The years leading up to 1993 saw many expansion projects that fashioned the luxury hotel into what it is today. Le Chateau Frontenac owes its name to a flamboyant French governor, Louis de Buade, count of Frontenac, who guided the destiny of New France from 1672 to 1698. Based upon the architectural styles of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the original portion of the hotel was designed by Bruce Price (father of etiquette maven Emily Post), who also designed Montreal’s Windsor Station. Over the years, countless personalities have visited the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. Among its guest have been: King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Grace of Monaco, Chiang-Kai-Shek, Charles de Gaulle, Ronald Reagan, Francois Mitterrand, Prince Andrew and Lady Sarah Ferguson, Charles Lindberg, Alfred Hitchcock and Montgomery Clift. Now, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has jumped into the ring, requiring “emergency standby” generators (those not requiring an EPA permit) to comply with EPA emissions rules. This new requirement applies regardless of whether your state or local air pollution or environmental agency has exempted your equipment (or your entire facility) from state or local emissions requirements. The new rules went into effect on April 1, 2013.

A preliminary review suggests that “emergency standby” generators are exempt from much of the tougher new regulations, but are limited in the amount of time that they can operate each year. They also must still comply with additional maintenance and record-keeping requirements.

The EPA’s reduced regulatory scheme may cover many central station backup generators, but it will be important to identify which generators qualify as “emergency standby,” how long they can operate before they trigger

the new emission restrictions, and what maintenance and record-keeping requirements will now apply. CSAA will keep you updated as news develops.

CSAA News, from page 8 wHAT My MEMbErSHIP IN CSAA MEANS TO MEBy Ivan SpectorMy company has been a member of CSAA since 1993.

Not only are the education programs of the highest caliber, but of even greater importance is what I have learned by listening and talking with the best and most knowledgeable people in the security industry. Often, the networking is done in a casual environment. I can recall discussing issues we were having with a manufacturer that was taken care of in two weeks, when it was virtually impossible to get anywhere the previous six months. Opportunities exist in CSAA for all levels of management. CSAA offers a wide range of education across the whole range of employees in your company, from its acclaimed online training programs to installation management and station management. There is simply nothing that can compare to being a member of CSAA!

CSAA Treasurer Ivan Spector is president of Alarme Sentinelle/Sentinel Alarm in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
