Dear Student,

Welcome to the July edition of the Abhyaas LawBulletin. Finally the ‘God Particle’ is found or so saythe scientists at CERN. This is a very significantdevelopment, something that can help us understandmore about how the universe evolved etc. It isimportant to note that there was a strong Indianconnection to all this so much so that the Boson isnamed after Indian Physicist Satyendra Nath Bose.

The Scoop Of The Month

‘God particle’ (Higgs Boson) found

Scientists at the world’s biggest atom smashingfacility claimed the discovery of a new subatomicparticle on July 4th. They found it to be“consistent” with the long-sought Higgs boson, popularly known as the “God particle” that helpsexplain what gives size and shape to all matter inthe universe.“We have now found the missing cornerstone ofparticle physics,” Rolf Heuer, Director of theEuropean Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN),told scientists amid cheers and standing ovation.“As a layman, I think we did it,” he said. “We’ve adiscovery. protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and thecreation of the universe, which many theoriesoccurred in a massive explosion known as the BigBang. Two independent teams at CERN said they had both“observed” a new subatomic particle, a boson. Dr.Heuer called it “most probably a Higgs boson, but wehave to find out what kind of Higgs boson it is.”Asked whether the find is a discovery, he answered:“As a layman, I think we have it. But as a scientist, Ihave to say, “’What do we have?’”The leaders of the two CERN teams, Joe Incandela, head of CMS with 2,100 scientists, and FabiolaGianotti, head of ATLAS with 3,000 scientists, eachpresented in complicated scientific terms what wasessentially extremely strong evidence of a newparticle.Dr. Incandela said it was too soon to say definitivelywhether what has been discovered is indeed the“standard model” Higgs that Scottish physicist PeterHiggs and others predicted in the 1960s. They did thatas part of a standard model theory of physics involvingan energy field where particles interact with a keyparticle, the Higgs boson. “The” Higgs or “a” Higgs thatwas the question. “It is consistent with a Higgs bosonas is needed for the standard model,” Dr. Heuer said.“We can only call it a Higgs boson, not the Higgsboson.”“It is an incredible thing that it has happened in mylifetime,” he said, calling it a huge achievement for theproton-smashing collider built in a 27-km tunnel. The stunning work elicited standing ovations andfrequent applause at a packed auditorium in CERN asDr. Gianotti and Dr. Incandela each took their turn. Dr.Incandela called it “a Higgs-like particle,” and said “weknow it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest bosonever found.” The phrase “God particle” was coined byNobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman but isused by laymen, not physicists, as an easier way toexplain how the subatomic universe works and gotstarted. Dr. Incandela said the last undiscovered pieceof the standard model could be a variant of the Higgsthat was predicted, or something else that entirelychanges the way scientists think of how matter isformed. “This boson is a very profound thing we’vefound,” he said. “We’re reaching into the fabric of theuniverse in a way we never have done before.”

By-poll candidate worth Rs 6,800 crore! “I wanted to be honest,” said G. Deepak Reddy, candidate in the June 12 by-election to theRayadurg constituency in Andhra Pradesh'sAnantapur district. . “So I stated the facts.” Thefacts are as startling as the honesty. The 39-year-old Telugu Desam Party candidate's electionaffidavit states his worth as being close to Rs.6,800 crore, all told. That is the highest figure everdeclared by a candidate in Indian elections —Parliament or Assembly — since the practice offiling affidavits with these details was enforced in2004. The figure is almost four-and-a-half timesthe next in the Top 10 list. That was Rs. 1,522.5crore declared by Srikantadatta NarasimharajaWadiyar, the former Maharaja of Mysore, in the2004 Lok Sabha election. Interestingly, five of thenine asset-toppers, after Mr. Deepak Reddy (seeTable), lost the elections they contested.
