He was called up from the active reserves to serve again duringthe Korean Conflict, from September of 1950 to August of 1951, aboard a destroyer tender, theUSS Bryce Canyon AD 36, serving mostly in Japan and Korean waters.He is a charter memberof the American Legion, Caledonia Memorial Post 305. Jay was employed for 34 years as aUAW Journeyman Electronic Technician at the former Lear Seigler Corporation in GrandRapids. With the exception of military service time, Jay has been a life long resident ofCaledonia, serving as an Assessor, Trustee and Treasurer for the village over a period oftwenty one years. Jay also served on the library board for a number of years, and was a BoyScout and later a Scout leader with Troop 202 for a number of years. After retiring from Lear in1986, he was still the Treasurer of the village and also took a part time driving job withNational Car Rental for about five years, and afterward drove f or West Michigan Auto Auctionfor another year. When a young man hejoined the Mennonite Church and was faithful to the end. In 1882 he married Elizabeth Leinbach. Thisunion was blessed with 5 children. One son preceded him to death in 1911. On Dec. 7, 1915, she was married toMartin Ramer, who preceded her in death on July 20, 1929. Surviving are 4 sons (Jonas, Leonard,Sidney, and Elvin), 2 daughters (Elsie - Mrs. Emerson McDowell, and Grace), 20 grandchildren, and2 sisters (Sevilla Dettwiler and Laura - Mrs. Eden Cressman). She was preceded in death by 5brothers (Enos, Reuben, Henry, Menno, and Norman). She was a member of Wideman MennoniteChurch, where funeral services were held on May 17, in charge of Paul Martin and Eric Strachan;interment in adjoining cemetery.



Annie married Martin Ramer on Dec 7, 1915, son of Daniel H. B. Ramer and ElizabethNighswander. Martin was born on Nov 26, 1889 near Markham, Ontario, died on Jul 20, 1929 inToronto General Hospital, Toronto, Ontario aged 39, and was buried in Wideman MennoniteCemetery, Markham, York Co., Ontario. The cause of his death was Unsuccessful operation forappendicitis. They had six children: Jonas D., Leonard D., Sidney, Elsie Mae, Elvin and GraceAlice.

Ramer.-Martin, son of Daniel and Elisabeth Ramer, was born near Markham, Ont., Nov. 26, 1889;died in the Toronto General Hospital July 20, 1929; aged 39 y. 7 m. 24 d. He suffered only a fewdays from appendicitis and did not survive the surgical operation. He yielded himself to the Lordand was received into the Church at the age of seventeen. In 1915 he was married to Annie,daughter of A. K. Dettwiler, of St. Jacobs, Ont., who, with six children (Jonas, Leonard, Sydney,Elsie, Elvin, and Grace) survives. As a Christian man and a neighbor Bro. Ramer was highlyrespected. There was seldom a need in the community that did not receive his hearty support. Heleft a clear testimony for the Lord and said that all was well. He was buried in the Widemancemetery on the 23rd. The funeral was very largely attended. The services were conducted by thehome ministers, Levi Grove and Thomas Reeser, and Benjamin Good of Ohio. Text, Jno. 14:

Obituary, THE RECORD - Jul. 26, 2007MRS. ERMA DETTWILER (nee Cressman) 1930 - 2007 Erma departed this earth, atPinehaven Nursing home, on Wednesday, July 25, 2007. Erma was the daughter of thelate Daniel W. and Magdalena Cressman. In her early teens, it was her desire tobecome a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized into Christian Fellowshipand remained faithful throughout her life. In 1953, Erma and Mahlon Dettwiler wereunited in marriage. Her life lives on, as she was a loving and devoted mother to Wesley(Janet) Dettwiler, Charlene Hudson, Debra (Arthur) Dettweiler and Andrea (Dennis)Freund. A dear grandmother to Benjamin and Deeanna Dettwiler, Kyle Hudson,Christopher and Brent Dettweiler and Autumn, Hannah and Carter Freund. Ermasuffered many years with the crippling diseases of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's andOsteoporosis. She fought them valiantly. In December 2005, she moved to PinehavenNursing Home which became her new home. She was welcomed by all. Herresponsibilities included putting things in their proper place and tiding up, which she didas long as she was able to walk. She never complained or asked about home. As afamily, we sincerely thank Dr. Pope, the nurses, the staff and caregivers for the love andcare they provided Erma. For this we are truly thankful and wish you God's abundant

blessing. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Homein Elmira on Thursday, July 26 (today) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, July 27 from 2-4 p.m.only. At 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, transfer will be made to Elmira Mennonite Churchfor funeral service at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Fred Redekop officiating. Interment will follow atSt. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. He will be rememberedwith love and gratitude by his wife, Fern (nee Dettwiler); daughter, Martha Drouillard (Dave);sons, Glen (Patricia) and Roger (Carolyn) and daughter-in-law, Marjorie Horst (Elwood); twelvegrandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, and thirty-two additional grandchildren andgreat-grandchildren that he embraced in his affections and prayers. He is also mourned by hissister, Lydia Ann Bauman (Howard); brother, Simeon (Jean); sisters-in-law, Leeta Horst(Melvin) and Gladys Olley (Victor), and many nephews and nieces. From 1970-79 he was employed part time at Dellcrest Children's Centreand in 1977 completed a Social Service course through Seneca College. Elsie was bo rn into a "farming" familytwo miles east of Wakarusa. As a child she w as very interested in homemaking, particularly breadbaking. Consequent ly household duties were a privilege rather than jobs to be avoided. At t heapproximate age of 13 she did all of her own sewing, plus completi ng a "nine patch" quilt. She alsoenjoyed selling Larkin Products for t he premiums that she could earn. Good dishes with manymemories attach ed to them continue to be stored in an oak china closet she earned throu ghselling. . .Elsie's job as a young lady was helping families with new b abies. She would bescheduled in advance for the approximate date when t he baby would arrive. In the fall of 1916,Elsie was scheduled to help t he Jake Goetz family of Ohio. Mrs. Jake (Jessie) Goetz was her firstcous in and a busy farmer's wife. During her time there, Jake's brother, Wil l, came each Sunday tovisit. The first time he arrived no one thoug ht it unusual, but the third consecutive Sunday visit, theGoetz's decid ed it was Elsie he was interested in, rather than his brother ! Elsie h ad been ignoringhim all along as she thought he was engaged to another la dy. Eventually Will asked her for a dateand during the three months Els ie spent in Ohio, they learned to know each other quite well andenjoyed b eing together. After returning home, Elsie and Will corresponded regular ly by mail. AtChristmas, of the same year, Will came by train to meet Els ie's family. Elsie was at the depot withhorse and buggy happily awaiti ng Will's arrival. January 7, 1919, they were married and beganfarming f or local farmers. In 1930, they purchased a farm on C.R. 40, eight miles e ast ofWakarusa. Elsie lived there until after Will's death on Octob er 7, 1970. . Elsie has three children, allof our congregation -- Virgi l, Thelma (Mrs. Walter Mishler), and Phyllis (Mrs. Stanley Kehr) ; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. . She has many hobbies -- grow ing varieties of plants,crocheting, embroidering, textile painting and ph otography. Elsie has many picture albums full ofpeople and places. One al bum contains pictures of every person who has lived in Manor I sincethe t ime she has been living at Greencroft. The pictures are well focused, wi th interestingbackgrounds. . Early in his life he made thedecision on which the rest of his life hinged; he declared himself a believer in Jesus Christand followed the Lord faithfully following his baptism. He was an active and faithful member ofthe Yellow Creek Mennonite Church, a member of the Yokefellows Sunday School Class, andone who gave strong leadership to the work of Mennonite Disaster Service and MennoniteCentral Committee. He also served as a Church Trustee and Church Council member.He wasa man of clear conviction, abounding love for his family, and a joyful discipleship.Characteristic of his life was his regular attendance at the services of the Church.
