MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and AWR 2019 are pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2019 MedStar Georgetown Lifetime Achievement Award in abdominal wall reconstruction is Dr. Michael J. Rosen from the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

A national leader in the field, Dr. Michael J. Rosen currently is a Professor of Surgery at Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. He is also the Director of the Cleveland Clinic Comprehensive Hernia Center.

Dr. Rosen completed his surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and his research fellowship was completed in minimally invasive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In addition, he performed a clinical fellowship at the Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his medical training at the University of Southern California and conducted research at Cleveland Clinic during his residency.

Dr. Rosen has been awarded 22 funded research grants, and has published over 180 peer reviewed papers in minimally invasive surgery and complex

abdominal wall reconstruction. He has authored over 50 chapters in various surgical textbooks. He also has edited 5 surgical textbooks, including the Atlas of Abdominal Wall Reconstruction. In addition, he is the co-founder and Medical Director of the Americas Hernia Society Quality Collaborative.

Serving as the Director of the CCF Hernia Center, his vision and strategic plan for his team is focused on providing the best care possible for patients with all types of hernias. While at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Rosen has developed several surgical techniques that are executed at the clinic, including newer minimally invasive approaches, novel ways to approach complex abdominal wall reconstructions to avoid problems with raising skin flaps, and resections with complex and challenging defects. When Dr. Rosen became involved with hernia repair

10 years ago, he made it his goal to execute a scientific and translational method to improving patient outcomes and identifying better surgical materials.

The 2012 award recipient, Dr. Guy Voeller reflected, “Dr. Rosen has dedicated his career to evaluating, researching and improving all aspects of abdominal wall reconstruction. Dr. Rosen’s endeavors continue to this day and I cannot think of anyone more deserving to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction than Dr. Michael J. Rosen.”

COURSE DESCRIPTION

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s 11th Annual Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR) Conference is a comprehensive two-day symposium that provides an in-depth understanding of the complexity of AWR. The purpose of this highly interactive meeting is to offer an evidence-based discussion on all aspects of AWR through didactic lectures with video education and case presentations to address the growing rate of hernia repairs and updates in technology and procedures. Currently, there are approximately 350,000 ventral hernia repairs performed annually in the United States and the patient population continues to be increasingly complex with significant co-morbidities. Thus, the overall complication rate is high including surgical site morbidity and recurrence. The financial burden to the healthcare system is substantial.

This conference will address the high overall complication rate as well as the association of ventral hernia repair as the cause of the second highest postoperative readmission rate. The course is comprised of internationally renowned faculty that are a diverse group of experts chosen from the disciplines of general and plastic surgery, based upon their ongoing contributions to the field of abdominal wall reconstruction. The individual sessions will focus on patient optimization, selection of surgical approach and reinforcement material for different patient populations, and management of complications.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Identify why preoperative preparation is necessary for

optimizing patient outcomes

• Identify the indications for biologic, synthetic, bioabsorbable mesh

• Reduce the incidence of surgical site occurrences

• Utilize advanced abdominal wall reconstruction techniques to improve patient outcomes

• Utilize advanced laparoscopic techniques for optimal patient outcomes

• Implement the robotic platform for hernia repair

• Recognize the value of plastic surgery techniques for advanced abdominal wall reconstruction

• Manage entero-cutaneous fistulas in the setting of a hernia

• Implement appropriate treatment options including a stages approach for infected abdominal wall mesh

• Recognize the optimal management of skin and soft tissue during hernia repair

• Implement enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) after hernia repair

• Recognize the value of Botox in large hernia defects

• Evaluate and manage the common complications after component separation procedure

• Implement surgical approach for unique patient populations (oncology, transplant, child bearing age)

• Implement data tracking through the AHSQC database management

TARGET AUDIENCE

This conference is designed to be a multidisciplinary program and is intended for a wide range of medical practitioners who are interested in the latest information regarding the treatment of abdominal wall reconstruction. The program is purposely targeted towards general, plastic and trauma surgeons, wound care specialists, residents, fellows, physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, nurses, and other allied health professionals interested in abdominal wall reconstruction.
