COWBOYS, CABALLEROS AND COPLAND!A family concert conceived and developed by Michael Barrett and Jamie Bernstein, narrated by Jamie.

Aaron Copland, the much-beloved patriarch of 20th-century American orchestral music, was a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn. How in the world did he become our musical spokesman for the American West?! Using excerpts from “Billy the Kid,” “Rodeo” and “El Salon Mexico,” Jamie shows how Copland’s music conveys the adventurous energy, the shy sentiment and the great open spaces of the American frontier. A western-style singalong begins the concert, so kids can learn the cowboy tunes and Mexican melodies that Copland so ingeniously reshapes, intertwines and transmogrifies in his music. And for the finale, the audience will take part in a sit-down square dance to the tune of “Hoedown!”

and COMING soon. . .“Happy 250th Birthday, Mozart – You Kid, You!”concerts on Duke Ellington & George Gershwin

fOR GROWNuPSBERNSTEIN ON BROADWAYAn evening of music from Leonard Bernstein’s Broadway musicals, narrated by his daughter Jamie. With orchestra and four soloists. Conceived and developed by Michael Barrett and Jamie Bernstein.

“On the Town,” “Wonderful Town,” “Candide,” “West Side Story”— what a thrilling procession of musicals from the composer Leonard Bernstein! Now his daughter Jamie gives a new generation of audiences an inside look at these marvelous 20th-century classics of Broadway. Melodies soar, sonic textures shimmer, and propulsive rhythms dance in this irrepressible program. Aided by four singers plus orchestra, Jamie brings the songs and ballet music of Bernstein’s most beloved Broadway masterpieces to life though her musical insights and frank and funny anecdotes, and gives a rare glimpse into the creative process behind “West Side Story.”

WE ARE WOMENAn evening of Bernstein music conceived and developed by Michael Barrett and Jamie Bernstein, narrated by Jamie. For four singers, piano, clarinet, drums and bass.

“We Are Women!” These exuberant lyrics kick off an evening of songs by Leonard Bernstein. While the lead-off is from Bernstein’s classic musical “Candide,” it’s now telling a new story. In “We Are Women: the Songs of Leonard Bernstein,” we follow a mother and daughter as they navigate the tricky terrain of the men in their lives. Along the way they learn to accept themselves—and to delight in the love of others as well. Ranging from art songs and opera to such Broadway shows as “On the Town” and “West Side Story,” Bernstein’s evocative, emotional music easily lends itself to telling this new tale. Rich with comedy and drama, “We Are Women” unfolds through the compelling narration of Bernstein’s daughter Jamie.

fOR kIDS & fAMILIESTHE BERNSTEIN BEATA family concert about rhythm featuring the spirited music of Leonard Bernstein, conceived and developed by Michael Barrett and Jamie Bernstein, narrated by Jamie.

Conductor, composer and educator Leonard Bernstein was one of the most beloved and influential Americans in 20th-century culture. His daughter Jamie wants the next century of kids to find out how cool he was! Using the format of her father’s groundbreaking televised “Young People’s Concerts,” Jamie introduces kids to Bernstein and his irresistible music, including selections from his Broadway shows “On the Town” and “West Side Story.” Jamie reveals the secret of understanding the complex rhythms in her father’s music: break ‘em down into “hot dogs and hamburgers!” Audience volunteers help Jamie onstage — and during one piece, everyone gets to shout “MAMBO!!” at the top of their lungs!

EXTREME ORCHESTRA A family concert conceived and developed by Michael Barrett and Jamie Bernstein, narrated by Jamie.

An orchestra is like a collective super-athlete: highly coordinated, intensely trained, and capable of astonishing feats of beauty. So, let’s put the orchestra to the test! Let’s make them play the most challenging music in the repertoire. Using famous works by Tchaikovsky, Mahler and others, the orchestra will play musical examples the wrong way on purpose, to show what’s involved in playing them the right way. In addition to experiencing an orchestral “train wreck,” the audience will take part in singing and chanting games -- as well as a chance to participate in a drawing in which two winners get to conduct the orchestra themselves!
