The characters of the play reflect the aspirations of the times, however they have all in many wayfailed to achieve their dreams and hopes for fulfillment. Resentments grow throughout the coursof the play escalating to its disastrous climax.

It's a funny play about failing to have fun. However, the party in question is someone else's partysomeone else's fun. The grass is always greener...

Characters (ages are merely a rough guide. Could be played by younger actors.)Beverly (early - mid 30s) - Laurence's wife. An unintentionally monstrous woman of innerdesolation. Beverly dominate/domineers the action of the play in her efforts to have the perfectmiddle-class social gathering.

Laurence (mid 30s) - Beverly's husband. Officious, pedantic and smug workaholic. Not as capabor well-cultured as he imagines he is or would like to be.

Angela (mid - late 20s) - Tony's wife. A nurse, befriended by Beverly. She finds it difficult to cometo the foreground in her social interactions with others.

Tony (late 20s) - Angela's husband. An primally agressive, curt man and an ex-footballer. A manfew words.

Susan (late 30s - mid 40s) - Separated. Abigail is her daughter, the unseen character of the title.Susan is a self-effacing woman of weakened confidence and self-esteem.

The play is set in 1977 outside of Essex. This setting/era will be maintained for the play andtherefore a middle-class London accent will be required.
