Volleyball Buddies >>> Where are they now? >>>

Daniel Julson graduated from Richland #44 in 2011. After graduation Daniel did not have any idea what he wanted to study, but, he eventually settled on Accounting and registered at

Jamestown College. Two years later Daniel switched majors to Ag Economics and transferred to NDSU while continuing to take Accounting courses to accelerate his graduation. After completing an internship at Farm Credit Services of Mandan in the summer of 2015, Daniel went on to graduate from NDSU in December of 2015. He passed his CPA exam in January 2016. Daniel is now a fully li-censed CPA and working as an accountant with his mom at her business, Nadine Julson, LLC in Wahpeton, ND.

Daniel is engaged to Sena Skefte, a 2012 Richland #44 alumnus. They are busy planning for a wedding this summer.

When asked what he remembers most at Richland #44, Daniel commented that his favorite memories

were talking to Mr. Ulven on the cor-ner between the two wings of the school, sneaking out of study hall to play pranks on Gary (who was the custodian at that time), and of course, playing sports.

Senior Picture 2011

After graduation in 2010, my plan was to attend NDSU to obtain an Ag Finance degree. Like many college students, I changed my ma-jor several times which resulted in me going to NDSU for 5 years. Throughout college, I had the op-portunity to study abroad in Europe and was able to vaca-tion around the United States. In 2015, I graduated from NDSU with a Business Administration degree. Looking to the future, I saw myself living in Fargo or Minneap-olis, married and raising a family. But as time went on, I found my vision for the future changed. For the last year, I have been serving as a missionary in Kona, Hawaii and Papua New Guinea sharing the Gospel. I recently re-turned to North Dakota and am planning on continuing with mission work in the near future. Exploring creation here on Earth has been amazing and I recommend it to any student. There are so many beautiful places and peo-ple out in the world; I really encourage students to go out and enjoy experiencing different cultures because it has completely changed my perspective on life. My favorite memory from high school is working at the front desk my senior year with Lauren Tengesdal (Casperson) during study hall. A year ago, I was at the high school for my mom’s (Evonne Viland) spring concert and was amazed by how much the school has changed. It would have been nice to have a second gym while I was in high school!

Dollars for Scholars—Daddy/Daughter Dance >>>

Cub Scouts - Pack 357 Arrow of Light >>> Cub Scout Pack 357 recently held their Arrow of Light, crossover meeting. At this meeting, scouts crossed over and advanced to their new den. Tigers became Wolves, Wolves became Bears, Bears became Webelos I, and We-belos I advance to Webelos II. The big event of the evening was our Webelo II, Alex Martel, receiving his Ar-

row of Light. He is now officially a Boy Scout!

Richland #44 Dollars for Scholars hosted their second annual Daddy/Daughter Dance on April 8. Thank you to all the dads, grandpas, and brothers who accompanied the girls to the dance. Thank you to the com-munity for supporting our Dollars for Scholars chapter at this event and helping us raise over $1,500 for scholarships! A special thank you to Pastor Dan Forsberg for being our emcee for the evening. Also thank you to our sponsors Northland Truss Systems, Kummer Construction, Red River Communications, RRVW Railroad, Nadine Julson LLC, JAV Construction, and Cherry Berry. Our committee has already started planning for the 2017 Daddy/Daughter Dance as we look forward to continuing this annual event.

Music Parents is looking for new and returning members! If your child is in music in any capacity at Richland #44, from 5th grade band to senior high choir, you are invited to join Music Parents. Currently, we are in need of parents willing to help with the cal-endar fundraiser. This is our main fundraiser each year. As stu-dents graduate out, our parent base seems to be decreasing as well and would love for you to join us! If interested in helping or be-

coming a member of Music Parents, contact Mr. Aamold for more information [email protected] .

Lucky Leaf 4H News >>>

As the school year comes to an end, we wanted to keep you updated on summer office hours. Elementary Office: May 26-June 8 & August 10 - August 23 9am-3pm June 9 - August 9 CLOSED High School Office/District Office: Open all summer Monday-Friday 9am-3pm

This time of year is very busy for our 4H members. In addition to preparing for Achievement Days and State Fair, there are also a few opportunities for the kids to compete at. Most recently, some of our members competed at the county Project Expo and Consumer Choices competition. These events were held at the Bagg Farm near Mooreton, ND. While it was a first year competing for many, the Lucky Leaf 4H club came out with many top awards!

Project Expo provides youth with an experience in planning, preparing and displaying an article or an educational exhibit. It is an opportunity for self-expression both verbally and visually. Project Expo also provides the opportuni-ty to share with others what has been learned in the specific project. Each 4Her who competes, creates and designs a card table size display on their project. Judges ask questions to get an idea of knowledge on the project and give a composite

score based on the interview displayed project. 4H members from all of Richland County are invited to compete. Congratulations to Johnny Kuruc for receiving the grand champion and to Alex Martel for receiving reserve champion. Also, congratu-lations to blue ribbon recipients from Lucky Leaf 4H: Lilly Miranowski, Morgan Sundstrom, Inger Holdman, Otto Dockter, Wade Gorder, Adam Skoog, Gina Quamme, Popi Miranowski, and Addie Christensen.

Consumer Choices teaches you how to make decisions based on information that you have learned and studied and on facts that you have collected. It can also help you learn to defend your decisions. The 4-H Consumer Choices Contest can help you practice making decisions by matching your knowledge, skills and abilities against those of others. You will learn to rank articles or products over others based on stand-ards and quality. Congratulations to all the Lucky Leaf 4H members who competed! In the pre-teen division, Alex Martel earned reserve champion and Keagan Neppl came home with a blue rosette. In the beginner division Adam Skoog placed grand champi-on, Hans Weinmann reserve champion, and Cora Hermunslie took home the blue ro-

sette. Others who competed and earned a blue ribbon were Lilly Miranowski, Otto Dockter, Preston Schmitt, Inger Holdman, Wade Gorder, Ethan Skoog, Addie Chris-tenson, William Gorder, Ella Wienmann, Morgan Sundstrom, Popi Miranowski, and Gina Quamme.

The County clothing review was also held that day. Gina Quamme entered in Decorate your Duds and Buy and Show categories and took home grand champion in both. We strongly encourage our members to compete in all county competitions. As you can see in the pictures above, the Lucky Leaf 4H club monopolized all the compe-titions being the majority of participants.

The next competition on our schedule is 4H Communications Arts on May 26 at the Bagg Farm. This is very similar to Speech competition in high school, but encourages all ages to compete. In addition to the basic speech categories of Interpretive and Dramatic Readings, other categories include website design, video production, demonstration, commercial, broadcasting, and short take. We are excited to have a couple of our members par-ticipating in this. Be sure to watch for more information in our next article on the outcome.

Elementary Volleyball >>> The elementary volleyball players started practice on March 7 and played their last game on April 28. Last year was Richland’s first year of competition and we had a combined 5th/6th grade team, but this year we had enough players for two separate teams. The fourth grade girls were also invited to come to practices this year so they could jumpstart their skills for next season. Both the fifth and sixth grade teams had very successful seasons! The sixth graders continued their winning ways from last year and once again ended their season undefeated. They had a perfect 9-0 record! The fifth grade team also played well all season and ended with an impressive 7-1 overall record. All the girls worked hard throughout the seven week season. Both teams had excellent serving skills and the sixth graders did a fantastic job setting and hitting at the net. The future of Richland volleyball is definitely bright! A special “thank you” goes out to Abby Myers, Mikayla Clark, and Lois Vorachek who vol-unteered their time to help coach at practices. -- Coach Julie Heyen 4th grade players: Alison H, Isabel V, Ally H, Ella W, Popi M, Jessa P 5th grade players: Megan T, Blake M, Kennedi W, Shandi C, Grace M, Carli N, Morgan S, Lauryn W 6th grade players: Emma H, Megan L, Megan R, Keagan N, Madison J, Dacey W

Child Development Class >>> The child development recently studied a chapter on preschool aged children. To aid in this study the class hosted a “Play School” for four and five year olds in the area. They met three times with the children and planned activities, games, and snacks for each day.

Blast from the past>>>

If you have an old picture you would like to share from past days at Richland #44, we would love to see them. Pictures can be submitted to [email protected]

Please include a little information to go along with the picture. Pictures will be featured in upcoming issues of the Colt Connection newsletter.

Look very close! Do you recognize this person? This is non other than our very own custodian Ron Pfeiff. This Blast from the Past picture was found while researching for another article. Ron was the custodian at Richland #44 from 1980-1990. Dur-ing that time he also drove bus for a few years. Ron returned to Richland #44 in the fall of 2013.
