Introduction to Nda: The Yoga of Sacred Sound

    WhyLearnSanSkrit?

    The Ancient Vibratory Language

Sanskrit is an ancient, precise, vibratorylanguage. As one of the oldest knownlanguages in existence, all languages have

their roots in Sanskrit. The ancient Seers, theis, who cognized these subtle sounds of creationemanating at the Source, identified Sanskrit asthe language of Consciousness.

The Sanskrit name for an object is derived fromthe combination of precise sound vibrationsand silent gaps emanating from the structureof that object. This is why Saskrita means, perfected language in the sense that bothRelative and Absolute aspects of existenceunite as vibrations of Consciousness.

Just as the sounds of Sanskrit arise from the basisof creation, they are also the means throughwhich the mind is directed back to its Source. In this way, the Sanskrit language provides a

powerful yogic tool for quieting the fluctuationsof mind as described in Patajalis YogaStras. When Sanskrit verses are properlypronounced, the mind is pulled into the fieldof Pure Consciousness the highest meditativereality. Sanskrit is the most effective soundmedium to induce deep states of transcendence,or meditative awareness, to transition the mindfrom chaos to eternal tranquility at its source to Samdhi.

    Subjective Inner Experience

An academic approach to studying languagesstresses the need to maintain scholarly objectivity, however, Sanskrit is a language of sound vibrationand personal inner experience that relies totally onsubjectivity for its ultimate meaning, expression andcomprehension. When observing Vedicpaits inSanskrit training from early childhood, it is apparent thatthe purest and most effective approach to learningthis language is through direct subjective experience.A traditional student of Sanskrit will spend manyyears reciting and memorizing tens of thousands ofverses from the Vedas, committing vast amounts ofsacred knowledge to memory without ever dwellingon the specific meaning of the verses, their philosophicalcontent, or their grammatical structure. It is onlyafter apaithas memorized all the ritual chantsand movements accompanying associated rituals(yajas) that they will attempt to understand the

meaning of what they have spent their entire dailychildhood and adolescence reciting.

Yogis who study Sanskrit report that their yogapractice ascends to a deeper and more profoundlevel. This is because they attain a solid basis forgrasping the deep knowledge of Vedic traditionat the core of all Yogic practices. Also, recitingand meditating on the subtle sounds of Sanskritattunes the physiology to the vibratory nature ofconsciousness at its source.

In the same way that the practice of Yoga sanaopens channels for the flow of energy through thebody, both subtle and gross, the practice of Sanskritopens channels for the flow of energy through themind while simultaneously raising awareness tohigher consciousness.
