Law enforcement, fire fighting, emergency services and other public agencies across the United States are receiving Polaris RANGERs free of charge as part of “Operation RANGER ,” a community outreach program of the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. (USSTC). Since Operation RANGER was launched in 2002, more than 160 of the versatile Polaris utility vehicles have been awarded to agencies in 49 states. Agencies interested in acquiring vehicle submit grant applications to USSTC, which has also awarded them to wildlife conservation groups and search and rescue teams. When The Wapello County (Iowa) Sheriff’s Department received a RANGER 6x6 through Operation RANGER in May, the vehicle was presented to Sheriff Don Kirkendall by Tommy Johnson, Jr., a six-time NHRA drag racing champion and former Ottumwa, Iowa, resident. (USSTC is the parent company of Johnson’s main sponsor.) “After I sent in the application [for the RANGER], we had a couple situations where we could have used a RANGER, [including a] manhunt and some lost boys,” said Wapello Chief Deputy Mark Miller. “With this RANGER, we’ll be able to get a lot more places.” The Peoria, Arizona, Police Department also received a RANGER 6x6 through the program. A department spokesperson said it would be used to access remote areas of desert and river bottoms in the Peoria area, as well as for patrol work and as part of the Neighborhood Action team. As government personnel and volunteers searched for survivors and cleaned up wreckage from the December 2004 tsunami that struck countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Maldives, Polaris RANGER utility vehicles provided the workers with outstanding mobility. The RANGERs were provided by the Polaris international business division and were used to transport personnel and supplies on areas that were pummeled by the gigantic ocean waves. In many coastal areas, what has been pristine resort and beachfront property was turned into a debris-covered disaster zone by the tsunami, and the RANGERs allowed workers to traverse rough terrain and wreckage to keep the recovery effort moving. When employees at Town & Country Motorsports in Chandler, Arizona, looks at a RANGER, they don’t just see a utility vehicle, they see an opportunity for customizing. In the past few years, the Town & Country staff has gained a reputation for customizing RANGERs with incredible custom paint jobs and accessories like chrome roll bars, chrome wheels, chrome brush guards, custom grilles, stereos and more. The custom paint is usually applied by Denny Bloom of Kreative Kolor. Sales Manager Matt Sheridan says all types of customers have purchased the custom RANGERs, and that they’re especially popular at the sand dunes, where off-road enthusiasts insist on style along with performance.
