2 Overview
2.1 Feature Introduction
When the Abis interface is extended over satellite, there is no change or effect on BSS
functions. The main problem is the transmission delay, which affects Abis signaling
processing, voice processing, and clock processing. In most cases, the single-way delay
is around 250-280ms for GEO (geostationary earth orbit).
By adjusting the related timer, increasing time for data receiving and dispatch and time
for retransmission delay as well as caching data, the ZTE BSS system can effectively
remove the negative impact such as delay, jitter and other effects caused by satellite
transmission, thus ensuring voice and data service quality.

The Abis interface supports satellite transmission through TDM transmission and IP
transmission.
During SDCCH establishment, an immediate assignment command is sent in advance,
and access delay is thus decreased.

3 Technical Description
Applying satellite transmission on the Abis interface does not present functional changes
to the BSS but only brings a delay of hundreds of milliseconds (depending upon satellite
orbit altitude) to the Abis interface, so this chapter focuses on configuring the satellite
transmission modes and dealing with the delay.
For BTS V3 series base stations transmitting data through the LAPD protocol, the
change needs to be sent to the software through DIP switches. Figure 3-1 shows the DIP
switches for the BTS V3 series base stations.

Figure 3-1 ZXG10 BTS V3 DIP Switch Schematic Diagram
In the above figure, the SATE bit determines whether to use the satellite Abis link (0
indicates the common Abis interface, while 1 indicates the satellite Abis interface). The
type of the Abis interface is set to satellite through the DIP switch. After the base station
is energized, the OM reads the DIP code, configures the Abis interface type to satellite
and notifies this change to the LAPD module. The LAPD module then sends the change
to the BSC through the authentication message ID_Request of the link. After the
authentication is successful, both sides of the LAPD link are informed that the type of the
Abis interface and the following parameter changes are made:
The frame re-transmitting timer is increased from 400ms to 1200ms.
The size of the receiving and transmitting sliding windows is expanded from 16 to 32.
These changes are used to deal with a transmission delay increase of 250ms to 1000ms.
For base station transmission through the IP protocol, such as the S8001 and SDR base
stations, no configuration of the DIP switch is made and parameters of the transmission
protocol for the bearing part are automatically adjusted by the SCTP protocol stack.
With the Abis interface over satellite feature enabled, the base station attribute needs to
be set to the Abis interface satellite transmission on the backend system. The
parameters of the data services will be adjusted in the same way as the LAPD link
parameters are adjusted. Such adjustment has nothing to do with whether the Abis
transmission is in E1 or IP mode. The adjustment is as follows:
The downlink delay time increases by 1040ms, namely two-way delays for two satellites.

If the T3193 length of the timer is more than 520ms, the length is decreased by 520. If it
is not more than 520ms, the length is set to 0.

6 Engineering Guide
6.1 Application Scenario
When a BTS is located in a remote region, it is economical to provide a satellite link
between the BSC and the BTS, for example, a BTS in the desert area.
When communication needs to be resumed after a disaster, the satellite link can quickly
resume the communication between the BTS and the BSC. For example, the BTS within
a disaster area uses a satellite link for communication after an earthquake.
6.2 Feature Activation Procedure

The application scenario is a single BSC scenario, which means that Super site work
mode is set to Single BSC when both the active and standby links are connected to the
same BSC. If they are connected to different BSCs, this parameter needs to be set to
Double BSC.
6.3 Feature Validation Procedure
Test Item Abis interface over satellite test
Prerequisites 1. The OMM is healthy.
2. The BSC is healthy.
3. The BTS(E1 Abis) is healthy.
Steps 1. Set the Abis mode to satellite mode.
2. Initiate a voice call.
3. Disconnect the Abis link in a flash.
Expected Result The voice call is normal.
6.4 Feature Deactivation Procedure
In the configuration resource tree, select Modify Area>Managed Element>GSM
Logical Configuration>Site Information Configuration and double-click Site
Equipment. Set ABIS satellite access type to 0.See the following figure.
