The Boise Veterans Affairs Medical Center offers an ASHP accredited PGY2 residency program in Ambulatory Care open for 3 residents each year.

Program Purpose: PGY2 pharmacy residen-

cy programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy

(Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy resi-

dency programs to contribute to the develop-

ment of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas

of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents

with opportunities to function independently as

practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating

accumulated experience and knowledge and in-

corporating both into the provision of patient

care or other advanced practice settings. Resi-

dents who successfully complete an accredited

PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for ad-

vanced patient care, academic, or other special-

ized positions, along with board certification, if

available.

Required Experiences

• PACT Team Clinical Pharmacist (4 months)

• Women’s Clinic (4-8 weeks)

• Outpatient Infectious Diseases (4 weeks)

• Rural Outpatient Clinic (8 weeks)

• Longitudinal: Resident-managed heart failure

clinic, leadership seminars, interprofessional

QI project, outcomes analysis project,

discharge staffing, ambulatory practice

management.

The Program Residency Opportunities

• Customized Electives: Telehealth, academics, geriatrics, mental health, oncology, and more.

• Credentialed clinical pharmacist with ambulatory scope of practice within the institution

Clinical Training Site

The Boise VAMC is the training site for PGY1 phar-

macy and PGY-2 in ambulatory care and psychiatric

pharmacy. The hospital is a teaching site for Univer-

sity of Washington & Family Practice medical resi-

dents, psychology interns, PA, NP, RN trainees, and

Idaho State University pharmacy students. We are

honored to be one of seven Centers of Excellence in

Primary Care Education in which PGY2 residents are

core participants. Each resident will have the oppor-

tunity to serve as a clinical pharmacist in our primary

care training clinic, for a rural outpatient clinic, and

will complete an interprofessional project related to

the provision of patient care in an ambulatory set-

ting. Residents have the opportunity to earn a

Teaching & Learning Certificate through Idaho State

University.

Applicant Qualifications and Selection

The applicant must be a graduate of a school of

pharmacy accredited by the American Council on

Pharmaceutical Education, be a U.S. citizen, possess
