PROPOSED 2017 FESTIVAL FORMAT

SPLITTING THE FESTIVALS INTO SENIOR AND JUNIOR IN 2017

• Over 70% in agreement

• Senior Festival to be held end of Week 9 Term 2 Band: Thursday, Friday, Saturday Orchestra: Sunday

• Junior Festival to be held end of Week 7 Term 3 Band: Thursday, Friday, Saturday Orchestra: Sunday

OPPORTUNITY FOR ENSEMBLE DIRECT FEEDBACK TIME

• Over 80% in agreement

• Each ensemble will have the opportunity to request a workshop session with one of the adjudicators directly after they have performed when registering

CHOICE OF VENUE SIZE• 34% agree with choice• 40% don’t have a preference

• 26% the festival is the only time the ensemble performs in a music specific venue so the opportunity and impression for these students is a strong consideration

• Each ensemble will have the opportunity to request a small or large venue. 2017 will be held at Churchlands SHS where both the Concert Hall and the Paul Latham Auditorium will be utilised

• The final decision of venue allocation will depend on demand in the preferred session and size of ensemble

ENSEMBLES ENCOURAGED TO LISTEN TO EACH OTHER

• 90% in agreement with a form of peer to peer listening

• Those ensembles involved in direct feedback workshops will not be charged an extra fee for the adjudicators time

• In exchange for the direct adjudicator feedback each ensemble involved will then listen to the next ensemble performing; in a guided listening activity based on some of the points they were focusing in on their own workshop

DISADVANTAGED ENSEMBLES ABLE TO APPLY FOR UP TO 2 EXTERNAL PLAYERS

• Over 80% in agreement

• Small, isolated, young and disadvantaged ensembles will have the freedom to apply upon registration to include up to 2 players not from their school cohort to help the ensemble create a more authentic and balanced sound. Approval to cover an instrument/part if a child is sick/unable to perform, will be considered on the day of the performance

• The desire is to help promote collegiality and provide the best educational experience for each ensemble/student and the final decision on these applications will be made by ABODA WA (Inc.) in conjunction with IMSS

ADDRESSING SHORTCOMINGS IN THE CURRENT REPERTOIRE LISTS

• Requirement for Australian Compositions was not supported

• Freedom in repertoire choice is obviously desired

• 2017 will see a vast expansion in the number of pieces on the current repertoire lists for both bands and orchestras

ONE TO ONE CONDUCTING FEEDBACK

• Over 90% in agreement for 1-1 feedback opportunity

• Conductors wanting immediate and direct one to one conductor feedback will have the opportunity for a privatesession with the conducting feedback person whilst their ensemble is listening to the next ensemble

• This is opt in only and a USB of your performance will be available to you and the conducting feedback support person as a reference

CHANGE IN VIDEO FORMAT

• Over 90% agreement in changing the current video format

• Current video to DVD format is expensive. It takes a great deal of time for post production to be completed and consequently for conductors to receive

• Hand held video file transferred straight to USB means less cost and instant turn around and access for conductor and during support sessions

HOW DO WE MAKE THIS WORK?

• The proposal endeavours to cater for ensembles desiring to cope with the least amount of change in 2017 by only requiring ensembles to adjust to the new dates

• Performing and receiving a spoken and written adjudication along with an ensemble photo will remain the basic format for those who wish to introduce their ensemble to the new options slowly

• Those ensembles wishing for greater educational opportunities can opt into the new session layout which will run in two venues simultaneously

BENEFITS OF DOVETAIL TIMETABLE

• Only one venue required for the performance warm up and one for photos

• Due to the extension of the format the number of ensembles on site at one time will remain the same as current

• Due to a reduction in cost of the video format, two specialist adjudicators will be employed in each venue

• One specific conducting support person will be available at all times

2017 IN SUMMARY• The only mandated change for everyone in 2017 is the dates

• Festival repertoire lists will be greatly expanded

• Adjudicator workshops and peer to peer listening is available for all

• P.L. Conductor 1-1 feedback has no trade off requirement in 2017

• Disadvantaged ensembles can apply for up to 2 extra players

• Video files will be available to you immediately

• Adjudications and certificates can be collected by or posted to everyone at the end of the festival. Individual ensemble results will no longer be posted on line or announced. It is entirely at the discretion of each ensemble whether or not they wish to make public their results
