About This Service

Today’s worship service is based upon the Service of Word and Sacrament included in the

Supplement to the Moravian Book of Worship Manual for Worship Planners. This service emphasizes the

unity of Word and Sacrament, as a single, unified liturgy consisting of basic elements of worship.

Because this liturgy grows out of a common Christian heritage, it has much in common with

liturgies of other churches, past and present. The prayers in this service were largely drawn from the

“Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom” of the Orthodox Church, translated by C. Daniel Crews.

Several of the hymns merit special mention. Rejoice, O Czechs, and Every Land (page 4) is newly-

written by C. Daniel Crews, based on the concepts found in an extremely long hymn which was

printed in the 1615 Czech hymnal of the Unitas Fratrum and used for the commemoration of the

martyrdom of John Hus. The tune dates to the 7th century and may have been used by the early

Unitas Fratrum. O Living Bread, of Christ Our Head (page 12) was written by John Hus, translated by

C. Daniel Crews, and set to a tune by Michael Weisse, editor of the 1531 German hymnal of the

Unitas Fratrum. Lord Jesus Christ, Our Priest Most Kind was also written by Hus and translated by

Daniel Crews, set to its tune in the 1615 hymnal.

The choral introit is translated by C. Daniel Crews from the 1615 hymnal, where it was

designated for use in commemoration of Hus’ martyrdom, and set to the same chant tune. I Am

Jesus’ Little Lamb, sung by the children, is a translation of the same German original which is more

widely known in its translation as Jesus Makes My Heart Rejoice. Youth musicians will present music

prepared for this service at Senior High Camp last week. The vocal quartet was written by Stuart

Townend and is sung by Ashley Brady, Roman Brady, Kathleen Sawtelle, Michael Sawtelle

The offertory anthem, Lord Christ Jesus, Our Salvation, has its text by John Hus and translated by

Dirk French; the tune originated in Hohenfurth (1410) and is arranged by Dirk French. Wounded

Lamb! By Your Self-Offering is an anonymous Moravian hymn text set to the music better known as

Ave Verum Corpus by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; this music and the German text are found

together in Moravian manuscripts used in early America. Texts for the choral music in this service

are printed on page 16.

The monetary offering received today is designated for the Multicultural Fund administered by

the Moravian Board of Cooperative Ministries, and will be used to support translation of Moravian

resources into languages needed throughout the worldwide Moravian Church.

The Moravian Church practices open communion, and all who normally partake of Communion

in their home congregation are invited to partake.

We will receive Communion by intinction, as the hymns are being sung. We will process down

the center aisle and return to our seats via the side aisles. When you receive the bread, dip it in the

juice and then partake. All of the bread used for the Holy Communion is gluten-free.

You are cordially invited to a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the service.

Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, our Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer; And blessed be God's reign in all the universe! Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

As we come together before God, the perfect and compassionate One, let us confess our sins in full assurance of faith and humbly ask for mercy. Let us pray.

(Silent Confession)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Hear what the Lord our Redeemer says: I will have mercy on you with a mercy that has no end, and I will not remember your sins. There is, therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, Redeemer and Sustainer, we offer you thanks and praise for the holy lives of all your servants — the prophets, apostles, and martyrs — who have shone forth as lights in the world and sacrificed their lives in testimony of their faith.

We thank you for calling your servant John Hus to be an instrument of reformation and renewal in your church, and for keeping him faithful even unto a martyr’s death.

NICENE CREED The Rev. Zachary Dease

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

In peace let us pray to the Lord:

For the peace which comes from above, and for the salvation of our souls, For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being of the holy church of God, For this house of worship, and for all who with faith and reverence come into it, For our bishops and other ministers and teachers, that they may rightly teach the word of truth,

For the whole Christian church, and for all who serve within it for the work of reconciliation, let us pray to the Lord:

Lord, hear our prayer.

For our native land, and for all nations and peoples, For all governments on earth, that they may strive for righteousness and peace, and conduct themselves for the glory of God, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, hear our prayer. For this community, for the whole land, and for all who live in it, For the careful stewardship of our natural resources, for the fruitfulness of the earth, and for peaceful times, For those who travel, For the poor, the homeless, the deprived, and the imprisoned, For the afflicted, the persecuted, and those who face great temptation, danger, violence, or need, For the sick and the dying, and for the salvation of all, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, hear our prayer. Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his name you will be in the midst of them. Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Rev. Nola Reed Knouse

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is truly right and good to sing to you, to bless you and to praise you, to thank you and to worship you throughout all the universe, for you are God, eternal and glorious, beyond the highest powers of our comprehension, with your only-begotten Son and your Holy Spirit. Through your Word you brought us forth from nothingness into being, and raised us when we had fallen into sin, leaving nothing undone to bring us to your heavenly kingdom which is to come. For all your love and saving work, for all your goodness and benefits to us, known and unknown, seen and unseen, we thank you, humbly rejoicing that you graciously accept this service from our hands, though you are surrounded by countless thousands of angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, who soar aloft on wings of light singing to you their triumphal song:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Together with all the heavenly hosts we join our voices to proclaim your glorious majesty, O Lover of humanity, for you loved the world so much that you sent your only-begotten Son so that all who believe in him might not perish, but have eternal life. When he had come and lived among us to fulfill all that was needed for our redemption, he freely gave himself up for the life of the world. Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper our Lord Jesus Christ took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Remembering Christ's command, the cross and tomb, the resurrection on the third day, the ascension into heaven and the sitting at the right hand of the throne of God, and looking in hope to Christ's coming again in glory, with this bread and cup we offer to you ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with the one perfect sacrifice of Christ, in all and for all. We pray you to send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine to make them for us the sacrament of Christ's precious body and blood, that we who receive them, in company with your faithful people in every age and place, may be strengthened to witness and work for your justice, truth, and peace, in the power of your life eternal.

We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, that with one voice and one heart we may glorify your wondrous name, God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -- now and forever, and to all ages of ages. Amen.

And now, as our Savior has taught us, we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD (The minister breaks the bread and says:)

As there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. The cup over which we give thanks is a sharing in the blood of Christ. The gifts of God for the people of God: Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

SHARING THE BREAD AND CUP

(The elements are distributed to the people as the following hymns are sung.

The following words may be exchanged.)

The body of Christ, given for you. Amen. The blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen.

Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

SENDING FORTH

Let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Chalices The wooden chalice used in today’s service was given to Moravian Theological Seminary in honor of Bishop Adolf Ulrich. It was turned from a pine tree, known as the “Brotherly Pine”,

planted over 300 years ago in rural Bohemia to honor the first clergy of the Unitas Fratrum who were elected in 1467. The crystal chalice was given to the American Provinces of the Unity by

the Czech Province in celebration of the Unity’s 500th anniversary in 1957.

The Choral Music Introit Translated by C. Daniel Crews, arranged by Nola Reed Knouse, from the 1615 hymnal of the Unitas Fratrum, designated in that hymnal for the commemoration of the martyrdom of John Hus.

Lord, who in past ages in your saints showed your power in holy lives, when the Holy Spirit your truth so demonstrated and their victory was celebrated; now their names are all venerated; from death to live are they translated, hallelujah. Praise to the Lord, the Lord most righteous; God is praised in open hearts of all his faithful witnesses. Thanks to our God, whose truth prevails still. He gives victory to us against all those who wish us ill. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

Children’s Choir: I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb Tune from Herrnhut (c. 1740); C. Gregor Choralbuch (1784) Text by Henriette Louise von Hayn (1776); translator anonymous

I am Jesus’ little lamb; ever glad at heart I am; for my Shepherd gently guides me, knows my need and well provides me, loves me every day the same, even calls me by my name.

Day by day, at home, away, Jesus is my staff and stay. When I hunger, Jesus feeds me, into pleasant pastures leads me; when I thirst, he bids me go where the quiet waters flow.

Who is happy as I am, even now the Shepherd’s lamb? And when my short life is ended, by his angel host attended, he shall fold me to his breast, there within his arms to rest.

Jesus makes my heart rejoice; I’m his sheep and know his voice. He’s a shepherd, kind and gracious, and his pastures are delicious. Constant love to me he shows; yea, my very name he knows.

Trusting his mild staff always, I go in and out in peace; he will feed me with the treasure of his grace in richest measure; when athirst, to him I cry; living water he’ll supply.

Should not I for gladness leap, led by Jesus as his sheep? For when these blest days are over, to the arms of my dear Savior I shall be conveyed to rest; amen, yea, my lot is blest.

Youth Anthem Words by Senior High Camp participants; music by Rick Sides and Jim Newsom, Jr. How Deep the Father’s Love How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that left Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom

Offertory Tune from Hohenfurth (1410), setting by Dirk French (1993) Text by John Hus (c. 1410); translated by Dirk French (1993)

Lord Christ Jesus, our salvation, every sinner’s vindication, gave us bread in his remembrance as a sacrifice in semblance.

O what wonders you have rendered who, O Christ, yourself have tendered through your symbols of redeeming, wine and bread in likeness seeming.

Bread and wine convey your presence as a mystery in essence. Yours be praise and adoration unto every generation. Amen.

Anthem: Wounded Lamb! By Your Self-Offering Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) Text by anonymous Moravian (1778), translated by C. Daniel Crews and Nola Reed Knouse

Wounded Lamb! By your self-offering unto death, by foes reviled, you, through martyr’s death and suffering us with God have reconciled. Ever, till our dying hour, may your holy death’s sharp pain and your suffering’s matchless power, our blessing, strength, and comfort gain.

Holy body for us given! Holy blood for us outpoured! Feed us for eternal living till we rest in our dear Lord. Strengthen brothers’, sisters’ yearning, seal us as your faithful band. Spirit, come, with love’s fire burning, lead us, blessed, hand in hand.

John Hus and the Moravian Church

July 6 is a special day of remembrance in the Moravian Church. On this date in 1415, a Catholic church council in the city of Constance executed one of the great Christian reformers. Millions of Christians worldwide, including Moravians, view John Hus as a martyr to the gospel and a saint, even though he was officially condemned as a heretic. For many people in Bohemia, Moravia, and elsewhere in Europe, the execution of Hus proved beyond doubt that radical reform was needed for the medieval Catholic Church, which had grown corrupt in doctrine and practice. A century after Hus’s death, Martin Luther could boldly proclaim that he, too, was a Hussite.

Contrary to popular belief, Hus was not the founder of the Moravian Church; however, his witness and courageous commitment to reform inspired Gregory the Patriarch to establish a new church forty years after Hus’s death. If Gregory was the father of the Moravian Church, then Hus was like a grandfather of the church. Hus tried to reform the Catholic Church of his day through his preaching, teaching, and writing. He challenged the corruption of the church and called for priests and pastors to live as spiritual role models for their flocks. He aggressively rejected the sale of indulgences and opposed other ways in which the institutional church sold spiritual goods. Most of all, he urged the church to use the Holy Scriptures as the ultimate guide and authority for doctrine and practice. He untiringly preached that mere belief in doctrine is not sufficient for salvation. Faith must be completed in love, by which he meant love for one’s neighbor. When his preaching frightened those who held power in his day, he was arrested, tried, and convicted. He committed his soul to Christ and bravely faced the executioners flames, trusting that his soul would return to the Lord he loved. Hus believed truth would prevail even if he were killed.

The Moravian Church was founded decades after the death of Hus as a new Christian community dedicated to his principles. The Moravian Brethren dedicated their lives to Christ and tried to live according to the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. They turned away from the allure of wealth and power and embraced lives of Christian discipleship and self-discipline. Through the centuries, Moravians have preached Hus’s message that faith must be completed in love and they have established congregations dedicated to the simple proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ and

God’s unlimited love for all people. The courageous witness of John Hus, who gave his life so that the truth would prevail, has inspired Moravians for hundreds of years. Six hundred years after his death, Moravians proclaim Hus as a martyr to the truth, a faithful witness of the gospel, and a shining example that truth cannot be destroyed by violence.
