Barraba Central School Hornblower – 7 February, 2012

Hornblower 2012 – Term 1, Week 3

Relieving Principal

Welcome

Welcome to the Barraba Central School

community. It is my privilege to be the relieving

Principal this year. This task has enormous

responsibilities and I trust I am up to the task.

There is much to learn.

I welcome Mr Chand to the role of Deputy

Principal and Mrs Campbell as our Head Teacher

– Teaching and Learning.

I asked Gary how he made time to get all that

needs to be done in a day; more particularly I

asked when he would put together this newsletter.

He replied that it was with a glass of red wine on a

Sunday afternoon. Well, I tried that but the wine

wouldn’t dry dark enough so now I am using ink.

And, now for some Mathematics. Today is my

birthday. I share it with my mother in law and Mrs

Chand. I also share it with 1/365 of the 7 billion

people on the planet.

7 000 000 000 365 = 19 178 082. Which is about

the population of Australia, and I thought I was

special!

Our New Teacher

The year is off to a flying start and I would like to

introduce you to Mr Mamai. Mr Mamai comes

from Armidale and he has classroom rules that are

strictly enforced. We hope that Mr Mamai’s

daughter, in Year 9 this year; will be moving out

with him.

Attendance

The Department of Education has some strict rules

on how we report and monitor attendance. I will

include an important article that is essential

reading for all parents and carers.

Apply for an Exemption

The rain has disrupted travel for many of our

students. I rang all parents who I believed could

not get their children to school due to flooding.

You are eligible for an exemption from school for

that time. Also if you are going on holidays and

there is some aspect of learning involved, which is

often the case, please let me know before you

go. Exemptions are given before the event in

almost all cases.

Support Teachers

We have a very comprehensive curriculum this

year and our Quality Teaching goals are

supported by Mrs Wilson and Mr Arrua. Mr Arrua

will be working in the Primary Campus supporting

Mrs Irving and Mrs King so we can improve our

delivery of Literacy and Numeracy outcomes

through programmes including Best Start in the

Kindergarten, TOWN, QuickSmart & Accelerated

Literacy in the other primary classes.

Primary Leadership Team

On Friday 17th February, we induct our Primary

Leadership Team at a special assembly

commencing at 2:20pm in the primary hall.

Danger, Danger, Danger

Parents picking their primary children up from

school need to cross the road rather than calling

your child across the road. The Department

identifies this as a risk and we need to inform

parents of that risk.

GENERAL INFORMATION AND UPDATES

Update your details Have you moved, got a new email address or changed phone numbers? Please inform the front office with any changes in your living situation so we can contact you if the need arises.

Beat the heat Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Remind your child to protect themselves from sun and heat exposure while at school by:

Reducing their exposure to the sun, wherever possible

Wearing hats in the playground to protect the face, neck and ears

Playing in shaded areas, particularly during peak times of UV levels

drinking plenty of water

Using 30+ broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Australians throw away 3.3 million tonnes of food every year – up to a quarter of the country's food supplies - mainly because we purchase too much. Consider planning your meals and only buy what you need. Reduce packaging in your child’s lunchbox and

Primary school Selective high schools placement test – 15 March, 2012. The selective high schools test is held annually for Year 6 students wishing to enter a selective government high school. For key dates, online applications and more information for parents, see: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/k-6assessments/shsplacement/index.php

High school Time to get fit Its summer, so encourage your teen to get outdoors and get moving. The five top ways to maintain a healthy body mass index and reduce the chance of lifestyle induced health problems are to:

1. Get active every day 2. Choose water as a drink 3. Eat more fruit and vegetables 4. Switch off the screen and get active 5. Eat fewer snacks and select healthier

alternatives Better still, set a good example yourself. For more tips and ways to improve your family’s health and fitness go to: www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/kids-

teens.aspx

Uniform Thank you to the Students (and Mum’s) for starting

the new school year in uniform. The children look very smart in their uniforms especially the new

Kindergarten. Due to the huge request for new

uniforms, many items have been out of stock. New supplies are starting to arrive and the remainder

should be available in a matter of days. Check with office staff for availability of required items. Sorry for

the inconvenience.

Attendance The law in NSW states that all children between the

ages of six and seventeen years of age are required to

attend school regularly. It is the responsibility of parents to make sure that

their children attend school every day and to provide an explanation for all absences within seven days of

the absence.

Parental explanations for absences can be made verbally (by phone or in person) or in writing.

Acceptable reasons for absences include sickness, injury, trips to the dentist, physiotherapist, optometrist

or other specialist services – if appointments cannot be

arranged out of school hours. Leave can be granted in the event of misadventure or

unforseen events (eg: fire or flood); family holidays which cannot be taken out of school time; domestic

necessity which may include serious illness or death of an immediate family member; moving house;

participation in special events (eg: eisteddfods) or for

religious or ceremonial occasions. Parents are encouraged to apply for an exemption

from school for their child if the period of leave will be (or has been) lengthy.

Primary Induction of Captains

The Primary Leadership Team induction ceremony will

be held at 2:20pm on Friday 17th February. Family and friends are welcome to join us.

Pavers

The order for the second drive for Name Pavers will be finalised next week. If you still haven’t had an

opportunity to order, please do so at the primary office as soon as possible. Order forms are available at the

office or ring and one can be sent home or

emailed/faxed to you.

Theo!

Theo (from Mrs Irving’s class) has lost his passport

and travel journal. He is really concerned as he cannot leave the country again without it. If you have him at

home (by mistake!) or know where we can locate them (he is so untidy he may have lost it somewhere

in the classroom) PLEASE let Mrs Irving know or send

them into school so his travels can begin again…he has some wild adventures planned for this year! Thank

you everyone.

Canteen Hours A reminder that canteen hours at the primary canteen

are:

Mondays and Fridays and for the second half of

lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the

second half of lunch for the sale of icy poles, drinks and chips.

THE SECONDARY CANTEEN WILL BE CLOSED AT LUNCHTIME ON FRIDAYS.

What is Miniball?

Miniball is a form of basketball specifically modified and

designed for Infant School children (Kinder – Year 2) The rings are lowered to make it easier to score.

The ball used is smaller and lighter for small children.

Miniball is non-competitive and it’s about having fun

All players are recognised for their efforts

Right now Miniball costs just $4 each week.

Games

Games played on Thursday afternoon in Tamworth,

commencing at 4.30pm with Kinder/Year 1 and Year 2 at

5.15pm. All games are in two 12 minute halves, with “court

coaches” provided for games to help all players have fun.

2012 BARRABA JUNIOR SHOWGIRL

COMPETITION ----------------------------------------------------------The Barraba P.A.& H. Association would like to invite girls

from the age of 6 to 17 years to be a part of the 2012 Junior

Showgirl Competition. There are prizes to be won, fun to be

had and experience to be gained.

Entries in the 6 to 14 years age group will be taken at the

show with the Secretary or in front of the grandstand

between 10am and 11am on the 3rd

of March. Judging will

take place at 11am and girls are expected to discuss their

judged on the way they conduct themselves and how well

they communicate with others.

An information day will be held on 26th

February from 11am

for girls aged 15 to 17 years. The day will cover what the

competition is about, public speaking, etiquette, hair and

competition will be announced at the Show on Saturday 3rd

March.

The Senior Showgirl competition will be held in November

2012; entrants must be 18 years of age and under 25 on the
