Introduction Ethiopia- located in the horn of Africa and orgin of man kind ‘Lucy’, 13 months

of sunshine, more than 82 language and with the total population of more than 90 million.

Ethiopia people has strong and rich cultural, social capital and traditional associations- equib, idder, senbete, jige, wonfel, debere, churchs, geda system, etc.

Regardless of multifaceted values, as in other part of the world, the community development approach dominated by external driven in Ethiopia

Context and development experiences of Ethiopia, Oxfam Canada initiated citizen-led and asset-based approach in partnership with Coady to promote of local ownership and “soft” elements in provoking and sustaining real change.

Oxfam –Canada and Coady International Institute initiated an ABCD programme in Ethiopia partnering with six NGOs (Agri-service Ethiopia, iDE, SEDA, SOS Sahel, Hundee and KMG Ethiopia) since 2003.

Now Oxfam in collaboration with Coady currently implementing ABCD embedded Value Chain Development/next level of ABCD

Oxfam Canada has been operating in Amhara, Benishangul,Oromiya and SNNP Regions

What is next 1. Household economic analysis /economic literacy at household

level

How

- The community action plan + household economic analysis (using as planning tools)

- Facilitators help them to do and the coop people will help the household

- This will help them to utilize existing opportunity, enhancing investment, create jobs within community, reduce leaks,….

- Adult Functional Literacy program will compliment this action…

What is next…………….2. Testing more producers led value chain development with Oxfam Affiliates

Through training of their field staffs and sharing of the manual

3. Replicating ABCD Approaches within Oxfam Affiliates(America, Spain and Great Britain) SMS Sharing through our quarterly bulletin Training Working and sharing with Economic Justice team Field visit

4. Organizing national and regional workshop to share experience and lesson of using ABCD Organizing learning workshop

5. Closely working with CANGO to promote ABCD

Commitments of Oxfam Canada in using ABCD approach

Ethiopian Growth and Transformation Plan encourages community asset mobilization .

Reach practical experience of ABCD in Ethiopia and local and international NGOs shows interest to adopt ABCD.

Producer led Value Chain Tools were tested and the result is promising. Rich practical experience in PLVA in different commodities and context.

The number of ABCD communities are emerging and pave the way for cross learning from each other.
