The Beauty of the World

Aberdeen [ˌabəˈdiːn] is a third-largest city in

Scotland. It is situated in the north-east coast of the

country.

Aberdeen is also known as the Granite City, the Grey City and the Siver

City with the Golden Sands.

During the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries Aberdeen’s buildings

incorporated locally quarried grey granite, which can sparkle like

silver due to the high mica contents.

The area of Aberdeen City and Shire is often called as “Castle Country”,

because it is home to over 300 castles ranging from striking cliff-top

ruins to grand fortresses and sumptuous royal residences. Some of

the best known castles are Crathes Castle, Haddo House, Balmoral

Castle and Dunnottar Castle.

Balmoral Castle has been one of the residences of the British Royal

Family since 1852, when it was purchased by Queen Victoria and

Prince Albert.

The castle is an example of Scots Baronial architecture and is classified

by Historic Scotland as a category “A” listed building.

The grounds, gardens and exhibitions are closed to the public during

August, September and October when the Royal Family are in the

residence.

One of the most impressive

ones is Aberdeen Maritime

Museum.

It tells the story of the city’s long

relationship with the sea.You

can admire the unique

collection covering

shipbuilding, fast sailing ships,

fishing and port history.

It is also the only place in the UK where you can see displays on the

North Sea oil and gas industry.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum offers visitors a spectacular viewpoint over

the busy harbour. The complex is open six days a week with a busy

programme of special exhibitions and events throughout the year.

The museum's unique atmosphere and prison cells provide a striking visitor experience and a real insight into imprisonment and the treatment of prisoners and rebel Jacobites in times gone by.

The Tolbooth Museum is one of Aberdeen's

oldest buildings and one of the best-preserved 17th century prisons in Scotland.

It features displays on local history and the development of crime and punishment through the centuries.

Aberdeen Art Gallery is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

Designed by the local architect Alexander Marshall MacKenzie, it was opened in 1885 and is the

largest public gallery in the North of Scotland. It attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year.

Aberdeen Art Gallery houses one of the most important art collections in the country ranging

from the 18th century portraits by Raeburn, Hogarth to the powerful 20th century works by Paul

Nash, Stanley Spencer and Francis Bacon. The paintings also include excellent examples by

French Impressionists and Post Impressionists Monet, Renoir and the others.

Provost Skene's House

Dating from 1545, Provost Skene's House

shows how people lived in the 17th, 18th

and early 19th centuries.

The house is named after one of

Aberdeen's most famous residents, Lord

Provost George Skene, who is thought

to have commissioned the carved

plaster ceilings. Visitors can admire an

unusual series of religious paintings in

the Painted Gallery and enjoy changing

displays of dress in the Costume

Gallery.

St. Machar’s Cathedral

St Machar's Cathedral is located to the north of Aberdeen city centre. It is a building of the

12th century with unique heraldic ceiling and fortified west front. This ancient site

continues to be a living place of worship.

The Old Royal StationYou can see the historic railways and stations in

Aberdeen City and Shire, which used to carry Royal monarchs around the region. You can visit the station once used by the Royal Family during their summer visits to Balmoral Castle or step onboard and take a 20-minute journey on a steam and diesel heritage railway.
