INFORMATION TO THE TRADE | 49

Dear Friends,

2009 is a year to celebrate as Abrams Books for Young Readers enjoys its tenth anniversary and Amulet Books celebrates its fi fth. Thank you so much for supporting our books and authors! What began with twelve titles, primarily picture books, and a single staff member (me) has grown into a diverse list of more than seventy titles annually, and twelve people at Abrams devoted exclusively to the children’s program. Today we publish a range of authors and illustrators who create award-winning and bestselling books that cover a variety of genres—always conceived, edited, and printed to Abrams’ high standards, a distinguishing hallmark of our reputation in the book world.

From founding authors such as Graeme Base and Laurent de Brunhoff to new contributors Laura Numeroff , Lauren Myracle, Michael Buckley, and Jeff Kinney, we celebrate the talents of every author and illustrator who has fostered our success over the past ten years. It has been rewarding to work with them and our talented staff throughout the years. None of our success, however, would be possible without your support. Thank you again for the past ten years—here’s to the next 100!

Best regards,

Howard W. ReevesSenior Vice President and Publisher

About Blue Dog

One particular Cajun legendary creature, the loup-garou, became the inspiration for the first Blue Dog artwork. Painting for a book of Cajun ghost stories, George Rodrigue chose a photo of his studio dog, Tiffany, who had died several years before, to use as his prototype. Rodrigue painted this first, eerie Blue Dog a scruffy, pale gray-blue with red eyes. Over time,

the dog became a friendlier image that left the swamps and cemeteries of Louisiana to seek whatever adventure the artist imagines.

THE JUNGLE GRAPEVINEBy Alex Beard

A game of telephone goes awry in the jungle in this hilarious debut picture book.

In his children’s book debut, fine artist Alex Beard brings to life an African savanna filled with humor and misunder-standings.

When Bird mixes up something Turtle says, he accidentally starts a rumor about the watering hole drying up. One misun-derstanding leads to another, with animals making their own hilarious assumptions. No one is hearing anything right, and soon the animals are in an uproar from one end of the jungle to the other. Elephant is trumpeting, Croc is snapping, and the Fla-mingos are fleeing! Beard’s story will have every child wondering if peace can ever be restored in the animal kingdom.

Alex Beard has two galleries, one in New Orleans and the other in New York City. Along with his paintings and prints, he has created a line of puzzles that was launched through national accounts in fall 2008 and spring 2009. Puzzles based on The Jungle Grapevine will be launched in conjunction with this book in fall 2009.

Alex Beard is a painter whose work has been shown in New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York, and Hong Kong, among other cities. Alex grew up among some of the world’s most interesting and influential people. Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, and their Pop World cohorts were familiar faces in the Beard household. His extensive travels through Africa inspired this book. He lives with his wife and son in New York City. Visit his Web site at www.alexbeardstudio.com.

CHASING DEGASBy Eva Montanari

A young ballerina discovers the Impressionists in Paris.

Monsieur Degas likes to paint the students while they practice in ballet class—they’ve inspired many of his beauti-ful paintings. But one day he mistakenly leaves his bag of paints in the dance studio and instead takes a young ballerina’s bag, which contains her new tutu for the eve-ning’s recital! And so the ballerina begins a great chase to find Degas before her big night.

As she searches the streets of Paris, the ballerina encounters many other Impressionist painters, who are in the pro-cess of painting some of their great works. Monet, Renoir, Caillebotte, and Cassatt help the ballerina until she is reunited, at last, with Degas.

Featuring the original Impressionist paintings that inspired this picture book of historical fiction, along with an author’s note about Impressionism and this vibrant period in Paris, Chasing Degas will delight young lovers of art and ballet.

FLAGS OF THE WORLDBy Sylvie Bednar

All the world’s flags are captured in this attractive, informative book chock-full of fun facts.

In this complete compendium of the world’s flags, each nation’s flag is paired with facts and tidbits of history. These flags provide a window into the histories, values, and cultures of countries around the world.

Waving in the wind, a flag may not seem like a code. But hidden in the stripes, stars, suns, moons, and colors of the world’s flags are the keys to understanding diff-erent countries’ shared histories and cherished ideals.

Flags do much more than identify countries and groups of people. In every color, pattern, and design, the citizens and governments of countries announce their allegiances and herald their history. If you know what to look for, a flag can reveal major insights into another country’s history and culture.

Sylvie Bednar is a designer and author who writes about her voyages through Australia, Iceland, and Mexico. Fascinated by the multi-colored beauty of flags, she has extensively researched their meanings and developed a deep admiration for their symbolic power. She lives in France.

JOHN BROWNHis Fight for Freedom

By John Hendrix

The only illustrated biography for children about the great nineteenth-century abolitionist

Published on the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, this biography explores the life of one of American history’s most controversial figures. A great deal of academic study has been published recently about John Brown. This is the first book for young readers to include these new attitudes and research.

In the late 1850s, at a time when many men and women spoke out against slavery, few had the same impact as John Brown, the infamous white abolitionist who backed his beliefs with unstoppable action. His dedication to freeing the American slaves made him one of the most recognizable leaders in the liberation movement to end slavery.

Told through engaging, thoughtful narration and bold, dynamic illustrations, John Brown: His Fight for Freedom is a fit-ting reminder that all men and women are created equal, and that some things are worth fighting for. The book includes an author’s note, a bibliography, and an index.

THE TOON TREASURY OF CLASSIC Edited by Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly Introduction by Jon Scieszka

The TOON Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics is an unprecedented collection of the greatest comics for children, artfully compiled by two of the best-known creators in publishing and the field of comics—Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly.

This treasury created for young readers focuses on comic books, not strips, and contains humorous stories that range from a single page to eight or twenty-two pages, each complete and self-contained. The comics have been culled from the Golden Age of comic books, roughly the 1940s through the early 1960s, and feature the best examples of works by such renowned artists and writers as Carl Barks, John Stanley, Sheldon Mayer, Walt Kelly, Basil Wolverton, and George Carlson, among many, many others.

Organizing the book into five categories (Hey, Kids!; Funny Animals; Fantasyland; Story Time!; and Wacky & Weird), Mouly and Spiegel-man use their expertise in the area of comics to frame each category with an introductory essay, and provide brief biographies of the artists. The TOON Treasury of Classic Children’s Comics is essential reading for kids of all ages.

LUV YA BUNCHESBook One

By Lauren Myracle

Four friends navigate the ups and downs of fifth grade.

What do Katie-Rose, Yasaman, Milla, and Violet all have in common? Other than being named after flowers, practi-cally nothing. Katie-Rose is a film director in training. Yasaman is a computer whiz. Milla is third in command of the A list. And Violet is the new girl in school. They’re fab girls, all of them, but they sure aren’t friends. And if evil queen bee Medusa—’scuse me, Modessa—has her way, they never will be. But this is the beginning of a new school year, when anything can hap-pen and social worlds can collide . . .

Told in Lauren Myracle’s inventive narrative style—here a fresh mix of instant messages, blog posts, screenplay, and straight narrative—Luv Ya Bunches, the first in a four-book series, is a funny, hon-est depiction of the shifting alliances and rivalries that shape school days, and of the lasting friendships that blossom from the skirmishes.

Lauren Myracle is a graduate of the Vermont College MFA program in writing for children and young adults. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling Internet Girls trilogy—ttyl, ttfn, and l8r, g8r—and ever since realizing how popular these books are with the tween set, she wanted to write an Internet series just for them. Lauren grew up in Atlanta and lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, with her husband and three children.

The wolves had just felt a sudden violent vibration too, as they swung round together toward the High Ice Cliff. It was as though the dark air itself was moving, and then the most horrifying noise, like a thunderous, agonized groan from some bitter god, came bursting from its huge sides, as if the whole cliff, or the whole world for that matter, were giving birth.

In astonishment the wolves padded straight toward the cliff, even farther away from Anarga’s hiding place, their own ears standing straight up like hunting dogs’, and their tails raised in futile challenge.

“The ice,” snarled the Dragga, fear gripping his angry voice. “It sounds like it’s talking. Or crying out.”

“By Atar, what’s happening to me?” moaned Anarga below the ground, as the pain suddenly shook through the polar bear’s body, and the deafening sounds outside came again, muffl ing her own growing birthing cries. Anarga’s time had come.

“Look, Treeg,” gasped one of the wolves in horror, almost lifting a paw to point. The Dragga had seen it too, and as Glawnaq’s mercenaries watched

An excerpt from

SCREAM OF THE WHITE BEARSSCREAM OF THE WHITE BEARSin incomprehension, there was another shattering groan around the whole ice-bound bay, and then a hollow boom, as half of the mighty ice wall ahead of them seemed to break from the land itself, and then to drop toward the sea.

“It’s the end of the world,” whimpered the Dragga wolf bitterly, his tail coming down in total submission. “The end of everything there is. The Great Story. The ice itself is dying.”

The noise of the dying ice mountain fi lled the arctic Sound, but Anarga Calmpaw could no longer hear it, for it had been replaced by a pounding in her head, and the polar bear’s heart was bursting with pride and love as she looked down. There in the semi-darkness, on the snowy fl oor of the glittering ice chamber, lay a tiny little newborn polar bear cub, no bigger than a tree squirrel, and so infi nitely vulnerable that a wolf might easily have lapped it up on its hungry tongue and swallowed it whole.

Anarga Calmpaw blinked in utter aston-ishment. “But it can’t be,” she whispered in the shadows. “It just can’t.”

SCREAM OF THE WHITE BEARSBy David Clement-Davies

This new epic explores one of the most beautiful and fearsome animals of them all—the polar bear.

In the ice wilds of the fabled north, the lords of the moving mountains have always been the polar bears. Kings of the wild, the white bears have ruled since the beginning of time, believing that they were hurled to earth from the heavens. There is only one creature they fear—man.

The polar bears are also haunted by a prophecy, that one day the ice will sud-denly cry out and die, causing the fish to float and the seals to flee. Then, as a result, one will be born among them—a white cub with one black paw who can hear the very beating of the polar heart. It is he who will lead his kind, and the whole world, to safety.

FELLBy David Clement-Davies

“Rousing battles, detailed wolf mythology, and lyrical descriptions . . . this tale will appeal to fans of animal fantasy epics.” —Kliatt

In this dark, thrilling fairy tale, it is the wolf who saves the girl. Fell, the dark-furred twin brother of Larka, the heroine of The Sight, must face life without his sister or the rest of his loving pack. He’s a lone wolf now, a “kerl,” an outcast from his kind who shares his sister’s fatal gift for seeing the future and the thoughts of others. This gift leads him to befriend a young girl, also an outcast from her people. They have a shared destiny: to free the land from a tyrannical ruler who would enslave man and animal alike.

The prequel to this book, David Clement-Davies’s bestselling animal fan-tasy The Sight, is set among the wolves of Transylvania. This dark epic thrilled readers and critics alike, who said, “This sprawl-ing, ambitious novel has it all: action, adventure, apocalyptic battles” (Children’s Literature), and called it “rich, complex, and credible” (VOYA) and “full bodied [and] lyri-cally told” (Booklist, starred review).

As we go farther in, a sharp wave of nausea hits me. It’s so strong, I have to stop. My forehead is clammy with sweat and I double over in pain. Adom is ahead of me and doesn’t notice anything’s wrong. I try to breathe slowly, pushing down the urge to turn around and run. I force my feet forward, continuing down the sloping corridor deep into the earth. The images on the walls on either side of me dance and grimace, mocking me. From a muffled distance, I hear shrill demonic laughter, as if I’m getting closer to hell. I shake my head, trying to clear my eyes and ears. The evil laughter fades away and the paintings on the wall freeze into place, but something feels very wrong.

I meet up with Adom and Rashid in the central burial chamber. Hapuseneb’s mummy still sits in its heavy stone sarcophagus, surrounded by statues, pottery, jewelry, chairs, a jumble of supplies for the afterlife. Rashid points out where the photographers have set up their equipment.

“Everything will be recorded before being moved to the Cairo museum,” he explains. “You have arrived at a unique moment—after the clearing away of rubble and dirt, but before the cataloging and packing away of all the material has begun. It’s a rare chance to

see a tomb much as it was when it was sealed almost three and a half millennia ago.”

Adom listens and I try to pay attention, too, but I’m distracted by the paintings on the walls. Like the ones in the corridor earlier, the figures start to pulse and move. I feel a stab of recognition—they’re the images from my dream that first night in Egypt. They shift and transform from one elusive thing into another until one section comes into crystal-clear focus. I see Hapuseneb standing by the Nile River, a crocodile on the shore across from him. The next scene shows the dead man’s heart being weighed, just like the picture in the Book of the Dead. I watch in horror as the heart sinks. It’s much heavier than the feather, black with the weight of its evil deeds. There is a piercing shriek and the hungry demon leaps at Hapuseneb, swallowing him in one awful gulp. The painting melts on the wall, dripping down to the floor like a pool of blood. I gasp, my mouth dry and chalky, my eyes riveted by the swirl of red at my feet. When I dare to look up at the wall again, the painting is back to its original form, the heart being weighed, the demon waiting, Hapuseneb standing by, secure in the purity of his soul.demon waiting, Hapuseneb standing by, secure in the purity of his soul.

TIGER MOONBy Antonia MichaelisTranslated by Anthea Bell

The highly acclaimed novel about a talking tiger, a doomed princess, and a rascally thief is “an absorbing epic . . . written in lyrical prose.”*

How does a story of India begin?Does it begin with the three great

rivers—the Ganges, the Yamuna, the unseen Sarasvati pouring her dreaming waters down from the snowy mountains to the hot, dry plain?

This bewitching story within a story,

set in magical India, explores the power of narrative to change the course of lives. Raka, the doomed young bride of a violent merchant, weaves a tale of rescue so vivid, it might just come true. She tells a servant boy the story of Farhad, a thief and unlikely hero, who must retrieve a famous jewel in order to save a kidnapped princess from a demon king. Farhad’s unforgettable companion on the journey is a wisecrack-ing white tiger with an unnatural fear of water. It is their unusual and funny friendship, and the final sacrifice that they must make, that is the heart of this grand, beautiful novel about summoning the hero within.

Told in a voice that’s honest, urgent, and hilarious, Struts & Frets will resonate not only with teenage musicians but with anyone who ever sat up all night listening to a favorite album, wondering if they’d ever find their place in the world.

Music is in Sammy’s blood. His grand-father was a jazz musician, and Sammy’s indie rock band could be huge one day—if they don’t self-destruct first. Winning the upcoming Battle of the Bands would justify all the band’s compromises and reassure Sammy that his life’s dream could become a reality. But practices are hard to schedule when Sammy’s grandfather is sick and getting worse, his mother is too busy to help either of them, and his best friend may want to be his girlfriend.

When everything in Sammy’s life seems to be headed for major catastrophe, will his music be enough to keep him together?

TROY HIGHBy Shana Norris

A riveting, contemporary retelling of the famous Troy myth, set in two rival high schools

Homer’s Iliad, the classic tale of love and revenge, is shrewdly retold for teens in Troy High.

Narrated by Cassie, a shy outsider who fears that an epic high school rivalry is about to go up in flames, the story follows the Trojans and Spartans as they declare war on the football field. After the beauti-ful Elena—who used to be the captain of the Spartan cheerleaders—transfers to Troy High and falls madly in love with Cassie’s brother Perry, the Spartans vow that the annual homecoming game will never be forgotten.

The Trojans and Spartans pull wicked pranks on each other as homecoming approaches. And the Spartans’ wildcard football star, Ackley, promises to take down the Trojans’ offensive line. But the stakes are raised when Cassie is forced to choose between the boy she loves (a Spar-tan) and loyalty to her family and school. Troy High will seduce readers with its incendiary cast of mythic proportions.

Combining manga and the timeless texts of Shakespeare’s plays, this series translates some of the greatest works of literature into a new format. In King Lear, the aging king—here a Native American—must decide how to split his kingdom among his daughters. When he scorns his one dutiful daughter and trusts the two selfish ones, he pays a steep price. In Much Ado About Nothing, Beatrice and Benedick trade insults and fall in love in the sunny Italian court of the Duke—but the Duke’s brother has devious plans to ruin the happy mood. Manga read-ers can now enjoy the wit and drama of these plays firsthand.
