a)Abolish- to do away with something
b)Abolitionist- a person who worked to end slavery
c)Emancipation- to free from slavery
d)Suffrage- the right to vote
e)Suffragist- a person who worked to help women gain
the right to vote
f)Advocate- a person who speaks/writes in support of a
certain cause
II. Abolitionist Beliefs
a)Most abolitionists demanded the immediate
freeing of all slaves
b)Abolitionists believed slavery was morally wrong
c)Slavery was cruel and inhumane (Inhumane-
lacking kindness, humanity or compassion)
d)Slavery was a violation of the principles of
democracy

were slaves
b)Married John Tubman, a free African
American. Fearing she would be sold
South, she escaped to Canada
c)After escaping, she made several
return trips to Maryland to help about
300 other slaves escape on the
Underground Railroad

he was 25
