Think different: Instead of reformulation of tablets that were sensitive to moisture, Dr. Persson invented the drying tablet now found in many tube stoppers.

Business background

NMEs: Low probability of success

• One NME costs $ 1,5-1,8 US billions. • 1 out of 10 000 substances becomes a marketable product . • New NMEs approved by FDA annually: 22.

Generics

• High probability of pharmaceutical success .• No commercial protection.• New generics approved by FDA annually: >400.

New formulations of well-known substances

• High probability of pharmaceutical success .• Commercial protection (e.g. patent on drug delivery).• New formulations approved by FDA 2010 :46

Pharma industry strategy to success

Pharma industry has turned from NMEs (New Molecular Entities) to:• Generics.• New formulations of well-known substances.

Drug targeting and/or drug release

Drug release

Well-known technology. Typical example: Delayed release of a drug from a slowly degrading polymer implant.

Drug targeting – Aiming before shooting

• Emerging technology. • Used mainly in cancer therapy: • Increases concentration of drug at target tissue. • Drug activity, but not side-effects, is increased.

Well-known drug + targeting technology.

Commercially protected product

Drug targeting - Seek & Heal™

Bacteria show a different metabolism from that of healthy human tissue. Seek & Heal™ particles use this odd metabolism for identification, adhere to them, and then release the drug.

The bacteria are therefore exposed to high concentrations of the drug, compared to the rest of the body.

Mechanism

Product

Biomimetic (=imitates living matter) nanoparticles (=damn small) in a tissue friendly solution. The particles encapsulates a pharmaceutical drug. The particles selectively adheres to bacteria.

Bacteria targeted by particles encapsulating a red dye after 0, 3, 6 and 26 hours.

Microbial resistance towards antibiotics

Threats to human health

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest threats to human health worldwide. The problem worsens each year.

US hospital acquired infections cost annually $ 30 000 million.

Use of Seek & Heal™ particles

As bacteria becomes resistant towards antibiotics, this type of infection treatment is rapidly running out of hands.

Prophylactic disinfection of surgical wounds

Annual costs for surgical wound infections in USA is $ 1 600 million.

To prevent infection patients are treated prophylactically with antibiotics. If an infections still occurs, the patient is treated with additional antibiotics.

Antiseptic substances are not used at hospitals because they harm human healthy tissue.

Seek & Heal™ particles target only bacteria. Particles with encapsulated antiseptic hence makes it possible to kill normal of resistant bacteria, without harming human healthy tissue.

Prophylactic disinfection of surgical wounds

A liquid for washing surgical wounds before they are sewn.

• Bacteria are killed (normal or resistant).• Healthy tissue and blood components are not damaged.

The product disinfects the wound without influencing wound healing.

Also other forms of wounds may be disinfected.

Results in vitro:

• Seek & Heal™ kills bacteria.• Seek & Heal™ does not harm blood.

According to in vitro results, prophylactic disinfection of surgical wounds is possible.

A new paradigm in wound care

Future possibilities for Seek & Heal™

Therapies for diseases in organs like sinuses, liver, spleen or kidneys.

First generation products

Keep it simple! External applications!Suitable substances for inclusion in Seek & Heal™ particles are e.g. antiseptics and antibiotics with restricted applicability.

Injection therapies, targeting individual cells, or groups of cells:• Against metastases.• Contrast enhancement in MRI (paramagnetic materials).

Second generation products

Third generation products
