Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures.  These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic.  The recognition that the collective behavior of the whole system cannot be simply inferred from an understanding of the behavior of the individual components has led to the development of numerous sophisticated new computational and modeling tools with applications to a wide range of scientific, engineering, and societal phenomena. Computational Complexity: Theory, Techniques and Applications presents a detailed and integrated view of the theoretical basis, computational methods, and state-of-the-art approaches to investigating and modeling of inherently difficult problems whose solution requires extensive resources approaching the practical limits of present-day computer systems.  This comprehensive and authoritative reference examines key components of computational complexity, including cellular automata, graph theory, data mining, granular computing, soft computing, wavelets, and more.

Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology and PsychiatryE. L. Grigorenko, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA (Ed.)

Features 7 Explores the most critical issues in the field of forensic work with

juveniles in the U.S7 Focuses on the subspecialties of forensic psychiatry and psychology,

applying leading-edge research and clinical knowledge to challenging legal issues

7 Draws key knowledge from a broad-base of researchers and professionals whose expertise is influencing the field

7 Captures different functional aspects of the U.S. juvenile justice system and associated services and fields of practice

Juvenile justice centers have a long tradition as an unfortunate stop for young offenders who need mental health care. Reports estimate that as many as 70% of the youth in detention centers meet criteria for mental health disorders. As juvenile justice systems once again turn their focus from confinement to rehabilitation, mental health providers have major opportunities to inform and improve both practice and policy. The Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology and Psychiatry explores these opportunities by emphasizing a developmental perspective, multifaceted assessment, and evidence-based practice in working with juvenile offenders. This comprehensive volume provides insights at virtually every intersection of mental health practice and juvenile justice, covering areas as wide-ranging as special populations, sentencing issues, educational and pharmacological interventions, family involvement, ethical issues, staff training concerns, and emerging challenges. Together, its chapters contain guidelines not only for changing the culture of detention but also preventing detention facilities from being the venue of choice in placing troubled youth. Key issues addressed in the Handbook include: Developmental risks for delinquency.Race and sex disparities in juvenile justice processing.Establishing standards of practice in juvenile forensic mental health assessment.Serving dually diagnosed youth in the juvenile justice system.PTSD among court-involved youth.Female juvenile offenders.Juvenile sex offenders. The Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology and Psychiatry is an essential reference for researchers, professors, allied clinicians and professionals, and policy makers across multiple fields, including child and school psychology, child and adolescent psychiatry, developmental psychology, criminology, juvenile justice, forensic psychology, neuropsychology, social work, and education.

Handbook of Quantifiers in Natural LanguageE. L. Keenan, D. Paperno, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, USA (Eds)

Features 7 Enables cross-language research based on individual studies that each

follow the same structure7 Offers a unique breadth and diversity by covering 20 different languages

from 15 language families7 Presents reliable and accessible data on quantifiers written by native

speaker linguists

Covering a strikingly diverse range of languages from 12 linguistic families, this handbook is based on responses to a questionnaire constructed by the editors. Focusing on the formation, distribution and semantic interpretation of quantificational expressions, the book explores 17 languages including German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, Malagasy, Hebrew, Pima, Basque, and more. The language data sets enable detailed crosslinguistic comparison of numerous features. These include semantic classes of quantifiers (generalized existential, generalized universal, proportional, partitive), syntactically complex quantifiers (intensive modification, Boolean compounding, exception phrases) and several others such as quantifier scope ambiguities, quantifier float, and binary quantifiers. Its theory-independent content extends earlier work by Matthewson (2008) and Bach et al. (1995), making this handbook suitable for linguists, semanticians, philosophers of language and logicians alike.

Features 7 Presents a rich set of data for atomic physics, chemistry, material science,

astrophysics7 Gives an overview of selected calculational methods for atomic physics7 Contains extensive descriptions of physical processes presented with rich

illustrations7 Provides a basis for planning experiments in atomic and molecular

physics

The aim of this book is to present highly accurate and extensive theoretical Atomic data and to give a survey of selected calculational methods for atomic physics, used to obtain these data. The book presents the results of calculations of cross sections and probabilities of a broad variety of atomic processes with participation of photons and electrons, namely on photoabsorption, electron scattering and accompanying effects. Included are data for photoabsorption and electron scattering cross-sections and probabilities of vacancy decay formed for a large number of atoms and ions. Attention is also given to photoionization and vacancy decay in endohedrals and to positron-atom scattering. The book is richly illustrated. The methods used are one-electron Hartree-Fock and the technique of Feynman diagrams that permits to include many-electron correlations. This is done in the frames of the Random Phase approximation with exchange and the many-body perturbation theory. Newly obtained and previously collected atomic data are presented. The atomic data are useful for investigating the electronic structure and physical processes in solids and liquids, molecules and clusters, astronomical objects, solar and planet atmospheres and atomic nucleus. Deep understanding of chemical reactions and processes is reached by deep and accurate knowledge of atomic structure and processes with participation of atoms. This book is useful for theorists performing research in different domains of contemporary physics, chemistry and biology, technologists working on production of new materials and for experimentalists performing research in the field of photon and electron interaction with atoms, molecules, solid bodies and liquids.

Economic and Legal Concepts and Theories and the Economic Analysis of the U.S. and E.U. Law or Horizontal and Conglomerate Mergers, Vertical Mergers and their Sugorrates, and Joint VenturesVolume IR. Markovits, University of Texas, Austin, TX, USA

Features 7 Explains why market definitions are inherently arbitrary, develops non-

market-oriented approaches to assessing the monopolizing character and competitive impact of mergers, joint ventures, and long-term requirements contracts, and criticizes the market-oriented approaches to these issues proposed by academics and used by U.S. and E.U. courts and antitrust-enforcement agencies

7 Defines "oligopolistic" and "predatory" conduct, analyzes the determinants of the profitability of all variants of such conduct, examines the evidence that can and cannot be used to prove that defendants have engaged in them, and criticizes the contrary tests for predation and illegal oligopolistic conduct that academics and U.S. and E.U. courts and enforcement-agencies have proposed/used

7 Delineates the legitimate functions of vertical integration, (B) examines the ability of various horizontal pricing techniques, resale price maintenance, and vertical territorial restraints and customer-allocation clauses, other sorts of contractual provisions and sales policies that are designed to reduce independent retailers to promote a producer's product, and long-term full-requirements contracts can perform these functions, (C) examines the legal implications of the foregoing analyses under both U.S. and E.U. antitrust law, and (D) criticizes the contrary analyses and conclusions of scholars and U.S. and E.U. courts and antitrust-enforcement agencies

7 Provides a comprehensive account and comparison of U.S. antitrust law and E.U. competition law both as written and as applied (which points out the purely legal as well as the legal/economic errors that U.S. and E.U. authorities have made when interpreting and applying respectively the U.S. statutes and the E.U. treaty), and examines whether historically and contemporaneously these errors make U.S. and E.U.

This book (1) delineates operational definitions of (A) the key concepts in the U.S.‘/E.U.‘s respective tests of antitrust illegality and (B) such other antitrust-law-related economic concepts as „oligopolistic“ and „predatory“ conduct, (2) analyzes the profitability of oligopolistic and predatory conduct and the evidence that can and cannot establish that they have been practiced, (3) explains why market definitions are inherently arbitrary and criticizes the market-oriented approaches that U.S. and E.U. antitrust-enforcement officials have used to predict the competitive impact of horizontal mergers and the possible foreclosing effects of long-term requirements contracts, (4) explains the various functions that vertical integration can perform and the ability of various types of pricing techniques, vertical contractual restraints, and sales policies to perform those functions, (5) describes U.S. antitrust law and E.U. competition law as written, (6) summarizes and criticizes the ways in which the U.S./E.U. authorities have interpreted and applied the U.S./E.U. antitrust statutes/treaty, and (7) compares U.S. and E.U. antitrust law both as written and as applied.

Handbook of Healthcare System SchedulingR. Hall, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA (Ed.)

Features 7 Focuses on improving delivery of services7 Strives to reduce cost of care while increasing patient access7 Presents recent developments, key methods in published literature,

actual applications, and future directions

This edited volume captures and communicates the best thinking on how to improve healthcare by improving the delivery of services -- providing care when and where it is needed most -- through application of state-of-the-art scheduling systems.  Over 12 chapters, the authors cover aspects of setting appointments, allocating healthcare resources, and planning to ensure that capacity matches needs for care. A central theme of the book is increasing healthcare efficiency so that both the cost of care is reduced and more patients have access to care.  This can be accomplished through reduction of idle time, lessening the time needed to provide services and matching resources to the needs where they can have the greatest possible impact on health.  Within their chapters, authors address: (1)   Use of scheduling to improve healthcare efficiency. (2)   Objectives, constraints and mathematical formulations. (3)   Key methods and techniques for creating schedules. (4)   Recent developments that improve the available problem solving methods. Vapor-liquid equilibrium data, heat of mixing (excess enthalpies), and volumetric properties of systems are required for both the applications in design of industrial technological processes and the understanding the structure and the intermolecular interactions in the systems. On the basis of classical thermodynamics the measured experimental data combined together enable us the calculation of non-measurable thermodynamic properties significant for the technological calculations. The present volume is a compilation of experimental and derived property data on subcritical binary homogeneous (single-phase) or heterogeneous (two-phase) liquid–liquid mixtures. All the components are well-defined pure substances, which are organic nonelectrolytes and water. The present volume is divided into three subvolumes (A, B, C). 800 representative data sets that cover all types of properties and chemical systems are selected for Subvolume A. While Subvolume B comprises 1032 data sets for binary mixtures containing one or two hydrocarbons, Subvolume C is providing 1014 data sets for non-hydrocarbon binary mixtures.

Volume II/29 „Molecular Constants Mostly from Microwave, Molecular Beam, and Sub-Doppler Laser Spectroscopy“ is planned to appear as a series A, B, C and D1, D2, D3 for the diamagnetic, and E for the paramagnetic linear and polyatomic species, respectively. Like in the preceding volumes II/24 and II/19, which have appeared in the years around 1999 and 1992, respectively, the diamagnetic substances are arranged in the manner suggested by Hill („Hill‘s system“, 1900), meaning an almost strict alphabetical order. The ionic species are included in the alphabetical arrangement of the neutral ones in each table. The information is grouped differently in comparison with the previous volumes. All relevant properties of a molecule and the corresponding parameters can be found concentrated under its sum formula in volume II/29. This diminishes the need of turning pages because rotational and related constants, dipole moments, barriers to internal rotation, hyperfine coupling parameters, or Zeeman data were hitherto listed in different tables. The present subvolume II/29B contains data for linear molecules.

Appetite ControlH.-G. Joost, German Institute of Human Nutrition, Potsdam, Germany (Ed.)

Feature 7 Written by distinguished scientists who are leading experts in the field,

and who have contributed important, original data to our understanding of the mechanisms of appetite control

The volume ‘Appetite Control’ provides a comprehensive description of the mechanisms controlling food intake, and thereby energy balance, in the mammalian organism.  During the last decade, research in this area has produced a remarkable wealth of information and has characterized the function of numerous peptides, transmitters, and receptors in appetite control.  Dysfunction of these circuits leads to obesity, a growing health concern.  However, the plethora of mechanistic information is in marked contrasts to an almost complete lack of anti-obesity drugs that meet the safety standards required for the chronic therapy of morbid obesity.  Consequently, ongoing research aims to identify additional targets and agents for a pharmacological intervention.  Thus, the mechanisms of appetite control as well as all agents interfering with its control are of considerable practical interest. The authors of the volume are distinguished scientists who are leading experts in the field, and who have contributed important, original data to our understanding of the mechanisms of appetite control. They have quite different scientific backgrounds and, together, they represent all relevant disciplines. Thereby, the topics are presented from different points of view, not exclusively from that of pharmacology and neuroendocrinology. Thus, the volume addresses all scientists who are interested in the field of obesity research and the pathophysiology of appetite control.

Clinical Cardiac MRI is a comprehensive textbook intended for everyone involved in magnetic resonance imaging of the heart. It is designed both as a useful guide for newcomers to the field and as an aid for those who routinely perform such studies. The first edition, published in 2004-5, was very well received within the cardiac imaging community, and has generally been considered the reference because of its completeness, its clarity, and the number and quality of the illustrations. Moreover, the addition of a CD-ROM showing 50 real-life cases significantly enhanced the value of the book. In this second edition, the aim has been to maintain the same quality while incorporating the newest insights and developments in this rapidly evolving domain of medical imaging. The four editors, all experts in the field, have taken great care to ensure a homogeneous high standard throughout the book.

Turbomachinery Flow Physics and Dynamic PerformanceM. T. Schobeiri, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA

Features 7 Provides fundamental principles of Turbomachinery Flow Physics and

Dynamic Performance7 Successful textbook in its 2nd rigorously updated and enhanced edition

incl. new chapters dealing with laminar turbulent transition, turbulence and boundary layer

7 Written by a leading expert in the field

The first edition of this book was concentrated on turbomachinery flow physics, design, off-design and nonlinear dynamics performance. As I mentioned in the preface to the first edition, in dealing with three-dimensional turbulent flows through a turbomachinery component, for the reasons I outlined, I refrained from presenting a multitude of existing turbulence models. In the meantime, only a few of those models have survived exhibiting the standard working tools implemented in almost all computational tools dealing with turbomachinery flow simulations. Experienced turbomachinery aerodynamicist knowledgeable of the underlying physics of the models in existing commercial codes is able to appropriately interpret the results. Without this knowledge, however, the user of commercial codes may tend to uncritically accept computational results as infallible. This issue has been addressed in the current second edition. While maintaining the unifying character of the book structure in this second revised and extended edition all chapters have undergone a rigorous update and enhancement. Accounting for the need of the turbomachinery community, three chapters have been added, that deal with computationally relevant aspects of turbomachinery design such as boundary layer transition, turbulence and boundary layer. With this second edition, the readers have a solid source of information for designing state-of-the art turbomachinery components and systems at hand.

Complexity Theories of Cities Have Come of AgeAn Overview with Implications to Urban Planning and DesignJ. Portugali, Tel Aviv University,Israel; H. Meyer, E. Stolk, TU Delft, Netherlands (Eds)

Today, our urban centres are an embodiment of the complex, historical co-evolution of knowledge, desires and technology. Our activities co-evolve with our aspirations, mediated by the existing technologies and social structures.  The city represents the accretion and accumulation of successive layers of collective activity , structuring and being structured by other, increasingly distant cities, reaching now right around the globe. This historical and structural evolution cannot therefore be understood or captured by any set of fixed mathematical relations such as simultaneous, or even dynamic, equations. Structural changes imply that the patterns of growth, and their underlying reasons change over time, and therefore that any model attempting to represent changing urban morphology and patterns of flow, must be dynamic, based on the mechanisms that drive the changes occurring at a given moment. This carefully edited post-proceedings volume gathers a snapshot view, by leading researchers in field, of current complexity theories of cities. In it, the achievements, criticisms and potentials yet to be realized are reviewed and the implications to planning and urban design are assessed.

Ocean DynamicsD. Olbers, Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany; J. Willebrand, IfM-Geomar, Kiel, Germany; C. Eden, University Hamburg, Germany

Features 7 Concise introduction into the topic7 Extensive bibliography and index7 Appendix provides short excursions into the mathematical background

Ocean Dynamics’ is a concise introduction to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the common approximations for geophysical fluid dynamics, presenting a comprehensive approach to large-scale ocean circulation theory. The book is written on the physical and mathematical level of graduate students in theoretical courses of physical oceanography, meteorology and environmental physics. An extensive bibliography and index, extensive side notes and recommendations for further reading, and a comparison with the specific atmospheric physics where applicable, makes this volume also a useful reading for researchers. Each of the four parts of the book – fundamental laws, common approximations, ocean waves, oceanic turbulence and eddies, and selected aspects of ocean dynamics – starts with elementary considerations, blending then classical topics with more advanced developments of fluid mechanics and theoretical oceanography. The last part covers the theory of the global wind-driven circulation in homogeneous and stratified regimes, the circulation and overturning in the Southern Ocean, and the global meridional overturning and thermohaline-driven circulation. Emphasis is placed on simple physical models rather than access to extensive numerical results, enabling students to understand and reproduce the complex theory mostly by analytical means. All equations and models are derived in detail and illustrated by numerous figures. The appendix provides short excursions into the mathematical background, such as vector analysis, statistics, and differential equations

Aging Research in YeastM. Breitenbach, University of Salzburg, Austria; S. M. Jazwinski, Tulane University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA, USA; P. Laun, University of Salzburg, Austria (Eds)

Features 7 Yeast aging research and its relevance to humans7 Thorough account of a rapidly expanding field7 Offers a molecular cell biology perspective on aging7 Written by authorities in the field of aging research

This volume includes contributions by the leading experts in the field of yeast aging. Budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and other fungal organisms provide models for aging research that are relevant to organismic aging and to the aging processes occurring in the human body. Replicative aging, in which only the mother cell ages while the daughter cell resets the clock to zero is a model for the aging of stem cell populations in humans, while chronological aging (measured by survival in stationary phase) is a model for the aging processes in postmitotic cells (for instance, neurons of the brain). Most mechanisms of aging are studied in yeast. Among them, this book discusses: mitochondrial theories of aging, emphasizing oxidative stress and retrograde responses; the role of autophagy and mitophagy; the relationship of apoptosis to aging processes; the role of asymmetric segregation of damage in replicative aging; the role of replication stress; and the role of the cytoskeleton in aging. Modern methods of yeast genetics and genomics are described that can be used to search for aging-specific functions in a genome-wide unbiased fashion. The similarities in the pathology of senescence (studied in yeast) and of cancer cells, including genome instability, are examined.

Soft Computing in Humanities and Social SciencesR. Seising, European Centre for Soft Computing, Mieres, Spain; V. Sanz González, Oviedo, Spain (Eds)

Features 7 Recent research on soft computing in humanities and social sciences7 Carefully edited book on applications of soft computing to human

sciences7 Written by leading experts in the field

The field of Soft Computing in Humanities and Social Sciences is at a turning point. The strong distinction between “science” and “humanities” has been criticized from many fronts and, at the same time, an increasing cooperation between the so-called “hard sciences” and “soft sciences” is taking place in a wide range of scientific projects dealing with very complex and interdisciplinary topics. In the last fifteen years the area of Soft Computing has also experienced a gradual rapprochement to disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and also in the field of Medicine, Biology and even the Arts, a phenomenon that did not occur much in the previous years. The collection of this book presents a generous sampling of the new and burgeoning field of Soft Computing in Humanities and Social Sciences, bringing together a wide array of authors and subject matters from different disciplines. Some of the contributors of the book belong to the scientific and technical areas of Soft Computing while others come from various fields in the humanities and social sciences such as Philosophy, History, Sociology or Economics. Rudolf Seising received a Ph.D. degree in philosophy of science and a postdoctoral lecture qualification (PD) in history of science from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. He is an Adjoint Researcher at the European Centre for Soft Computing in Mieres (Asturias), Spain. Veronica Sanz earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University Complutense of Madrid (Spain). Structural Synthesis of Parallel RobotsPart 4: Other Topologies with Two and Three Degrees of FreedomG. Gogu, Clermont University, IFMA, Clermont-Ferrand, France

Features 7 Structural solutions of parallel robots in a systematic approach including

maximally regular and fully-isotropic solutions7 Presented for the first time in the literature7 Part of a larger work consisting of several volumes treating this topic

exhaustively

This book represents the fourth part of a larger work dedicated to the structural synthesis of parallel robots. Part 1 (Gogu 2008a) presented the methodology of structural synthesis and the systematisation of structural solutions of simple and complex limbs with two to six degrees of connectivity systematically generated by the structural synthesis approach. Part 2 (Gogu 2009a) presented structural solutions of translational parallel robotic manipulators with two and three degrees of mobility. Part 3 (Gogu 2010a) focussed on structural solutions of parallel robotic manipulators with planar motion of the moving platform. This book offers other topologies of parallel robotic manipulators with two and three degrees of freedom systematically generated by using the structural synthesis approach proposed in Part 1. The originality of this work resides in the fact that it combines the new formulae for mobility connectivity, redundancy and overconstraints, and the evolutionary morphology in a unified approach of structural synthesis giving interesting innovative solutions for parallel robotic manipulators. This is the first book of robotics presenting solutions of coupled, decoupled, uncoupled, fully-isotropic and maximally regular translational parallel robotic manipulators systematically generated by using the structural synthesis approach proposed in Part 1. Non-redundant/redundant, overconstrained/isostatic solutions with simple/complex limbs actuated by linear/rotary actuators with/without idle mobilities are proposed. Many solutions are presented here for the first time in the literature. The author had to make a difficult and challenging choice between protecting these solutions through patents, and releasing them directly into the public domain. The second option was adopted by publishing them in various recent scientific publications and mainly in this book. In this way, the author hopes to contribute to a rapid and widespread implementation of these solutions in future industrial products.

Vibrations of Elastic SystemsApplications to MEMS and NEMSE. Magrab, University of Maryland, Bethesda, MA, USA

Features 7 Employs a systematic and consistent approach to the development of the

subject7 Presents new analytical and numerical results7 Can be used as a design guide to determine the impact of parameter

choices on system characteristics7 Can be used as a reference for quickly finding governing equations for

beams, plates, and shells subject to a wide combination of boundary conditions

This work presents a unified approach to the vibrations of elastic systems as applied to MEMS devices, mechanical components, and civil structures. Applications include atomic force microscopes, energy harvesters, and carbon nanotubes and consider such complicating effects as squeeze film damping, viscous fluid loading, in-plane forces, and proof mass interactions with their elastic supports. These effects are analyzed as single degree-of-freedom models and as more realistic elastic structures. The governing equations and boundary conditions for beams, plates, and shells with interior and boundary attachments are derived by applying variational calculus to an expression describing the energy of the system. The advantages of this approach regarding the generation of orthogonal functions and the Rayleigh-Ritz method are demonstrated. A large number of graphs and tables are given to show the impact of various factors on the systems’ natural frequencies, mode shapes, and responses.

Essays on Law and War at the Fault LinesM. N. Schmitt, US Naval War College, Newport, RI, USA

Features 7 Written by a highly reputed author7 Only work dealing with the most complex and controversial issues of

International Humanitarian Law and the use of force7 Often cited works, used as a foundation for much subsequent work in the

area

This collection of essays by Professor Michael N. Schmitt of Durham University draws together those of his articles published over the past two decades that have explored particular fault lines in the law of armed conflict. As such, they examine the complex interplay between warfare and law, seeking to identify where the law and warfare appear to diverge, and where such apparent divergence can be accommodated through contextual interpretation of the law. Each essay examines a particular issue in either the jus ad bellum (the law governing resort to force) or jus in bello (international humanitarian law) that has proven contentious in terms of applying extant norms to the evolving face of armed conflict. Among the topics addressed are counter-terrorism, cyber operations, asymmetrical warfare, assassination, environmental warfare and the participation of civilians in hostilities.

Restoring Lands - Coordinating Science, Politics and ActionComplexities of Climate and GovernanceH. A. Karl, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, USA; L. Scarlett, Resources for the Future, Washington, DC, USA; J. C. Vargas-Moreno, M. Flaxman, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA (Eds)

Features 7 Provides a roadmap that will help to achieve healthier ecosystems

alongside productive societies7 Includes contributions from policy makers, government, political

scientists and engineers7 Provides a unique insight into coordinating scientists, politicians and

people to act to restore and sustain lands

Environmental issues, vast and varied in their details, unfold at the confluence of people and place. They present complexities in their biophysical details, their scope and scale, and the dynamic character of human action and natural systems. Addressing environmental issues often invokes tensions among battling interests and competing priorities. Air and water pollution, the effects of climate change, ecosystem transformations—these and other environmental issues involve scientific, social, economic, and institutional challenges. This book analyzes why tackling many of these problems is so difficult and why sustainability involves more than adoption of greener, cleaner technologies. Sustainability, as discussed in this book, involves knowledge flows and collaborative decision processes that integrate scientific and technological methods and tools, political and governance structures and regimes, and social and community values. The authors synthesize a holistic and adaptive approach to rethinking the framework for restoring healthy ecosystems that are the foundation for thriving communities and dynamic economies. This approach is that of collective action. Through their research and practical experiences, the authors have learned that much wisdom resides among diverse people in diverse communities. New collaborative decision-making institutions must reflect that diversity and tap into its wisdom while also strengthening linkages among scientists and decision makers. From the pre-publication reviews: “Finally, we have a book that explains how science is irrelevant without people.  It’s people who decide when and how to use science, not scientists.  This book gives us a roadmap for how to really solve complex problems.  It involves hard work, and creating new relationships between scientists and the public that don’t typically exist in our society.” -John M. Hagan, Ph.D. President, Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences

Totally Implantable Venous Access DevicesI. Di Carlo, University of Catania, Italy; R. Biffi, Istituto Europeo di Oncologia, Milano, Italy (Eds)

Features 7 This volume is an update on the evolution of the indications for

implantation and the associated increases in complications and costs7 The book will be helpful for all the specialists involved in this field7 Also for students and nurses

Since their first application in 1982, Totally Implantable Venous Access Devices (TIVADs) have become increasingly important in the clinical practice, as more intensive chemotherapy and parenteral treatments have come into use. At this time, there is objective evidence that TIVADs are a safe, effective strategy for long-term venous access; they play a significant role throughout the management of the oncology patient, as they are needed in the initial phases for active treatments as well as in the last stages for palliative measures, making possible repeated administration of chemotherapeutic vesicant agents, nutrients, antibiotics, analgesics, and blood products. According to a number of prospective studies, use of TIVADs is associated with a significant complication rate (10% to 25% of all patients). Evidence-based data support that most complications are directly related to inappropriate technique of placement and/or nursing care, sometimes leading to TIVAD loss, significant morbidity, increased duration of hospitalization, and additional medical cost. Aim of this volume is to provide clinicians, nurses and medical students with a multidisciplinary, full update on these devices. Coming from different Countries, a group of world-renowned Experts - both in the clinical and research fields – cooperated to the topics, as long term central venous access can not be longer considered a routine matter, and serious complications can be maintained at a very low level only if strict adherence to a well-defined protocol of surgical technique and of catheter care is maintained.

Vortex Formation in the Cardiovascular System will recapitulate the current knowledge about the vortex formation in the cardiovascular system, from mechanics to cardiology. This can facilitate the interaction between basic scientists and clinicians on the topic of the circulatory system. The book begins with a synopsis of the fundamentals aspects of fluid mechanics to give the reader the essential background to address the proceeding chapters. Then the fundamental elements of vortex dynamics will be discussed, explaining the conditions for their formation and the rules governing their dynamics. The main equations are accompanied by mathematical models. Cardiovascular vortex formation is first analyzed in physiological, healthy conditions in the heart chambers and in the large arterial vessels. The analysis is initially presented with an intuitive appeal grounded on the physical phenomena and a focus on its clinical significance. In the proceeding chapters, the knowledge gained from either clinical or basic science literature will be discussed. The corresponding mathematical elements will finally be presented to ensure the adequate diligence. The proceeding chapters ensue to the analysis of pathological conditions, when the reader may have developed the ability to recognize normal from abnormal vortex formation phenomenon. Pathological vortex formation represents vortices that develop at sites where normally laminar flow should exist, e.g. stenosis and aneurisms. This analysis naturally leads to the interaction of vortices due to the surgical procedures with respect to prediction of changes in vortex formation. The existing techniques, from medical imaging to numerical simulations, to explore vortex flows in the cardiovascular systems will also be described. The presentations are accompanied by the mathematical definitions can that be understandable for reader without the advanced mathematical background, while an interested reader with more advanced knowledge in mathematics can be referred to references for further quantitative analyses. The book pursues the objective to transfer the fundamental vortex formation phenomena with application to the cardiovascular system to the reader. This book will be a valuable support for physicians in the evaluation of vortex influence on diagnosis and therapeutic choices. At the same time, the book will provide the rigorous information for research scientists, either from medicine and mechanics, working on the cardiovascular circulation incurring with the physics of vortex dynamics.

Neural Metabolism In VivoI.-Y. Choi, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, USA; R. Gruetter, University of Lausanne and Geneva, Lausanne, Switzerland (Eds)

Features 7 Uses full-color figures to illustrate difficult concepts7 Provides a comprehensive overview of neurobiology7 Includes cutting-edge research

From the preface: “Neural Metabolism In Vivo aims to provide a comprehensive overview of neurobiology by presenting the basic principles of up-to-date and cutting-edge technology, as well as their application in assessing the functional, morphological and metabolic aspects of the brain.  Investigation of neural activity of the living brain via neurovascular coupling using multimodal imaging techniques extended our understanding of fundamental neurophysiological mechanisms, regulation of cerebral blood flow in connection to neural activity and the interplay between neurons, astrocytes and blood vessels.  Constant delivery of glucose and oxygen for energy metabolism is vital for brain function, and the physiological basis of neural activity can be assessed through measurements of cerebral blood flow and consumption of glucose and oxygen…. This book presents the complex physiological and neurochemical processes of neural metabolism and function in response to various physiological conditions and pharmacological stimulations.  Neurochemical detection technologies and quantitative aspects of monitoring cerebral energy substrates and other metabolites in the living brain are described under the “Cerebral metabolism of antioxidants, osmolytes and others in vivo” section.  Altogether, the advent of new in vivo tools has transformed neuroscience and neurobiology research, and demands interdisciplinary approaches as each technology could only approximate a very small fraction of the true complexity of the underlying biological processes.  However, translational values of the emerging in vivo methods to the application of preclinical to clinical studies cannot be emphasized enough.  Thus, it is our hope that advances in our understanding of biochemical, molecular, functional and physiological processes of the brain could eventually help people with neurological problems, which are still dominated by the unknowns.” -- In-Young Choi and Rolf Gruetter

Novel Developments in Stem Cell MobilizationFocus on CXCR4S. Fruehauf, Paracelsus Klinik, Osnabruck, Germany; J. Zeller, German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany; G. Calandra, Cresco, PA, USA (Eds)

Features 7 A concise review of the current status of knowledge and future

developments of CXCR4 will be presented7 Contributors are internationally leaders in the field7 A comprehensive treatment of the subject with numerous color

illustrations

Recently the CXCR4/CXCL12-axis has been recognized as one of the pivotal adhesion pathways by which hematopoietic stem cells are retained in the bone marrow. CXCR4 antagonists with different chemical specification are being developed. Pharmacology research guides the way to the rational development effective antagonists. One antagonist, plerixafor, is clinically approved now for stem cell mobilization of lymphoma and myeloma patients. This allows patients to receive potentially life-saving treatment which could not have been administered otherwise. Through early clinical studies it was recognized that CXCR4 antagonists also mobilize malignant hematopoetic cells, i.e. leukemia cells. In preclinical studies a sensitization of mobilized leukemic cells to standard cytotoxic chemotherapy could be shown. Clinical studies are under way. CXCR4 antagonists are an exciting new class of compounds which are also employed for the mobilization of angiogenic cells or for the treatment of solid tumors. In this book a concise review of the current status of knowledge and future developments will be presented.

Stem Cell TechnologyF. A. Khan, Manipal University, Dubai , United Arab Emirates

Features 7 First book, which deals with all the aspects of stem cell technology from

bench to patients7 Suitable not only for graduate students, but for everyone else, who works

in a biotech lab7 Combines theoretical background with methods and applications

This book examines all topics essential to stem cell biology, stem cell research and stem cell technology, enabling readers to understand the basic, scientific, ethical, clinical and industrial aspects of stem cells in highly concise and lucid terms. One reason that stem cells are important is the human development from stem cells. As such, an understanding of their unique attributes and control can teach us more about early human development. Diseases such as cancer are thought to result from abnormal cell proliferation and differentiation. This means that an understanding of where things go ‚wrong‘ in stem cell division and thus lead to cancer can help us find ways to prevent these dysfunctional changes or treat them effectively using targeted drugs.  Stem cell research has the potential to teach us more about how birth defects occur and how they can be prevented or possibly reversed. An understanding of the regulation and chemical triggers of stem cell proliferation and differentiation is key to addressing birth defects. Likely the most important therapeutic value of stem cells is the use of cell therapies. A cell therapy is a treatment that replaces dysfunctional or diseased tissues with stem cells.  At present, stem cells are already used in cell therapies for the treatment of some types of cancer, but this is only a small step given the number of diseases affecting humans today. Stem cells’ potential to replace damaged cells and tissues is an exciting possibility for those who will require a transplant during their lifetime. Diseases that are expected to be treated with stem cells one day include Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as those diseases affecting the retina and the heart. In addition to cell therapy, the stem cells can also be used to test new drug molecules for their efficacy and toxicity, as it has been shown that stem cells provide a better tool for studying the effects of new drug molecules on different types of cells such as neuronal cells, pancreatic cells or kidney cells that are derived from stem cells. Clearly, stem cell use is vital and holds great promise for treating and perhaps one day curing many diseases.

Regulatory RNAsBasics, Methods and ApplicationsB. Mallick, New York State Department of Health, NY, USA; Z. Ghosh, Bioinformatics Center, Kolkata, India (Eds)

Features 7 Complete overview on regulatory RNAs7 Includes both, theoretical background and applications7 Written by international experts

Recent progress in high-throughput technologies and genome wide transcriptome studies have lead to a significant scientific milestone of discovering non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) which spans through a major portion of the genome. These RNAs most often act as riboregulators, and actively participate in the regulation of important cellular functions at the transcriptional and/or post-transcriptional levels rather than simply being an intermediated messenger between DNA and proteins. As the appreciation for the importance of ncRNAs continues to emerge, it is also increasingly clear that these play critical roles in gene regulatory processes during development and differentiation. Further, regulatory RNAs are useful biomarkers for diagnosis of diseases. Hence these RNA regulators are essential to the development of therapeutics. This book on “Regulatory RNAs” offers a comprehensive view on our current understanding of these regulatory RNAs viz. siRNA, miRNA, piRNA, snoRNA, long non-coding RNA, small RNA etc. It addresses both the biogenesis and mechanism of action of regulatory RNAs with a primary focus on their annotation, experimental methodologies (microarray, next-gen sequencing etc.) for their discovery, computational tools for their prediction, and above all, applications of these revolutionary regulatory molecules in understanding biological systems and diseases, including therapeutics. This comprehensive volume is intended for readers with research or teaching interests in ncRNA biology and will provide a major information resource on current research in the fast-moving fields of RNA and gene expression regulation. Cutting-edge and concise, “Regulatory RNAs: Basics, Methods and Applications” promises to support vital research in the field of regulatory RNAs, ever-continuing to grow rapidly and gain increasing importance in basic and translational biology.

The Symbolic Species EvolvedT. S. Schilhab, University of Århus, København, Denmark; F. Stjernfelt, University of Århus, Denmark; T. Deacon, University of Berkeley, CA, U.SA. (Eds)

Features 7 New perspectives on evolutionary cognition from some of the world’s

leading researchers in the field7 Gives a broad introduction to the range of perspectives on evolutionary

cognition Includes up-to-date research from the author of7 The symbolic species, Professor Terrence Deacon

This anthology is a compilation of the best contributions from Symbolic Species Conferences I, II (which took place in 2006, 2007). In 1997 the American anthropologist Terrence Deacon published The Symbolic Species: The Coevolution of Language and the Brain. The book is widely considered a seminal work in the subject of evolutionary cognition. However, Deacons book was the first step – further steps have had to be taken. The proposed anthology is such an important associate. The contributions are written by a wide variety of scholars each with a unique view on evolutionary cognition and the questions raised by Terrence Deacon - emergence in evolution, the origin of language, the semiotic ‚missing link‘, Peirce‘s semiotics in evolution and biology, biosemiotics, evolutionary cognition, Baldwinian evolution, the neuroscience of linguistic capacities as well as phylogeny of the homo species, primatology, embodied cognition and knowledge types.
