The Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Australian Series 11

Welcome

Welcome to the Farr 40 National Titles/John Calvert-Jones Trophy

Farr 40 Australia and Aberdeen Asset Management welcome all competitors and spectators to the Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 National Championships.

This is the pinnacle of our sailing season, with the crews having already competed in Brisbane, Tasmania and Sydney. This year is also the first time that crews will be competing for the John Calvert-Jones Trophy, named after Australia’s first world champion and the only Australian to win a world championship overseas. John will be watching the regatta aboard Kokomo II this weekend.

The Australian series scoreboard is very busy at the top, with Transfusion currently holding the lead, followed closely by Kokomo and Estate Master. Other boats to keep an eye out for include Voodoo Chile, Lambourdini and Edake (who won the Corinthian award in last week’s NSW State Titles), as all showed good speed last weekend. POW, the new entry from Tasmania, is a genuine unknown and could be a dark horse.

We are excited to be able to showcase exceptional One Design racing against the backdrop of Sydney’s magnificent harbour and anticipate highly competitive, international-standard racing among the crews.

We have seven Sydney boats competing in the fleet this weekend and these have been joined by three interstate crews who have travelled to be a part of this event. This fleet of ten boats is largest to have participated in many years, which will lead to a wonderful spectacle on Sydney Harbour.

All crews have been out on the water honing their skills for the unpredictability of racing in the congested Sydney Harbour, with crews having to deal with the many ferries and other race and spectator craft.

We look forward to you joining us for a wonderful weekend of sailing.

About Farr 40

The Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Australian Series 15

Farr 40 sailing is a contest between evenly matched 40-foot racing boats, helmed by their skilled and competitive amateur owners and guided by world-renowned tacticians. Boats in the Farr 40 class must meet strict One Design criteria.

One Design racing in Australia is widely celebrated through successful classes such as Etchells and dinghy Olympic classes including the Lasers and 470s. The Farr 40 class follows similar principles in racing and complies with specific One Design rules; boats have been built to a specific design and competing boats in the class are not permitted to make amendments to the design. Any competitive advantage must be derived by the skill of the skipper and crew.

Unique to the Farr 40 class is that the One Design rules are internationally governed, dictate an owner driver rule and impose limitations on number of professional crew members.

The Farr 40 fleet in Australia consists of 27 boats, 20 of which will compete in the 2012/13 Farr 40 Australia Series.

Crews in this Class consist of yachting luminaries such as Tom Slingsby, Malcolm Page, Mathew Belcher, Nathan Outteridge & Nina Curtis – all successful competitors in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The National Title, being held this weekend in Sydney, is the pinnacle event for the Australian Farr 40 Association. It follows the three previous State titles, held in Queensland (27-28 October 2012), Tasmania (4-6 January 2013) and New South Wales (16-17 February 2013).

Edake Racing is looking forward to the upcoming National Title. After finishing 3rd in the CYCA Trophy Series the team is fully aware that there will be even stiffer competition at these regattas. Some core team members remain from the Worlds in 2011 but there have been some exciting additions. These include Evan Walker, who returned last year from coaching the Finnish girls’ match racing squad to a very credible 3rd in the Olympics. Other team additions include Don McPhee, Tim Lake, Jaidan Stevens, Nicki Hodgson and Dan Nixon. The team will be competing in the Corinthian division and is keen to regain the Australian Corinthian title which it won at last weekends NSW Title.

Enigma is a Sydney based Farr40 OD jointly owned and campaigned by David Gotze and Michael Cranitch. Although the two owners are based in different states, Enigma is constantly campaigned in both One Design and handicap regattas. David is focusing on the One Design campaigns and, after a successful start to the season with a solid performance taking out the Forgacs Newcastle regatta, he’s looking forward to the competition in Sydney. David’s team is ably led by Steve McConaghy (Macca) on Tactics, Scott Hinton (Scooter) trimming and supported by experienced Farr 40 sailors from Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania. The team is looking forward to a solid regatta while enjoying the usual hospitality and good sailing conditions of Sydney.

Estate Master is campaigned by the husband and wife team of Lisa and Martin Hill with son-in-law and 3 times Olympian Michael Blackburn as tactician. It is a family affair with Michael’s wife Sarah Hill also on board backing up her mum, Lisa in the Pit position. Michael, a Laser world champion and Sydney Bronze medallist in the Laser Class, has recently been made AIS joint coach of the Year, having coached Tom Slingsby to Gold in the London Olympics. Estate Master is a seasoned global Farr 40 competitor with 4 World Championship to her credit with results 15, 8, 5 & 4. The yacht’s other international highlights include 1st in 2010 Pre Worlds and 1st in 2011 Sydney International Regatta. Estate Master crew is also joined by Gordon McGuire on main who was sailing master on the yacht when it scored 2nd in Newport Farr 40 World championships in 2007.

12 The Aberdeen Asset Management Farr 40 Australian Series

The Forty crew came together in February 2012 for the Nationals regatta in Sydney. With minimal time together beforehand as a team, the crew set out to have a great time and compete well and that regatta exceeded all our expectations. Finishing last in Race 1 and a close 4th in Race 6, and then 4th over all in Tasmania the crew are looking forward to the National Titles. Despite not sailing well in the NSW State titles “Team Forty” is looking to bounce back this weekend.

This week we welcome back brother and sister team Will and Sasha Ryan from their Olympic 470 duties and together with new addition Stacy Jackson the whole crew are excited about racing the best in Australia this weekend.

Tactician Ryan has pulled together an exceptional team of guys based on their skills, competitive nature and ability to work as a team. Most importantly, the crew love to sail together and have a good time on and off the water. As the new boys in the class we hope to mix it up with the professional teams and knock them off from time to time.

6024IMpi is a Sydney based Farr 40 owned by real estate Principal Ivan Resnekov.

Ivan is relatively new to One Design racing, although he gained a great deal of experience racing IMpi in the Farr 40 Worlds in Sydney. The IMpi crew came together in December 2012 with the goal (in regard to results) of being ‘that annoying boat’ in the fleet that sometimes pulls one out of the bag. Having fun and post race refreshments are the highest priorities.

Recent Olympic Coach and general pest, Craig ‘Fez’ Ferris is calling tactics, however is often ignored by his band of merry men. Beijing Olympian and multiple world champion Ben Austin is on main and the biggest pit person in the history of Farr 40s is Andrew Cribb.

Trimmers Paul Schulz and James Ward will try and carry the crew with Rory Cox and Stewart Wood on bow and mast respectively.

A newcomer to yachts, Floater Bryan McKay who won the 420 Worlds in 1981, will compete in his first ever yacht regatta in this series.

A fun boat with a good bunch of guys.

For over a decade class stalwart Lang Walker has done battle across the globe in the Farr 40 class, winning 2 Australian Championships and with nail-bitingly close 2nds in North American, European and European overall championships along the way.

From the front of the boat to the back, the team bristles with experience, with no less than 7 World Championships, 5 Sydney to Hobart and and 4 times as many national titles between the crew.

Up front is John Flannery, Peter Salt and Ben Barzach, Jane Clark running the pit, Bruce Clark, locking up the middle with Stu Pollard and Tim Burnell. Add main trimmer Richie Allanson and the talents of Olympian and Farr 40 guru Adrian Stead, and Walker has a team ready to step up on and off the water.

For this event Page will be taking an overview role from the coach boat before he leads the assault on the US circuit and this year’s World Championships in Newport Rhode Island.

After racing, with Walker leading the way, it would be hard to beat this team on the social scene.

Lambourdini is a Brisbane-based class Farr 40 owned by Brisbane signwriter Howard Lambourne. He purchased the boat late in 2009 predominantly for Wednesday racing with his lifelong friends and local racing on weekends with his own children and their friends. The first 2 years the boat had a very good race record locally in Brisbane and in 2012 son David was able to put a team together to have the first hitout with the Sydney fleet in the 2012 nationals.

Since then the boat has competed in the Queensland states, Rolex series and have now prepared the boat for the 2013 NSW states and Nationals with the boat being delivered a week in advance. Although Howard does not sail on board in the one design racing, he is a hands on shore manager with son David sailing the boat with his son Sam for the first time, making it a 3 generation family affair. The crew is made up of Scott Miller, Mike O’Brien and Rob Bridge, all of whom have been family friends for almost 40 years, along with Andrew Clauson a son of one of the Wednesday crew and backed up by a selection of Sydney based crew.

POW

Named after the mighty Prince of Wales Hotel in Hobart’s historic Battery Point, POW has allowed a return to the sport for owners Michael, Richard and Craig, who first sailed against each other in Sabots over thirty years ago.

As keen yachtsmen in their youth, they can brag over beers of wins in Stonehaven Cups, Sharpie ‘Worlds’ and even the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. However, it is the close and enjoyable racing amongst Hobart’s Farr 40 fleet which is providing the sailing excitement nowadays.

The POW team is a happy mix of skill and glamour, with all crew focussed on competitive racing and an enjoyment of the social side of the sport. Rig and cooler settings take equal priority and are oft discussed!

In September 2012 the Transfusion crew defended their World Championships in Chicago with a final result on the podium, seeing the local Chicago team Flash Gordon take out the championship with consistency and a little local knowledge. Our tactician for the Worlds Nathan Outteridge is now contracted to the Artemis Americas Cup team which is a tremendous recognition of his huge talent across a variety of super quick craft. The core of the Transfusion team consists of Olympic and America’s Cup veteran Bob Wilmot, talented Trimmer Sam Williams, Crewman of the year 2011 Pete Sheldrick and hugely talented bowman Mitch White. For the Sydney States and Nationals we welcome back Mike Leigh as tactician, who was Canada’s Olympic representative in the 470’s and before that a top 10 in the world Laser sailor. In the Strategy role is Tom Burton, Laser hot shot and training Partner of Tom Slingsby. Will McKenzie is fresh from this year’s Monsoon cup and a regular mast man on the Transfusion team. Lieutenant Commander Cam Hooper joins the team on Brace and Ryan Wilmot makes his debut joining his father Bob to show him a thing or two following his defeat of his dad in the Australian Titles for the 13 foot skiff championships held in Sydney in January.

Owned by Lloyd Clark and Andrew Hunn, the blue hulled Voodoo Chile is a Hobart-based Farr 40 (and was originally Kokomo prior to being purchased) To keep the Voodoo Chile spirit for this regatta we have chartered another later model Kokomo.

Regularly fighting at the front of the local fleet, the team has had recent wins in the 2011 Showdown and 2012 Crown Series regattas. The current King of the Derwent winner, the team has previously travelled to Sydney in 2009, 2010 and 2011 for events including the Rolex Trophy, the Australian Farr 40 Championships and the Farr 40 World Championships. After recording runner up by count back in this year’s Tasmanian State Championship to Transfusion, Clark and Hunn now look forward to competing on Sydney harbour against the best in the country.
