Over two weeks, ABC TV’s Message Stick celebrates its 10th birthday in two shows - Something To Celebrate (Sunday, August 9) and Movers And Shakers (Sunday, August 16) by throwing a party and revisiting some of the most inspirational programs shown on the program over ten years.

The second episode, Movers And Shakers, is a program of highlights from the last decade. From Olympic Gold Medallist Cathy Freeman to the late land rights campaigner and actor Bob Maza and the Torres Strait’s legendary Mills Sisters, these people have extraordinary stories to share. These are intimate portraits of ordinary people achieving extraordinary things against considerable odds.

Message Stick is the latest program produced by the ABC’s Indigenous Programs Unit (IPU). The IPU was established by the ABC in 1987 with the objective of becoming a centre of excellence for the production of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander television in Australia, and to promote a greater understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. This program is a celebration of that achievement.

Don’t miss the second Junior Einstein Factor Special for 2009 – Sunday 16 August at 6.30pm. Hosted by Peter Berner, our juniors aged between 13 and 15 years old will dazzle you with their in-depth knowledge and baffle you with their brilliance.

MacKenzie Pickering from New South Wales has a passion for history’s most famous scientist - Albert Einstein. Will he know enough to nudge out fellow contestants, both from Victoria – Alice Millar and Eben Nixon-Pope? Alice is obsessed with the movies and life of Hollywood legend Judy Garland and has even set up her own Youtube channel dedicated to the star. She’s a force to be reckoned with.

When he’s not at school, you can usually find Eben at the Melbourne zoo, helping keepers at his favourite enclosure - the Gibbons. Eben’s passion for this endearing primate will definitely impress.

Helping our contestants on their first Einstein Factor journey is our Brains Trust panel of experts. Australian living treasure and Einstein favourite Dr Barry Jones AO, past quiz champion, Matt Parkinson and First Tuesday Book Club host and ABC TV personality Jennifer Byrne.

Stephen Fry In America: Deep South


Intrigued and bewitched by America’s most characterful region – a place of cotton, courtesy, gospel music and mint juleps – Stephen Fry explores what it is that makes the south so distinctive.

This week Stephen joins coal miners deep underground in West Virginia, meets a young man with the state of Kentucky tattooed on his butt and enjoys a delirious session of bluegrass music-making in Tennessee. He has an encounter with a bear in the Smoky Mountains and ascends in a hot air balloon above North Carolina.

Next, Stephen travels to the coast and learns the language of slaves in South Carolina, he’s invited into a Georgian family’s old plantation house to join their Thanksgiving celebration (and has a slightly nervy encounter with a horse), fails as a dancing escort in hot and flashy Florida, and is moved by two very different events in Alabama: a parole board’s deliberations and the extraordinary hoopla of a college ball game, complete with Air Force jets.

Having survived the bomb at the market but forced to flee again, Stephen (Benedict Cumberbatch), Yasim (Anamaria Marinca) and Michael (Max Beesley) take refuge in the ‘swamp’. Michael is now getting ill as a result of taking the tainted vaccine. Nye (David Harewood) and Turney (Geraldine James), who still have Michael under surveillance, watch with interest.

Russell (Robert Carlyle), however, is not out of the game yet. He goes after Nye, breaking into his house and copying his laptop's hard drive.

Watching Yasim and Stephen together, Michael works out the true nature of the bond between them and confronts them. Yasim can't bear it and leaves, but while she's collecting her thoughts in a café, she is approached by Russell. He reveals that he's been making progress, and that it was he who abducted Cooper (Paul Higgins).

Russell takes Yasim, Stephen and Michael to his new hideout and brings Cooper to them while Stephen gets to work on decrypting Nye's laptop. Cooper agrees to help, but needs samples of other infected blood to compare against Michael's. Russell knows where the refugees who arrived with Michael are being held, and Stephen volunteers to break in and get samples.

As Stephen holds the hands of the dying refugees while extracting their blood, he has a revelation more explosive than he could ever have imagined. Stephen's world is turned upside down as he realises that not everyone is who they seem.

It’s the week of the royal wedding and the streets are buzzing with excitement. Alex (Keeley Hawes) has mixed emotions in remembering the day. She was eight years old at the time and remembers she was left alone at boarding school to watch the event on television. Her mother is also on her mind as she appears on the television, embroiled in a high-profile legal case with the Met. Being a fighter and an optimist, Alex is determined not to let her memories get her down, and enters into the spirit of things.

Gene (Philip Glenister), by contrast, is on edge. He wants to keep the streets quiet for Lady Di’s wedding – so when a protesting family threatens to disturb the peace, he races onto the scene. The Bonds are being forced out of their pub due to the redevelopment of the Docklands and have barricaded themselves in as a protest. Gene sympathises with their cause, but persuades them to keep quiet until Charles and Diana have tied the knot.

No sooner is that fire put out, than another one starts. News comes in of a bomb on CID’s patch. An unlucky dog has been blown up, and now there’s a note saying that the next bomb will target the developer, Danny Moore. Danny is a Thatcherite whose charm provides a pleasant distraction for Alex, for whom the bomb scares have been painful reminders of how her parents were killed. She is desperate to forget everything and Danny provides the perfect escapism. But with a potential bomber on the loose, Gene needs Alex to focus on the task in hand.

Finding The Fallen: Man And Horse

In World War I, men on horseback with swords fought against an emerging modern weapon, the machine gun.

In northern France, on the site of a cavalry charge into the face of relentless machine-gun fire, the trench detectives discover evidence of a desperate act of bravery that stopped the German advance in the spring of 1918, but decimated the ranks of a Canadian cavalry unit.

It was the last great cavalry charge of World War I, and it was made by Canadian soldiers.

As the poignant relationship between these men and their horses is explored, a French farmer reveals a mystery that leads the team to Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, to a car dealer whose ancestor died on that fateful day and whose last resting place was, until now, unknown to him.

Tony Robinson's Crime And Punishment: Guilty As Charred


Tony Robinson continues his quest to discover the origins of English laws, who made them and why.

In this episode, he looks at the period up to and after the Norman invasion, which was perhaps the most turbulent in the history of law. But in the 150 years from 1066, the legal system was transformed. This period saw the signing of the Magna Carta and the establishment of the three major principles of a modern legal system: independent judges, trial by jury, and English common law.

Tony demonstrates trial by flesh burning, visits a town where Norman ideas have inspired punishments for modern day Anti-Social Behaviour Order offenders and discovers how a muddy field in Surrey changed the course of international legal history.

The day of the new library’s official opening arrives and Frances (Robyn Butler), anxiously rehearses her speech, determined to use the occasion to re-stamp her authority.

Although she thinks Nada’s (Nicole Nabout) decision to get the Minister for Ethnic Affairs to open the library was inappropriate, Frances is nevertheless over the moon at the prospect of sitting alongside her. Unfortunately the Minister is not remotely interested in Frances or what she has to say, preferring to mingle with Nada and other guests at the Culture Pod.

Frances’s jealousy is compounded when Terry (Wayne Hope) discovers Christine (Roz Hammond) is pregnant at the opening and lavishes attention on her. Christine is preoccupied with her own troubles; Nikko is legally demanding to be present at the birth and Neil (Bob Franklin) is trying to persuade her that he could be the father of the baby. While secretly, Dawn (Heidi Arena) and Matthew (Stephen Ballantyne) engage in a clandestine steamy relationship.

Tara (Toni Collette) feels the best she’s felt in a long time. She loves the mural she is working on and feels she’s found a new friend in Tiffany (Jessica St Clair).

That night, while Charmaine (Rosemarie DeWitt), Tara and Tiffany are out for drinks, Tiffany decides she wants to see one of Tara’s alternate personalities and begins probing Tara in a way that turns ugly.

Tiffany wakes up the next morning horrified when she finds the mural is destroyed and she suspects Tara. Tara is confused, she has absolutely no memory of any of her alters destroying the mural. But who else could be responsible?

Take a voyage of discovery with The Chaser’s Chris Taylor as he reveals the secrets behind a fascinating mix of treasures from Australia’s National Heritage List.

In the third season of five-minute mini-documentaries in the National Treasures series, Chris travels around Australia delivering historical snapshots of places from the National Heritage List. Established by the Australian Government in 2004, the National Heritage List is a collection of places that contribute to Australia's national identity.

Chris talks with experts and enthusiasts, revealing fascinating insights into our famous and not-so-famous past. Visiting objects and places of significance, including Fremantle Prison and the ruins of the Dutch merchant ship Batavia in Western Australia, the Eureka flag and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Victoria, Francis De Groot’s sword in NSW and the Naracoorte Caves fossil mammal site in South Australia, Chris Taylor’s enthusiasm shines a welcome spotlight on the sometimes forgotten gems that are an irreplaceable part of our national story.

In the third mini-documentary of the series, Chris visits the stone ruins on Western Australia’s remote West Wallabi Island - the oldest structures built by Europeans in Australia – which tell a tale of mutiny and murder. Built as a fort in 1629 by survivors of the shipwrecked Dutch merchant ship Batavia, the National Heritage-listed shipwreck site provides a lasting memorial to the treachery of under-merchant Jeronimus Cornelisz, who had conspired to mutiny and steal the treasure-laden ship before it struck a reef. The mutineers murdered more than 120 shipwreck survivors before most were captured, tried and hanged for their crimes. Batavia was found in 1963 and is now on display at the Western Australian Maritime Museum. The wreck convinced the Dutch East India Company to make accurate charts of the coastline, putting Australia on the world map.

Whatever! The Science Of Teens

A typical teenager goes to bed late, and can’t get out of bed in the morning. But while many adults regard them as layabouts or lazy, the reality is most teens need more sleep not less. Experts say adolescents require between 9 and 10 hours sleep a night – but only a small fraction get this much.

The Teens: In this episode we meet five self-confessed teen night owls who help uncover the biological basis for the typical teen sleep pattern; the impact sleep deprivation has on teens; and how teenagers can restart their body clocks so they can get more sleep. Jessica (16) stays up late working, and playing, on the computer. In the last two years her family says she has become a completely different person in the morning – unable to get out of bed in the morning, grumpy and uncommunicative. Oliver (17), Georgia-Rae (16) and Laura (18), aka ‘The Dead Ghettos’, are an aspiring teen rock band who spend most of their waking hours juggling writing and performing with their school and uni work. Simone (16) has a body clock that is so out of whack her school work is suffering, and so is her family. But she’s determined to find out how she can get a good night’s sleep.

The Science: The latest science shows teenagers have a biological basis for their sleep patterns; their brains are wired to stay up late, sleep in, and sleep more. Add to this a modern 24/7 lifestyle, which bombards them with things that keep them hyper alert and wired, and Australia is now creating a nation of sleep-deprived adolescents. Rather than sleeping too much, teens are some of the most sleep-deprived members of the population, vulnerable to devastating consequences on their physical and mental health.

Web Warriors


Web Warriors offers an unprecedented glimpse into the world's newest and most vulnerable frontier: cyberspace. The film takes us into the world of hackers like Mafia Boy - a 15-year-old high school student who rose to infamy in 2000 by causing millions of dollars in damage after single-handedly shutting down internet giants - including Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Dell, eTrade, and CNN. We meet Donnie who goes on a journey into the Russian cyber underground searching for the creators of a computer virus with the hopes of collecting the $250,000 reward being offered by Microsoft.

Computer viruses now have the ability to control millions of computers unbeknownst to their owners, creating massive illegal computer networks known as ‘Botnets’. These ‘Botnets’ are being put to illicit uses including identity theft and cyber extortion. A massive cyber attack against Estonia in 2007 virtually shut down the country. Web Warriors offers rare interviews with cyber sleuths from the FBI, the Pentagon, NATO, and the American Department of Homeland Security who explain how cyberspace has become the latest battle ground between nation states, and how terrorist groups are already plotting their next move.

George Gently: The Burning Man

Old-school police inspector George Gently has found a new enthusiasm for his job after moving out of the increasingly corrupt Scotland Yard, London in the 1960s to Northumberland. He has developed a fatherly attitude towards cocky young Durham Detective Sergeant John Bacchus and wants to prevent him learning unethical police procedures.

They are called to a suspected IRA murder site where the burnt body of a man is discovered near the RAF base at Huxford. The only recognisable clue is a ring engraved from ‘Wanda’.

It is identified as coming from the vampish owner of a local transport cafe who was a former lover of Irishman Rauri O’Connell.

A Special Branch officer enters the case, but Gently is suspicious of his motives. The officer needs to know whether the body is that of O’Connell or that of a missing agent of his.

Meanwhile another man, a friend of O’Connell’s, O’Shaughnessy, has gone missing and a shedload of sten guns stored at the RAF base, and to which he had access, is gone too.

Bacchus learns some harsh truths about Special Branch tactics and ultimately the grudging admiration he has for Gently’s steely police intelligence and quaint manners rises.

Following Dale’s (Tom Budge) departure, Bev (Valerie Bader) and Rosemary (Tracy Mann) comfort Lizzy (Kathryn Beck) as her pre-birth nerves grow. Bev suggests that Lizzy move into Dale’s bus and they get busy helping her to fix it up.

Meanwhile, Art’s (Richard Roxburgh) star begins to ascend when he receives word that his first book, Gross National Happiness, has become an online hit amongst young travellers.

Lizzy and Vance (Tom Long) are increasingly drawn to each other, despite Vance vainly fighting to keep it platonic. After a hot curry lunch and some fumbling, Lizzy goes into an early labour with no-one around but Vance to support her.

Bev, Rosemary and Len (Errol O’Neill) kick off their ‘bucket list’ with a hot air balloon ride, however plans go awry when the balloon takes off leaving Len and Dirk, the balloon operator, on the ground and Bev and Rosemary alone as the balloon floats into the sky.

It’s panic stations in the balloon, especially for Rosemary - but Bev takes the reins and her calm in the face of danger marks the beginning of a genuine friendship between the two women.

Meanwhile, Vance - unable to find Bev - steps up to the mark, transporting Lizzy to the Far Out East in a wheelbarrow. With help from Art and Gerry (Nick Tate), Vance reassures Lizzy and offers her his arm to bite on! With the welcome assistance of Bev, who arrives at the eleventh hour, Lizzy gives birth to Tulip Dale, a beautiful baby girl.

Art and Eve’s (Susie Porter) estrangement deepens as Art’s attempts to warn her about Evagreen's possible motives are misinterpreted as petty jealousy.

After a tip-off from a local bank, DI Samantha Nixon (Lisa Maxwell) mounts an operation to find out why a restaurateur with very few customers is depositing a lot of money into his account.

While watching the restaurant, DC Stevie Moss (Lucy Speed) recognises one of her old informants making a delivery, and DC Terry Perkins (Bruce Byron) decides they can use him for information.

Meanwhile, DI Nixon informs her boss that she’s been offered a job with the Child Exploitation Unit, but wants to see this case through to the end.

When the informant reveals details of a plan to import a large quantity of cocaine using a local air-freight company, the team swings into action, but find they’ve been outsmarted.

Saturday August 22, 9:15pm – Ep. 684 – To Die For

After a failed drugs bust, and now faced with a kidnapping, DI Sam Nixon (Lisa Maxwell) is determined to get a good outcome on her last case at Sun Hill.

With an informant in hospital, no trace of the drugs, and the daughter of one of the drug dealers apparently kidnapped, DI Nixon’s only hope is that she can get someone to talk.

But the suspects - two brothers and the restaurateur whose daughter is missing - are determined to keep the police out of their hair, even though the girl’s life is at stake.

This week on Sunday Arts, Fenella Kernebone speaks with celebrated filmmaker Ang Lee.

Ang Lee

Ang Lee is the celebrated scriptwriter and filmmaker responsible for films such as The Ice Storm, Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Lee’s early films detailed the traditional world of his native Taiwanese culture, and his following films have always portrayed the emotional struggle of the outsider. He is a masterful visual storyteller who has been able to create intimacy across his diverse films. Lee has won many awards for his work, including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the Academy Award Best Director for Brokeback Mountain. Fenella Kernebone spoke with Ang Lee on a recent visit to Australia for the release of his latest film Taking Woodstock.

Talking Heads: Jack Mundey

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson is joined by distinguished Australian union and environmental activist - Jack Mundey.

Back in the seventies Mundey forged a reputation as leader of the Builders’ Labourers Federation and as figurehead for the famous ‘green bans’. He persuaded his fellow union members to ban work on any developments that might be destructive to the environment or that would require important historic buildings to be demolished. At one stage it was estimated they were holding up 3,000 million dollars worth of construction.

This extraordinary campaign, often backed by local communities, stopped Sydney’s Centennial Park from being turned into a concrete sports stadium and its botanic gardens from becoming a car park for the Opera House. Over 100 Australian buildings were saved.

Mundey’s crusading didn’t stop there. He also fought for safety reforms at building sites and for unions to have a voice on social issues.

Now 80 years old, Mundey believes as strongly as ever that we must find a way to harmonise with nature rather than try to conquer it.

Artscape: Artists At Work: Josh Yeldham

Artists At Work invites you up the Hawkesbury River in NSW for an intimate and spiritual journey by boat, to a place where nature, art and fertility prayers collide. As Josh Yeldham creates new work for an upcoming exhibition, we gain a rare insight into the craft, process and philosophy behind his art. In this spectacularly beautiful landscape, abstract paintings, works on paper and totemic owl sculptures are created in nature with almost shamanistic intention.

This documentary reveals the influence that Yeldham’s family life has on his current body of work. After the difficulties he and his wife Jo experienced falling pregnant, many of his works are conceived as fertility offerings.

Now with the birth of their second child imminent, Yeldham is making two new pieces: a painting - Mother with Baby Owl, and a landscape work on paper called Wild Bird Rock. These two creations represent his final offerings to nature in the hope that their unborn baby will be given safe passage.

Using a sander and even a solar-powered dental drill to stunning effect, Yeldham is embarking upon a daring new shift in style. Looking for a much more textural approach, he carves into both paper and clay board to create the topographical illusion of ridges, gullies and creeks. A carved, almost indigenous dotting technique also gives rise to an owl abundantly filled with lilies, seed pods and bush flowers.

The addition of 3D sculptural elements, moveable prayer wheels and even the radical addition of stringed musical components is a new approach that Yeldham hopes will impress rather than shock at an upcoming private collectors’ preview.

The New InventorsHosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is bursting with the innovative and the imaginative, the unique and the unusual, the fantastic and the fascinating. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: agricultural scientist Chris Russell, materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla, and designer Alison Page. Inventions featured on the program:

TOPGUN – by inventor Rob Luck from NSW. Sealant guns are common in the average Australian garage, occasionally making an appearance for the odd DIY job around the house. But for some people this tool is a necessary component of everyday life. Traditional sealant guns are heavy, inefficient and cause significant worker downtime and RSI. The problem with these guns is that they require you to push the sealant through the tool with the force of your own grip. Injuries suffered from this work costs $400 million a year in Australian compensation payments. While on a temporary construction assignment, inventor Rob Luck was shocked that workers were still using what he refers to as ‘dinosaur manual equipment’ in a power-tool age, and decided to develop the sealant gun of the future. Topgun eliminates the risks associated with sealant guns by revolutionising their design. The invention is a fully powered sealant gun that is 2-4 times faster than traditional designs. The tool is controlled through a trigger that automatically pushes the sealant out so that the operator is not required to manually create the pressure. Topgun is extremely accurate, does not drip or run-on, is energy efficient, and has advanced safety features. As well as creating a significant opportunity to reduce workplace injury, the invention’s increased efficiency means it can pay for itself in less than three weeks.

GRID LOCK – by inventor Neil Beerens from VIC. 72-year-old Neil Beerens is making a record third appearance on ABC inventing programs, having had two inventions featured on the original series of The Inventors. Wire mesh panels have many uses, especially in construction and agriculture. The only option on the market for temporarily joining these panels is to tie them with wire. Grid Lock provides a permanent or temporary connection of wire mesh panels, replacing welding and wire with a simple efficient joining device. Neil’s most successful invention has been on the market for 20 years, and he has won a gold and bronze medal at the Geneva invention competition.

SEIV – by inventor Michael Herrett from VIC. Dirt is just about everywhere on a mine site, and when it gets inside heavy machinery it can affect the controls and switches of the cabin, as well as creating an unhealthy environment for the operator. The cabin has to be cleaned out at the end of every shift, but it takes a heavy toll on the vacuum cleaners, and one can assume that the average miner is not that keen on vacuuming. The Self Emptying Industrial Vacuum, or SEIV, is an industrial vacuum cleaner for the cabins of excavators, dump trucks, and any other large equipment on mine sites. It is strong enough to withstand the harsh environment of outback mines, and empties itself at the end of the job, giving miners a break.
