitutionscreatingspecific“enterprise”unitswithaviewtolongtermrecovery.

InternationalentitiesbasedorheadquarteredinDublinagaingeneratedmanyofthe“newroles”comingtothemarket.Itisinterestingtonotehoweverthatahighvolumeofnewlycreatedpositionsin2011wereofferedonafixedtermcontractbasis,perhapsareflectionofthecontinueduncertainty.

Overallwesawanincreaseinrecruitmentbetween2010and2011withcompli-ance,operationsandcollectionsbeingaleadingfocusfromarecruitmentperspec-tive.

Expectation for 2012Aswithmanysectors,itisverydifficulttopredictanoutlookfor2012.Weareconfidentthatthegradualimprovementin2011willcontinuethroughouttheyearahead.MuchofourbenchmarkedexpectationsaredependentonthehealthofthebankingandfinancesectorEuropewide.Asaresultofthisthereisadegreeofun-certaintybothregardingremunerationandprojectedemploymentfiguresfor2012. Weexpectthatinkeyareasremunerationmaybecomeagreaterissuethisyearwithemployersfocusingmoreonqualityovercost.Theknockoneffectofin-creasedrecruitmentactivityin2011andthelatterhalfof2010alsomeansthatcertaincandidateprofileshavebecomemoredifficulttosource,andasmorefinancialentitiesbegintohireagainthisyearthecompetitionfortoptalentislikelytoincrease.

Ultimatelyhowever,jobsecurityandlongtermprogressionareratedhigherbybankingprofessionalsthanbasicremunerationsoincreasesinsalariesacrosstheboardarelikelytobeinconsistentandlackinginuniformity.

2011 in Review2011showedlimitedincreasesinvacancynumbers,however,onapositivenotethestabilisationoftheHRjobmarketexperiencedinlate2010didcontinuewithanoticeablereductioninthenumberofredundanciesintheprofession.Asaresult,wesawadeclineinthenumberofcandidatesavailableinthemarkettotakeupcontract roles in comparison to the high number of HR job seekers readily available forcontractrolesin2009/2010.

WealsonoticedanimprovementinoverallmarketconfidencewhichledtotheavailabilityofmoreHRrolesonapermanentbasis,asopposedtofixedtermcontracts, and in turn some more natural movement of permanently employed HR professionalsmovingtootherpermanentrolesforcareerprogression.AsignificantHRskillindemandin2011wasCompensation&Benefits/Rewardwithanumberofseniorlevelprofessionalsinthisfieldmovingtotakeonnewroles.Thisdemandledtoaslightincreaseinsalariesforthesespecialists.Theotherspecialistskillssoughtafterwerein-houserecruitment,talentdevelopmentandorganisa-tionaldevelopment.Ontheflipside,competitionforgeneralistHRrolesatalllevelsremainsstrong.

2011 in ReviewCertainsectorsofthelegalmarketimprovedduring2011withahighernumberoffirmsactivelyrecruitingintoseveralpracticesectors.Thiscontraststothelegalmarketingeneralwhichisstillexperiencinggenerallylowersalariesforfeeearnersdespiteperformanceexpectationsstillbeinghigh.Overallin2011wewitnessedasignificantincreaseinthenumberofnewpracticepositionscreated,andunlike2010–manyofthesepositionswereatmorejuniorlevels.Despitethisthenumberofrolesbeingcreatedisstillsomewayoffthepeakofthemarket4-5years’ago.

Thein-housemarketmirrored2010inthatasteadynumberofnewroleswerecre-ated,manyofwhichwerecontractpositions.Anumberofseniorindustryappoint-mentsweremadethisyearwhichishighlightedbyanincreaseintheupperbandofremunerationforpositionslikeHeadofLegal/GeneralCounsel.

Reflectingontheyeargoneby,thingshaveimprovedfasterthanwepredictedthistimelastyear,bothintermsofthenumberofsolicitorsforwhomwefoundroles,theexperiencelevelssoughtandtheremunerationcompaniesinsomecircum-stanceswerepreparedtooffer.Inlightofthistrend–wearesettinghigherexpecta-tionsfor2012.

Expectations for 2012Thelargercorporatefirmsshowedthatthere-boundtowardstheendof2010wasnottobeshortlivedandwhilethingsremaintight,optimismisfarhigher,withagreaterpercentageoffirmsinthetop30indicatingthattheywouldmakegrowthhiresnextyear.

Anumberofourclientshaveengagedwithusthisyearwithrespecttosalarybenchmarkingqueriesandthismayindicatethatgreateremphasisisbeingplacedonrewardasfirmscompeteforlawyerswithimpressivebillingrecords.

Fromanin-houseperspective–2012shouldbeaninterestingyearasmoresolici-torscrossspecialiseintheareasofcomplianceandregulatorylaw.Weexpectthatagreaternumberofsolicitorswillmovein-houseunderthetitleofcompliancein2012thanpreviously,butthepossiblelevellingoffwehaveseeninthenumberof“duediligence/securityreview”positionsmaymeanthatnumbersdonotchangedramaticallyacrossthemarket.

ItwasnotablethatlargercompanieswererecruitingadditionalresourceswithintheirSales&Marketingteamsatalllevels.ThisowedmuchtoincreasedconfidenceacrossvariousindustrysectorswiththeexceptionbeingEngineeringandConstruc-tion.

TheSales&Marketingsectorduringthefirsthalfof2011remainedanemployers’marketbutthischangednotablyduringthefinalquarterswheretherewasarecog-nisableshortageofskilledprofessionalsonthemoveatalllevels.

Thisshortagewasapparentascompanies’recruitmentandselectionprocesseswerelargelyfocusedonselectingcandidatesthathavepriororcurrentindustryknowledgeandexperience.

Basicsalariesin2011remainedconsistentwith2010levelswithonlysomeveryminorincreasesascompaniesoptedtoprovideamorerewardingbonus,commis-sionandperformancebasedpackage.
