ABOUT NATIONAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRIES•National Engineering Industries Limited (NEI) is the flagship company of the CK Birla Group, a conglomerate with a turnover of US$ 1.6 billion.

•NEI was founded in 1946 by the renowned industrialist, late Mr. B M Birla, under the name of ‘National Bearing Company Limited’.

• The company commenced manufacturing in 1950 with an annual production of 30,000 bearings in 19 sizes.

•The company is now manufacturing nearly 3.8 million bearings per month in over 500 different sizes ranging from 6 mm bore to 1300 mm outer diameter and has the capacity to manufacture bearings up to 2000 mm outer diameter.

•Over the past 60 years, NBC has grown to be the leading and fastest growing bearings brand in India.

•NBC has emerged as a leading exporter of bearings from India and its current export foot-print comprises of over 21 countries across 5 continents.

•Three production plants at Jaipur, Newai (both in Rajasthan), and Manesar (in Haryana), boast of world class manufacturing and process technology.

JOURNEY-A QUICK GLANCE

1946: National Bearing Company (NBC) was founded in Jaipur by late Mr. B.M. Birla with technical collaboration with Hoffman, UK.

1950: Ball bearing production started.

1958: Company renamed as National Engineering Industries Limited; NBC trademark retained.

1967: Tapered roller bearing division launched.

1975: Spherical roller bearing production began.

1981: Second plant inaugurated in Newai.

1982: Technical collaboration with Brenco, USA.

1985: Technical collaboration with NTN, Japan.

1995:ISO/TPM/TOM journey begins.

1996:TECHNICAL collaboration with Izumi, Japan.

2007: Third plant inaugurated in Manesar.

2008:NBC receives TPM excellence award.

2010: NBC receives Deming Award.

2012:NBC receives ACMA award for manufacturing and technology excellence .

Training at NBC JaipurSpread over a total area of 4,78,900 m2 and a covered area of 75,310 m2, Jaipur plant has state of the art manufacturing facilities and capable to manufacture all types of Ball and Roller Bearings of NEI product range.

I. Ball Bearings-

This Division is spread over a covered area of 14,694 Sq. Meters. Precision Ball Bearings from 6 mm bore to 75 mm bore diameter are manufactured on state of the art manufacturing facilities with in-process and post-process gauging in grinding and centrally air conditioned assembly lines with auto gauging and testing equipments

II. Tapered Roller Bearings-

This Division is spread over a covered area of 11,652 Sq. Meters. Precision Tapered Roller Bearings are manufactured in Inch and Metric series from 15.875mm bore to 95.25mm bore.

III. Railways Bearings-

This Division is spread over a covered area of 4,855 Sq. Meters.

IV. Roller Bearing in axle box-

With the production of Roller Bearings and Axle Boxes since 1952, the company has fully met the requirements of the Indian Railways (one of the largest systems of the world) by designing and developing Axle Boxes and bearings for fitment to Locomotives manufactured by Diesel Locomotive Works , Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, various wagon builders, the ICF broad and meter gauge coaches.

V. Spherical Roller Bearing-

The manufacturing of Spherical Roller Bearings was started in the year 1975-76 for fitment to broad gauge and meter gauge passenger coaches with designs, technology, machines and equipment procured from the collaborators.

VI. Cartridge Tapered Roller Bearing-

NEI is the only manufacturer in the country to indigenize these bearings to a high percentage under collaboration with the largest manufacturer of these bearings in the world. Production of these bearings commenced in the year 1984.

VII. Large Diameter Bearings-

The Large Diameter Bearings Division is spread over a covered area of 2,508 Sq. Meters.

NEI has the distinction of being one of the ten manufacturers of these bearings in the world, who can manufacture large diameter bearings up to 2000 mm diameter. The largest bearing manufactured by NEI for fitment to the Plate Mill of Rourkela Steel Plant was released in September 1985. This 4-Row Tapered Roller Bearing measures 1300mm dia and weigh 4.39 tons.

Production of these bearings started in 1975 and to date over 100 different types of special large diameter bearings have been manufactured and successfully used, saving considerable foreign exchange for the country.

BEARINGS-INTRODUCTION

A bearing is a machine part whose function is to support a moving element and to guide or

confine its motion, while preventing motion in the direction of applied load.

Bearings support another moving machine element. It permits a relative motion between

the contact surfaces of the members while carrying the load.

BALL BEARINGS

1. A ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing that uses balls to maintain the separation between the moving parts of the bearings - the inner and outer part of the bearings.

2. The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads.

3. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly (e.g., a hub or shaft).

4. As one of the bearing races rotates it causes the balls to rotate as well. Because the balls are rolling they have a much lower coefficient of friction than if two flat surfaces were sliding against each other.

5. Ball bearings are of simple design, durable in operation and easy to maintain.

BALL BEARING MANUFACTUREThere are four major parts in a standard ball bearing: balls, the inner race, the outer race and

the cage as shown in fig.
