About Cataract Surgery

Cataracts occur when the natural lens inside your eye becomes opaque, rather than clear. This causes a reduction in light transmission to the back of the eye (the retina), and can result in symptoms such as blurred vision and light sensitivity.

Some cataracts are very mild, and do not affect the vision significantly, while others can be very severe, causing total blindness in the affected eye(s). Most cataracts develop slowly, as a result of ageing.

In developed countries, the most common procedure for removing cataracts is by a technique known as phacoemulsification (‘phaco’). This involves fragmenting the natural lens by ultrasound, and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The procedure is generally performed under topical anesthetic, on an out-patient basis (which means that you can go home on the same day).

How are cataracts removed?

Artificial lenses come in varying types, and varying degrees of power. In replacing a cloudy lens with an IOL implant, cataract surgery offers an opportunity to alter the prescription of the operated eye. This means that if you currently need glasses or contact lenses to see, your surgeon will choose a replacement lens that aims to significantly reduce your prescription.

The lens pThe lens power required is determined by a technique called biometry, which involves taking various measurements of the eye and inserting the data into mathematical equations. The IOL is chosen on the basis of these results and other measurements.

How is the artificial lens (IOL) chosen?

Cataract surgery can be a daunting prospect. There are many different providers to choose from, and it can be difficult to decide who to trust. The most important thing is to take your time over your decision, and to allow yourself to investigate your options thoroughly. Below are some of the main reasons why we think London Vision Clinic is worth your serious consideration for cataract surgery:

Why choose London Vision Clinic?

Your Consultant surgeon, Mr David O'Brart, has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon since 1996. Following his qualification as an Ophthalmic Surgeon in 1990, he trained in corneal and small-incision cataract surgery.

Unlike at many other clinics, London Vision Clinic’s cataract surgery patients spend a long time with their surgeon both pre-operatively and post-operatively. This ensures a highly personalised experience for every patient, and gives you ample time to have all of your questions answered by an expert.
