Transcript of abilities as the youngest president in the history of ICSR, or so I’m … · juggle home, work...
1
Dear ICSR Family For the past 16 years, it has been a pleasure to be a part of ICSR, a melting pot of Indian Culture in the Tri State Area! In 2017, I humbly accept to lead this rapidly growing family into its 45th year. I am grateful to our past presidents especially to the outgoing 2016 president, Satish Shreedhar, for laying a solid foundation for me to tread on and to trust my abilities as the youngest president in the history of ICSR, or so I’m told.
The ICSR committee this year comprises of energetic, creative, technically sound, and intellectual individuals. Many of them have worked together as a team and contributed to the growth and success of this organization in the past years. It is certainly not easy to juggle home, work and community service and yet we are here once again with an exciting line up of events, securing sponsors and building rapport with community leaders. “What drives you?” people ask, “To channel so much time, energy and selfless commitment into this organization?” Everyone would have a different story, a different reason. I have mine.
When I was fresh off the boat from India way back in 2001with my husband and a 6 month old daughter in tow, I was excited but anxious for being uprooted from my cultural comfort zone in India. A phase that perhaps every immigrant experiences. My apprehensions were laid to rest in ICSR, I was assured that America will let me be a proud Indian and for that, she will always have my allegiance and affection. ICSR is where I nurtured some lifelong friendships. Every time I come home from an ICSR event; I willingly fade into this amorphous sense of belonging to the country that I was born in and to the one that I call home. . It is where we celebrate the effortlessly assimilative and inclusive nature of American culture. To be able to give back to the community that has enriched our lives in many ways is a humbling experience. This is what drives me to ICSR.
My goals for ICSR this year can be summarized into one word: Preservation. In line with this goal, we are working alongside a formal ICSR Youth Wing. The idea and purpose is to provide these 10-12th graders with a platform to actively contribute towards the organization while generating a stronger sense of belonging to ICSR and Indian culture in general. This will also serve as an opportunity to grow and develop as leaders, team workers, and collect community service hours. If we preserve our youth, we preserve the community. Another step to achieving the goal is the preservation of our popular programs. Please join us for our first spring social of the year in March, Vasant Utsav followed by the popular ColorFest Holi in April. Be prepared to be enthralled at the Annual cultural show in May! We bring back a popular event, the “Masala Cruise” in summer this year. Reservation for the cruise will be on first come first basis. More details will follow.
Finally, the most important step will be the preservation of funds. We will strive to make sure your membership and sponsorship payments are smartly used towards improving the quality of our existing programs and bringing in new ideas while working towards the longstanding dream of owning a permanent building that ICSR can call home. I seek your help in increasing our membership base and referring us to potential generous sponsors. Volunteer, become a member, donate or simply show up at events. I urge you to preserve your organization!
Fondly,
Charu Krishan

EDITOR’S NOTES Wishing Everyone a Very Happy and Healthy New Year!
This is our 1st newsletter for 2017, which includes a list of all the upcoming events planned for this
year. The entire committee is putting in a lot of time, effort, and thought to bring you these events. We
appreciate your suggestions on how to make our events better and welcome your support.
While we are in the process of revamping our website, please visit our social media pages listed in the
newsletter for updated information on events. Our newsletter and upcoming events will also be posted online.
All information including any changes to events will be updated on social media and released via email.
This past year’s Annual Diwali Dinner and Dance was held on November 5, 2016 and was very well attended.
It was held at the Crown Plaza, in Suffern. Several prominent people including elected officials from Rockland
County graced us with their presence. Friends and family enjoyed the event and appreciated the centrally
located venue.
Last year ICSR introduced a new program called “East Meets West”, by bringing the exotic and
graceful dance moves of East and aesthetically pleasing movements of West under one roof on October 15,
2016 at Rockland Community College, Suffern NY. The evening was graced by the presence of important
political figures of Rockland County, who have been a constant source of support system for the Indian
Community. The program was comprised of professionals from the East performing the classical dances such
as Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Bhangra and of course our very own Bollywood. Added to this was the
flavor of west in form of Jazz, Ballet, River dance, Modern dance, African dance and Gospel music thus
making it a multinational entertainment. ICSR also held India festival day. Everyone who attended the event
felt a festive atmosphere during this event, with several vendor stalls, nice food, dances etc. ICSR also held a
food drive through which we collected and donated more than 400 lbs of food and clothes to People-to People.
As we remind ourselves of how we got to where we are through such events, we hope to collect even more
food/clothes this year.
As we head into 2017, the new committee and Youth Wing, under the leadership of Charu Krishan, is
excited to bring you lots of fun and spectacular events. By popular demand, we are bringing back our first
event, Vasant Utsav! Also look out for information regarding the special Holi celebration, back by popular
demand!
Our Community Announcements section is for your use. Please send in any announcements or
achievements so that the entire community can take pride and share in your joy.
ICSR’s events would not be possible without its sponsors. ICSR would like to thank all of its
advertisers and it’s Sponsors for their financial support.

Culture and Art enhance the quality of our lives. This is particularly true to all Indians as we come from a land steeped in traditions and culture. As Indian Americans, we strive to keep this alive so that we can pass this to our children.
The India Cultural Society of Rockland has been passionately keeping the torch of Indian culture alive in the tri-state area since 1972. ICSR is instrumental in promoting Indian culture and heritage to local Indian and American community, through various events organized throughout the year.
The ICSR committee runs on the advice, time and energy provided by volunteers within the community. However nothing can be accomplished without your participation and monetary support. In these times of financial constraints, your support will go a long way in helping ICSR achieve its mission as well as expand its programs and services.

WanderlustIndia Series 1- Jammu & Kashmir
Starting in India’s north, Dal Lake is a popular visitor attraction in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The urban lake, which is the second largest in the state, is integral to tourism and recreation in Kashmir and is named the "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir".
Culture Synopsis Series 1: Did You Know? BINDI
A bindi (Hindi: , from Sanskrit: Bindu, meaning "point, drop, dot or small particle") is considered the point at which creation begins and may become unity along with many other interpretations depending on the region! Bindi in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism is associated with Ajna Chakra and Bindu is known as the third eye chakra. In metaphysics, Bindu is considered the dot or point at which creation begins. The point around which the mandala is created represents the universe. The bindi is said to retain energy and strengthen concentration. The area between the eyebrows (where the bindi is placed) is known as Bhrumadhya - where one focuses his/her sight so that it helps concentration. It is said to be the sixth chakra, Ajna, the seat of "concealed wisdom". From Vedic times, the bindi was created as a means to worship one's intellect. Therefore, it was used by both men and women. Bindi is worn by women of all religious dispositions. The traditional bindi still represents and preserves the symbolic significance that is integrated into Indian mythology in many parts of India.
We encourage the youth in your family to be a part of this Cultural Enrichment effort and submit their research topics to [email protected]. We would proudly post them on our social media pages.
