ABOUT 1 History: Amar Kutir was founded by freedom fighter Late Susen Mukhopadhya in the early 1923, with similar objectives as envisaged by Rabindranath Tagore in his experiments in rural reconstruction at Sriniketan. The organization was closed down by British Government for accommodating freedom fighters in 1932. During this period Amar Kutir was raided by the British rulers and Mr. Mukherjee was put behind bars till 1937. The activities of Amar Kutir came to a halt. During his years in prison Mukherjee met several revolutionary leaders, notably Panna Lal Dasgupta and Moni Ganguly. From 1938 the British Government relaxed its rules and started releasing many of the revolutionaries from prison. The released begun living and working in Amar Kutir establishing a commune. They were instrumental in organizing night classes and spreading political ideas amongst the rural masses. When the World War II broke out in 1939, many of the revolutionaries left Amar Kutir and were directly involved in organizing Peasant Movement in the villages. Many of them were active during the Quit India movement in 1942. After independence, Amar Kutir became a cooperative to rejuvenate and develop rural handicrafts, reflecting the ideals of self-help and sustainable rural development advocated by Tagore. One of the veterans of Amar Kutir, Late Pannalal Dasgupta, renowned freedom fighter and social activist then registered the organization as Amar Kutir Society for Rural Development (AKSRD) in 1978, dreaming of a self supported organization capable for rural development. The society, since its inception in 1978, has been organising training and production of traditional handicrafts products of the district and now supports more than thousands artisans with its 100 permanent staff. It cater to the rural artisans of handicrafts belonging to 50 varied communities mainly from the Birbhum District. The Crafts Development Centre was introduced in 1992, which expanded AKSRD's scope to include lac-ware, cane and bamboo, woodwork, terra cotta, dokra, sola pith, batik, and kantha stitch. The impact was rapidly felt as skills are now continuously upgraded, which led to design development and extend market opportunities. SHGs engaged in crafts production in leather, kantha stitch, and batik print involving some 450 crafts persons under the AHVY programme, are now working with AKSRD with enhanced production capacity and sales. AKSRD is committed to development of craftsmen in the district through conducting training programme for skill upgradation, design development and marketing. Present Activities: Recently Amar Kutir has developed a designer's crafts center cum export mart with the help of ASIDE scheme. The society has 27 acre of land and reasonable infrastructure to support more artisans of the districts especially for Tasar Silk, batik print, and kantha stitch work, leather work etc. Presently the society is engaged in skill building of the artisans of batik print and leather work with new technology. AKSRD funds 25% of its profit for programs in health, education, and environment to strengthen the neighborhoods communities in a holistic way. Three areas of its interest for expansion includes Environment, Training and Medical Clinics. The society has developed an Eco- park in its campus for nature lovers and environment consciousness with assistance from Block and District authorities.
