In 1995, Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University. They started working on a new search engine. They also formed a network of a lot of cheap pc’s. This network responded to searches faster than fewer and more expensive servers.

The size of the databaseGoogle grew fast and is for the time being the most used search engine on the Internet. Google no longer give information on the number of pages in their databases. Google works like this

PageRankGoogle shows the pages in a row according to how often the pages have been linked to. This happens in a process called Page Rank-technology.

Google consists of three parts:

1. A Robotthat searches the Web and puts the websites it finds into Google’s database.

2. An Indexcovering every word, image, film etc. in the database.

3. A Search Enginethat sends search terms to the index and obtains and sorts the pages according to certain rules.

There are many advantages in using advanced search.

You can define exactly:

how your search terms are to be used,

where the search terms are going to be shown on the page

if the search is going to be conducted in a certain language

and much more.

Search terms


All terms:The field contains ALL the search terms you type in. Google searches all the terms anywhere in the webpage.

Exact phrase:Google searches your terms exactly as you wrote them.

With at least one of the words Is a both/and field. If you write cars or bikes Google finds pages, dealing with cars or bikes or both cars and bikes.

Without the words Is a field for words you do not want in the search result. If you are looking for recipes without sugar, you write the term sugar in the ’without’ field.

In the field ’Occurrences’ you can decide where on the page your terms should appear.

Click the Drop Down Arrow and choose where your search term should occur.

In the title of the page..is one of the better options.

If you choose ’In the title of the page’ it is almost certain that you get the pages dealing with the subject you are looking for.

How many ?

How ?Google finds images on the web by recognising image files.

Google finds the search terms for the images in the text closest to the image.

Where ?You access Google’s image search by clicking ”Images” on the front page.

Your search result is shown as miniature images. If you want to take a closer look at an image, click the miniature image and follow the directions on the screen.

File typeClicking this drop down arrow you can choose between different file types. All types or for instance just JPG or GIF.

ColorationIn this field you can choose whether the search should be for colour images or black and white.

DomainYou can choose which domain to search for the images.
