October5,2016ThankyouforyourinterestintheBlackMetropolisResearchConsortium2017SummerShort-termFellowshipProgram.ThisdocumentcontainsinformationabouttheFellowship;eligibilityrequirements;applicationproceduresandmaterialsspecifictoscholarsandartists;deadlinesandcontactinformation;Fellows’responsibilities;andfacilitiesandservices.AbouttheFellowshipThroughaninternationalcompetition,theBMRCoffers1-monthresidentialfellowshipsintheCityofChicagoforitsSummerShort-termFellowshipProgram.GenerouslyfundedbytheAndrewW.MellonFoundationsince2009,theSummerShort-termFellowshipProgramhasengagedscholars,artists,writers,andpublichistoriansfromtheUnitedStatesandEuropetobetterformulatenewhistoricalnarrativesofChicago’spast.Thenew,originalresearchandartdevelopedthroughthisprogramissignificantasitilluminatesthenationalandinternationalimportanceofChicago’sAfricanAmericancommunity.ThepurposeoftheSummerShort-termResearchFellowshipis:�TocreateresearchopportunitiesforscholarsandartiststoconductprimaryresearchinChicago-basedarchivalrepositories;�TogeneratenewknowledgeinthefieldofAfricanAmericanhistory;�ToengagethelocalChicagocommunityinthehistoryoftheirhistory.WiththelatestroundofMellonFoundationfunding,theBMRChasintroducedanewcohortmodelinwhichscholars,researchers,andartistswillbeselectedbasedontheirworkinbroad,yetdefined,subjectareas.Thissubject-areacohortmodelhasenabledBMRCstafftoconcentrateitssupportefforts,alongwithitsmemberinstitutions,infocusedsubjectareas.ThisalsoenablesFellowstoshareandexchangeideasandfacilitatecollaborationwithothercohortmembers.ThisapproachisfosteringlastingtiesandrelationshipsbetweenFellowsthatextendbeyondthelengthofthesummerprogramitself.AsonepreviousFellowcommentedforanevaluation,“OftenIfeelisolatedatmyuniversityintheworkIdoandthis[short-termfellowship]mademefeelapartofamuchlargerandvitalendeavorofhistoricalrecovery.”

Thesubjectareasforthe2017SummerShort-termFellowshipProgramare:GospelMusic
August2017willmarkthe85thanniversaryofThomasA.Dorsey’s(FatherofGospelMusic)gospelmusicstandard,“TakeMyHand,PreciousLord,”whichwascomposedhereinChicago.TheBMRCwillinvitescholars,musicologists,andmusicianstosubmitproposalstoresearchtheunder-investigatedmusicalgenreofChicagogospelmusicanditsimpactonAmericanpopularmusic,Jazz,and/orothermusicalgenres.
Design,UrbanDesignandArchitectureIn1937,LaszloMoholy-Nagy,aHungarianphotographeraswellasprofessorintheBauhausschool,wasrecruitedfromEuropetofoundtheNewBauhausinChicago,whichwouldlaterbecometheSchoolofDesignandthentheInstituteofDesign.WewillinviteresearcherstoinvestigatethelivesandcareersofAfricanAmericandesignersworkinginChicagoand/orhowmoderndesignapproaches,througharchitectureandurbandesign,affectedAfricanAmericancommunitiesintheCityofChicago.
EachFellowshipconsistsofone-monthofsupportduringthesummerfellowshipperiod.TheBMRCprovidesastipendof$4000foreachFellowtobeutilizedduringthesummerintheyearinwhichitwasawarded.TheBMRCawardsapproximately12-15fellowshipseachyear.Fellowshipsmaynotbedeferred.Eligibility

3. Capacity–Thecapacitytosuccessfullycompletetheresearch,asevidencedbyplanningskills,andpotentialtomanageandcarryouttheproposedproject;
4. Impact–DemonstratedneedforaccesstotheBMRCmemberinstitution’srepositories.
Applicationswillbereviewedbeginningimmediatelyafterthedeadline.Areviewpanelcomprisedofabroadspectrumofexternalresearchersandscholarswithineachsubjectareawilljuryallapplicationssubmitted.Thereviewpanelwillselectapoolofsemi-finalistsdeemedeligibleforinterviews.Interviewswillbeconductedbeforemakingafinalselection.AllcandidateswillbenotifiedofthestatusoftheirapplicationbyMonday,April3,2017.FundsareavailableforFellowstostarttheirone-monthresearchperiodanytimebetweenMay1andJune1,2017.Theapplicationandselectionprocessisconfidential.Fellows’ResponsibilitiesTheworkproducedbytheFellowsisviewedasagifttothepeopleofChicago.Therefore,theBMRC’sexpectationsforFellowsareto:

2. Participateinopeningandmid-summerevents.TheseeventsprovidenumerousopportunitiesfortheFellowstomeeteachother,theBMRCmemberarchiviststheywillbeworkingcloselywith,andotherBMRCstakeholders.
3. Presentafinalpublicpresentationoftheirresearchactivitiesatthecloseofthesummerprogram;

4. ProvidetheBMRCwithan“endoffellowship”reportandparticipateinashortsurveyforfeedback.
Althoughnot“required,”westronglyencourageformerFellowstomaintaincontactwiththeBMRCandparticipateintheFellows’AlumniGroup.ThisforumprovidesopportunitiesforFellowstoupdatetheircolleaguesandtheBMRContheircontinuingworkandscholarshipinthefieldofAfricanAmericanhistory,actasjurorsforfutureapplicants,and/oractasmentorsforcurrentFellows.FacilitiesandServicesFellowswillhaveaccesstoafurnishedofficeintheBMRCsuiteduringregularbusinesshours.TheBMRCislocatedonthecampusoftheUniversityofChicago.TheUniversityofChicagoprovidesFellowswithaccessprivilegesattheUniversityLibraryincludingdigitalresources,book,andjournalcollections.AlthoughfellowsareresponsibleforlocatingtheirownhousinginChicago,theBMRCstaffcanassist,ifnecessary,withlocatingon-campushousingattheUniversityofChicago.
