Present NARS One of the Largest Agricultural Research System in the world with

the largest number of scientific personnel of any developing country engaged in research and education

Manpower above 30,000 scientists with more than 1.0 lakh supporting staff

Present system comprises two main streams, ICAR at National level and Agricultural Universities at State level

Other agencies like Private & Voluntary Organizations also playing key role in Agriculture R&D

About ICAR Recommendation of the Royal commission on Agriculture ICAR

was established on 16th July, 1929. Before Independence known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research.

Works under DARE, Min of Agriculture, GOI

Coordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture

MOA- MOS(A) – DG - DDG (8) (Crop science, Horti., NRM, Animal Sci., Fisheries, Agril Engg, Agril Extn , and Agril Edu.) ADG(24)- ICAR institutes

In 1975 ARS & ASRB was created to facilitate optimum utilization of manpower

ICAR Institutes National Institutes/Deemed Universities ( 4 )-research, teaching and training for

manpower development IARI, IVRI,NDRI, and CIFE

Central Research Institutes ( 51) Basic and Applied research on specific crops and transferring the results to field. Crops, Horticulture, Resource Management Institutes, Technological institutes, Animal Science Fisheries and Social science etc.

National Bureaux ( 6)- to collect, conserve and initiate such measures as would lead to long-term productivity of basic resources like plants, animals, fish etc

Project Directorates ( 22)- Single commodity or group of commodities like oil seeds, pulses, vegetables etc. Basically same as the Coordinated Research Projects only but upgraded the infrastructure with added responsibilities

National Research Centers ( 17 )- Centers of Fundamental Research headed by eminent scientists in particular areas. Designed to concentrate on those crops and commodities not well served by the research institutes.

Established to meet the state/regional needs

First SAU established in 1960 at Pantnagar in UP

Every State having Agricultural University, for North Eastern States Central Agricultural University

Agricultural Universities divided into Agricultural, Horticultural and Veterinary and Fisheries Universities

At present more than 60 SAU’s in the Country
