Many people believe that Abraham Lincoln was the United States greatest president.

Abe was born and raised in a log cabin.He and his family lived in Kentucky .

Abe was born in Kentucky on February 12, 1809. His family was poor, but he loved to learn.He walked many miles to school every day.

This is the home of Lincoln. He lived in this cabin in Indiana for 13 years. His mother died here .

Abe had to read by the fire because there was no electricity, and the family was too poor to use many candles. He studied late into the night.

Abe becomesa lawyer.People loved Lincoln. They called him Honest Abe. He didnt go to college but became a lawyer.One day he visited the South. He saw people buying slaves. He said, It is wrong for people to have slaves. Some day all people shall be free. He wanted to become president of the United States.

Lincoln married a young woman named Mary Todd. They had a family, and in 1860, he became president of the United States.

People in the North said that Lincoln was right and that slaves should be free.

But 7 states in the South did not agree. They wanted slaves for their farms.

Soon there was a Civil War.

Lincoln reads to his son in the White House with his wife Mary and his eldest son.

Lincoln said the states must stay united, but theSouth disagreed. So there was a Civil War. It was a terrible war.

The North won the war. Lincoln wanted to help the South rebuild.

President Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation. Now the slaves are free.

At last, in 1865, the Civil War ended. The South lost and came back into the union. The slaves were free. Lincoln had saved the country.

Black people were very happy to be emancipated. The people of the North were happy too. Lincoln planned ways to help the South after the war. He wanted the whole country to work together again.

But the people in the South were not happy. Many of them hated Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth was from the South. He was a famous actor. He planned to assassinate Lincoln. THE CIVIL WAR IS OVEROn April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to the theater. John Wilkes Booth shot and killed President Lincoln in the Ford Theater.

People cried for many many days after Lincoln died.

He was truly the greatest leader they had known.
