A cell is the basic functional structure of

    the human body

Tissue is formed by more cells

Organs are formed by more tissues

Sistems are formed by more organs

A body is formed by many systems.

A mature cell has specific functions depending on

    the organ where it belongs.

A mature cell has a limited number of replications.

    What is a Stem Cell?

Is capable of reproducing itselfmany times: Produce a cell thathas identical properties as the

    original.

Is capable of differentiation intoanother kind of cell. (transformationto another type of tissue).

    Homing capability.

A special type of cell, referred to as a master cell.

How does the body naturally heal?

When in balance, there is a life cycle. Stem cell is born, travels to the tissue to be worked on, differentiates

into that type of tissue (becomes tissue cell), when a cell of that tissue

dies and is discarded, the new cell replaces it.We have continuous production of stem cells.

Out of balance, accelerated damaged cells.

Could be many reasons. Body does not release enough stem cells to repair damage. Chronic disease.

    Embryonic

They are located inside the blastocyte or embryos up to 8 weeks offertilization.

    Adult stem cells.

They are located all over a formed body with higher concentration on:

    Cord blood and placenta

    Fat Bone Marrow

Types of stem cells by source

  • 7/27/2019 About Stem Cells Use and Trends

    8/29

    Totipotent

Could grow and form a complete new organism

    Pluripotent

Could form any other kind of cell Multipotent

Could diferentiate only on a cell of its line.

    Unipotent

Only can form one type of cell

    Types of stem cells

    by potential

    Why embryonic stem cells are

    controversial?

Pros: They are Highly prolific- Very easy to duplicate

They are Pluripotent - Can be differentiated into all kind oftissue

Cons: Has to come from a blastocyte - Embryo

They are Pluripotent- could differentiate into unwanted kind

of tissue on unwanted locations. They are Highly prolific- risk of growing theratomas

Gene information is also transferred to recipient.

    Adult stem cells

Pros: They are Highly prolific- but not unlimited

    They are Pluripotent or multipotent

    Primitive undifferentiated cells Easier access

    Cons:

Limited on proliferation Limited in quantity on some areas

    What is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem cell therapy = use of stem cells to treat medical conditions.

    Difference between Infusion and Transplant

Infusion:adding to your body. Reinforces your currenttissues and systems (immunologic, neurologic andmetabolic)

Transplant: replacing an organ. Usually involves anorgan transportation and storage, and an aggressivepatient preparation.

Autologous- own tissue. Same donor and recipient.

Homologous / Allogenic- Tissues from the samespecies

    HeterologousTissue from other species

    Types of Transplant

Risks and secondary effects of Stem

    cell therapy infusion

    Autologous Risk: Infection

Secondary effects: head ache, bruise skin.

    Allogenic

    Genetic Disease transmission

Low viability if not stored/processed properly

    Tissue rejection

Secondary Effects: same as above and variable with thecomplications.

CAUTION: the more different the tissue is, the more

aggressive the risks are. (example: animal stem cells)

    Myths of stem cells

In the near future Stem cells will cure all and everyone! Stem cells cause theratomas.

Stem cells from your own body cannot treat your ownillness.

    All Stem cells are illegal.

Stem cells therapies are super expensive, 50K+.

Stem cells from Shark cartilage are much better.

Stem cells from Placenta or Fat have 10x the number ofcells compared to bone marrow or umbilical cord.

Trends Bone Marrow Stem Cell Therapy

Been here for a few years and continues to grow.

    Cord Blood Stem Cell Therapy

    Still Being studied.

    Not so regulated

    Consequences because of being allogenic.

    Fat tissue Stem Cell Therapy

Growing interest (easy to provide in a Drs office)

    Specially for Esthetics

Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy Is going to take even longer to be useful.

    The ProcedureCase Study:

Consultation, Blood work, Specialist assessment (if needed).

    Patient Preparation

    Procedure:

Aspiration of Bone marrow with local anesthesia

    Cell preparation, Dilution, Cell concentration

    Infusion by IV and/or Catheter

Direct injection to organs, Lumbar, joints, retro bulbar, thyroid, subcutaneous,

    injuries, etc.

    Recovery/Observation after procedure

Usually, 3 day and 2 nights trip, but could be done in 1 day.

    Patient steps for treatment

    1. Study patients condition (Questionnaire, X-Ray,MRI, blood work, reports)

    2. Medical team determines best therapy for specific

    case

    3. Coordination and Scheduling (date of procedure,

    transportation, accommodation, meals, etc.)

    4. Patient travel and logistics support.

    5. PROCEDURE

    6. Follow up (1 day, 7, 30, 60 and 90 days)
