Dear Supporters,

This will be my last message because I will retire in June 2012 after eight years as the CEO of WWF-Hong Kong. It has been a most interesting journey. The source of the interest is the calibre and passion of the people with which I have had the privilege to work. That includes the staff and members of WWF as well as members of the HKSAR government and the business people with whom we are actively engaged. As I have said numerous times in the past, it is only by working together that we can achieve great conservation outcomes.

WWF is an amazing institution that unites diverse peoples who work in harmony regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or political philosophy. We have one ambition: to conserve the resources of this planet for the benefit of all, including future generations. Our recent Earth Hour event is a prime example of this collaboration on a global scale. When I joined WWF I was told that the most pressing environmental issue was climate change because every ecosystem on this planet depends on a balanced climate—rapid changes in climate cannot be accommodated by the process of evolution.

Earth Hour is an outstanding example of how WWF works. We identify the problem, create science-based solutions, and implement the solutions by engaging the appropriate segments of our community. Earth Hour engages the public by increasing awareness of the problem on a scale necessary to bring about a change in perception and involves everyone in the solutions. This year we asked participants to set up their own energy saving targets because individuals must be part of the solution, not the source of the problem.

So I bid adieu to my colleagues and friends, and I thank you all for your support and encouragement.

Earth Hour, the largest global environmental action in history, has a rather humble origin. It was launched as a citywide event in Sydney in 2007 by WWF-Australia. The one-hour lights-off campaign, which first involved 2.2 million individuals and over 2,000 businesses, was a symbolic gesture showing the city’s determination to combat climate change. At present, it has reached more than 1.8 billion people worldwide in 150 countries and 6,500 cities and towns to take action. Among them were Libya and Iraq, two countries that joined for the first time. Individuals and organisations are showing their commitment to build a sustainable future for a living planet by switching off non-essential lights for one hour at 8:30pm on the last Saturday of March.

Earth Hour sets a global theme to reinforce the commitment to sustainability, with participating countries organising their own tailor-made events. In 2011, Singapore initiated the Earth Hour “24 degrees or higher” campaign to urge businesses across the city-state to reduce energy consumption by permanently setting the air-conditioning in office buildings to a comfortable 24 degrees Celsius. Nepal celebrated Earth Hour 2011 with a pledge to plant 108,000 saplings over one year at the sacred Garden of Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

Hong Kong first joined Earth Hour in 2009. Each year, according to surveys by TNS, a global market research company, more than 2.5 million people in Hong Kong commit to a sustainable lifestyle by turning off their non-essential lighting for one hour each year. Thousands of companies and buildings, together with all universities, hundreds of schools and the government also join in on the global action.

5春季 SPRING 2012

The city’s Earth Hour theme previously encouraged the implementation of low-carbon lifestyles and the reduction of ecological footprints. This year, the goal has evolved: everyone should set personal energy saving targets.

Earth Hour’s participants include over one thousand of the world’s man-made marvels and natural wonders. In Hong Kong, landmarks such as International Finance Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower and Tsing Ma Bridge go dark for 60 minutes. Imagine the Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, disappearing from sight for an hour in solidarity against imminent environmental threats. It’s a breath-taking reminder that we’re not alone in our journey to live sustainably.

Earth Hour is more than a symbolic pledge to show commitment towards a sustainable lifestyle. It’s an excellent opportunity to think about how to go beyond the hour and to embrace nature in Hong Kong. You can attend a lights-off yoga class, stimulate your taste buds by dining in the dark, or go for a walk and stargaze. Best of all, you can come up with your own creative activities to celebrate the event, and use the time to meditate upon the immense significance behind the lights out action. About Life

What makes WWF’s Earth Hour a truly remarkable environmental event is what it brings about after the 60 minutes of darkness. Switching off unnecessary lights for one hour on the last Saturday of March is an important gesture. Yet on its own, it has a long way to go to make sustainability a reality. To address this, WWF-Hong Kong has been calling for a collective commitment to building a sustainable planet, using this annual lights out event as a first step since 2009.

Earth Hour 2012 comes with a far-reaching theme: “Go beyond the hour, set your energy saving target”. This year, more than 3,300 buildings and corporations, all tertiary institutions and over 340 schools participated the event. In addition to switching off non-essential lights at 8:30pm (local time) on 31 March along with millions of other individuals and organisations around the world, WWF is urging participants to sign up and pledge to sustain the action beyond the hour by setting a personal energy saving target.

Every small change can yield influential results. Reducing energy consumption should, therefore, start on the personal and household level. “Hong Kong Energy Index”, co-launched by WWF and the City University of Hong Kong’s Environmental Policy Research Unit, tracks our city’s energy consumption trends. According to the index, Hong Kong households have been paying an extra HK$400 million on energy bills from 1990 to 2008 due to energy wastage. This figure is equivalent to the annual spend on electricity for 80,000 families.

“The index shows there is room for improvement in our residential consumption in energy. We should set ourselves a target to reduce energy wastage and be more energy efficient,” says Dr William Yu, Head of Climate Programme, WWF-Hong Kong. “Households can simply take two easy actions: turning off their network router if not in use and cleaning air conditioner filters regularly. This will save at least three percent of electricity consumption per year, which can

Electricity is the major source of energy consumption. To actualise effective, long-term energy saving goals, Demand Side Management (DSM) can provide the answer. DSM refers to a number of measures that can reduce peak electricity demand and electricity consumption by users, without compromising service quality or user comfort. Examples of DSM are installing energy-saving equipment and regulating power utility companies to ensure that they provide energy efficiency and conservation programmes. While individuals can make behavioural changes by fulfilling their own energy saving targets, companies, institutions and the government, which are capable of substantial energy reduction, should set DSM targets to encourage large-scale energy reduction.

WWF has produced a short video to illustrate what DSM is about. Check out www.climateers.org Climate TV section.

reduce our future energy demand in Hong Kong, mitigating the need to seek new sources of energy.”

Indeed, it doesn’t take us much effort to save energy. An action as simple as turning off an idle television can bring on noticeable energy saving results, if every individual is doing it every day. Act now! Revise your daily energy consumption and set yourself a personal energy saving target. We can do much more than switching off the lights to save electricity. Each of us can widen the scope of Earth Hour and reflect on our own energy consumption patterns. We can:

• save electricity by changing the way we use and buy appliances

• save energy on our commute to and from work or school

• save energy when we cook and bathe…

…and that’s just the start!

Your actions are a big step towards a sustainable lifestyle and will make a positive impact on the future of our planet. “With the collective actions of billions of people around the world, we aim to leave a sustainable planet for our next generation,” says Eric Bohm, WWF-Hong Kong’s CEO.

Beloved singer Kay Tse continues her role as WWF’s Earth Hour ambassador in Hong Kong. This year’s objective is “Go beyond the hour, set your energy saving target”.

WWF: The goal of this year’s Earth Hour is to set personal energy saving targets. What’s yours?

Kay: I want to drive less. As I’m always out of town, every time I return I’m keen to drive and see how Hong Kong has changed. This year, instead of driving, I’d like to cycle. For example, if I need to buy something in the neighbourhood, I’ll take a 30-minute ride on the bike with my family, each carrying a backpack. We love how we can also greet and wave “hello” to passers-bys. I think this is a great way to promote cycling.

At home, I’ll follow some energy saving tips, such as take shorter showers, wash air-conditioner filters more frequently and put bottled water in a relative empty fridge to cut down daily energy consumption.

WWF: And how are you going to draw public support for Earth Hour and go beyond that to adopt a sustainable lifestyle?

Kay: I’m going to spread the word via my own fan forum and other social networks, such as my Facebook fan page and Weibo. I will also give my friends the Earth Hour seed bookmarks and let them know about the meaning behind this global action — I’m going to spread the word through every means.

Kay is taking part in the “I Will If You Will” Celebrity Challenge—pledge to support energy saving actions, and put in your request for her! (Turn to p.12 to find out more.)

WWF launched the “My 10 Days” challenge to show you how to achieve your personal energy saving targets beyond Earth Hour. Donald Tong, Danny So and Amber Au—deejays from Commercial Radio 2—had a head start and used ten days to show that, with determination, everyone can set and meet their own personal energy saving targets! For example, Donald Tong washed his clothes by hand; Amber Au limited the use of her hairdryer to four minutes, and Danny So reduced his driving by six times. These actions can all cut down on energy consumption. If all households in Hong Kong followed the actions of the three deejays, the total electricity of the household sector could be reduced by three percent!

To make your personal energy saving target a reality, you need to make a sustainable effort in every aspect of your everyday life. In view of this, WWF launched the “I Will If You Will” challenge for public participation to make your targets more achievable and effective. The challenge comes with three progressive energy saving stages: Beginner (3% cut), Intermediate(5% cut) and Advanced(10% cut). Turn to p.12 for full details.

你只需瀏覽wwf.org.hk/iwillifyouwill,承諾參與

WWF has launched a new platform, inviting the public to pose challenges to celebrities to help save the planet. Earth Hour Ambassador Kay Tse, C AllStar and Chet Lam have agreed to join the challenge.

So all you need to do is go to wwf.org.hk/iwillifyouwill, commit to the energy saving actions from the list,

then suggest an action for one participating celebrity—for example, prepare a low-carbon meal for fans or run a 10 km marathon. To thank the supporters, the celebrity will choose to complete one suggested action—it could be yours!

Earth Hour this year had a record-breaking 150 participating countries. Among them were Libya and Iraq, two countries that joined for the first time.

Based on figures provided by both CLP and HK Electric, electricity consumption in Hong Kong dropped by around four percent from 8pm to 9pm during Earth Hour 2012. This drop in electricity consumption is equivalent to eliminating 146 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which would require 6,300 trees to absorb in one year.
