The Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Australian Series 11
Welcome
Welcome to the Farr 40 Tasmanian State Title
Farr 40 Australia and Aberdeen Asset Management welcome all competitors and spectators to the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Tasmanian State Championships. This regatta is the second stop on the Australian circuit of the State Title Series, with the Queensland State Titles completed in October 2012.
We are excited to be able to showcase exceptional One Design racing against the backdrop of Hobart’s magnificent harbour and anticipate highly competitive, international standard racing among the crews.
We have five Tasmanian boats competing in the fleet this weekend and have been joined by four interstate boats who have travelled to be a part of this inaugural event. Previously Tasmanian owners have had to travel interstate to compete against Farr 40 fleets of any significant size. This year, with the introduction of the Australian Series, the intent of the Association is to provide quality race management and venues outside of Sydney and support the growth of local fleets.
Visiting crews in October’s Queensland event were thrown challenging conditions in a regatta punctuated by big winds and strong tides. The Tasmanian fleet will certainly benefit from intimate knowledge of the race course in Hobart, and conditions can also be unpredictable. It is certainly going to be a great event for our spectator flotilla.
The race management committee has designed a terrific programme for our competitors, and hope you will enjoy the racing and competition on the weekend of the 5-6 January. More importantly, the close racing and thrills and spills are underpinned by a great sense of camaraderie amongst the competitors. Our Farr 40 fleet love racing, and love racing each other and the spirit of competition is infectious.
We look forward to seeing you out there.

About Farr 40
The Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Australian Series 15
Farr 40 sailing is a contest between evenly matched 40-foot racing boats, helmed by their skilled and competitive amateur owners and guided by world-renowned tacticians. Boats in the Farr 40 class must meet strict One Design criteria.
One Design racing in Australia is widely celebrated through successful classes such as Etchells and dinghy Olympic classes including the Lasers and 470s. The Farr 40 class follows similar principles in racing and complies with specific One Design rules; boats have been built to a specific design and competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the skipper and crew.
Unique to the Farr 40 class is that the One Design rules are internationally governed, dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on number of professional crew members.
The Farr 40 fleet in Australia consists of 27 boats, 20 of which will compete in the 2012/13 Farr 40 Australia Series.
Crews in this Class consist of yachting luminaries such as Tom Slingsby, Malcolm Page, Mathew Belcher, Nathan Outteridge & Nina Curtis – all successful competitors in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The Tasmanian Farr 40 State Titles is the second of a three part State Title series, held in Queensland (27-28 October 2012), Tasmania (4-6 January 2013) and New South Wales (16-17 February 2013). The pinnacle event for the Australian Farr 40 Association is the National Titles, which will be held in Sydney on 22-24 February 2013.

The Forty crew came together in February 2012 for the Nationals regatta in Sydney. With minimal time together beforehand as a team, the crew set out to have a great time and compete well and that regatta exceeded all their expectations. Finishing last in Race 1 and a close 4th in Race 6, the crew is looking to improve this performance during the Tasmanian and NSW State Titles and Nationals in Sydney.
Tactician Will Ryan has pulled together an exceptional team of guys based on their skills, competitive nature and ability to work as a team. Most importantly, the crew love to sail together and have a good time on and off the water. As the new boys in the class they are hoping to mix it up with the professional teams and knock them off from time to time.

Named after the mighty Prince of Wales Hotel in Hobart’s historic Battery Point, POW has allowed a return to the sport for owners Michael, Richard and Craig, who first sailed against each other in Sabots over thirty years ago.
As keen yachtsmen in their youth, they can brag over beers to wins in Stonehaven Cups, Sharpie ‘Worlds’ and even the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. However, it is the close and enjoyable racing amongst Hobart’s Farr 40 fleet which is providing the sailing excitement nowadays.
The POW team is a happy mix of skill and glamour, with all crew focussed on competitive racing and an enjoyment of the social side of the sport. Rig and cooler settings take equal priority and are oft discussed!

Tilford Auto Group has been chartered for this regatta from Hughie Lewis by Andrew Hunn, who has put together a very talented crew, with extensive experience ranging from Volvo Race programmes, successful Farr 40 Worlds campaigns, to Australian Championship victories in several classes. The crew will enter the regatta with limited preparation, and will be very much the “wild card” in this experienced fleet.

Owned by Lloyd Clark and Andrew Hunn, the blue hulled Voodoo Chile is a Hobart-based Farr 40.
Regularly fighting at the front of the local fleet, the team has had recent wins in the 2011 Showdown and 2012 Crown Series regattas. A previous King of the Derwent winner, the team travelled to Sydney in 2009, 2010 and 2011 for events including the Rolex Trophy, the Australian Farr 40 Championships and the Farr 40 World Championships. Managing to win races and be competitive as part of the international fleet gave Clark and Hunn a small taste of success and they now look forward to competing in their home waters.
For this regatta the Voodoo Chile team has chartered an additional boat. With both crews having plenty of talent, they are evenly matched on paper. Clark will be taking the helm of Voodoo Chile and Hunn will be steering the chartered Tilford Motors. Both owners are looking for a good result.

War Games is a Tasmanian Corinthian crewed Farr 40 skippered by Wayne Banks-Smith who joined the class and the Tassie fleet of 5 yachts in 2008.
Wayne started sailing at the tender age of 48 on his own Adams Traditional 36 “Triple Effort” with a best performance of 4th on IMS Handicap in the 1990 Melbourne to Hobart Westcoaster. In 1994 he had built a Lyons 38 “Breakaway” which was raced in 4 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races with a best result of 11th overall on IMS Handicap. He purchased “War Games” in 2008 for the strict One-Design sailing against a competitive Hobart based Farr 40 Fleet.
Wayne secured his new tactician Steven Shield this year who started sailing as a young boy back in 1960. He sailed International Dragon Class winning the National and State Titles in 1982 and still holds the record as the youngest helm and crew to win the Nationals. He then moved into International Etchells Class with a best result of 5th in the Nationals. In later years he has continued sailing Division One yachts as a tactician and helm completing 10 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races.
