About WIUEstablished in 1899, Western Illinois Normal and Training School opened its doors September 23, 1902 to 229 students. Throughout the years, Western Illinois grew and its name changed from Western Illinois State College to Western Illinois University on July 5, 1957.

Today, Western Illinois University offers a variety of bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, pre-professional programs, two doctoral degrees, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs.

Recognized as a “Best Midwestern College” by The Princeton Review for 12 consecutive years and as one of 39 public universities ranked a top tier “Best Midwestern University” by U.S. News & World Report, Western Illinois University (WIU) serves approximately 10,418 students at its traditional, residential campus in Macomb and its metropolitan, non-residential location in Moline, Illinois. The WIU-Macomb and -Quad Cities campuses are comprised of accomplished faculty, state-of-the-art technology and facilities, and a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities. Western is a comprehensive University, offering 67 undergraduate and 36 graduate degree programs, which includes a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies.

Western offers a broad-based athletics program, sponsoring 20 NCAA Division I intercollegiate varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League. WIU is the cultural center of the region. University Libraries house an extensive collection and offer online database access to thousands of academic periodic journals and publications.

WIU-Macomb, IL (Student Population: 9,220): A traditional, residential four-year campus with select graduate programs, including a doctorate in education, WIU-Macomb is located in the heart of west central Illinois in Macomb (population 20,000). Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago. Macomb is located approximately 75 miles from the Quad Cities International Airport (Moline, IL) and 70 miles from the Greater Peoria Regional Airport (Peoria, IL).

WIU-Quad Cities (Student Population: 1,198): The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its metropolitan, non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000). The Quad Cities (population 376,000) rests on the banks of the Mississippi River and is comprised of Moline and Rock Island in western Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in eastern Iowa. Moline, Illinois is home to the Quad Cities International Airport.

Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian Dissertation Fellowship & Visiting Professor Teaching Scholars Programs In honor of the Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian, a distinguished and accomplished alumnus of Western Illinois University who has made monumental contributions to society as a pivotal leader, activist, and organizer in the Civil Rights Movement, WIU is offering teaching opportunities to graduate students and current academic professionals who are pursuing careers as university faculty and are entering the final year of a terminal degree or doctoral program or have completed a terminal degree or doctoral program. As a C.T. Vivian Dissertation Fellow or Visiting Professor, dissertation fellow scholars will teach one course during the fall and spring semesters and visiting professor scholars will teach a traditional faculty load. Participants in both programs will continue their research, and contribute to the university community.

The C.T. Vivian Dissertation Fellowships and Visiting Professorships are designed to provide professional teaching experiences, mentoring, and potential tenure-track employment opportunities within academic departments and schools at WIU that are strongly committed to cultural diversity. Applicants from diverse cultural backgrounds, especially those from historically underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply. The C.T. Minimum requirements for Dissertation Fellow applicants include: • U.S. citizen or permanent resident • Completed master’s degree • Enrollment in a terminal degree program (Ph.D., Ed.D., MFA, etc.) • Academic background in one of the disciplines taught at WIU, where fellowships are available

Minimum requirements for Visiting Professor applicants: • U.S. citizen or permanent resident • Terminal degree completed • Academic background in one of the disciplines taught at WIU
