Life: Mammals

Sunday, 8 August 2010

Mammals dominate our planet and can be found in every habitat, except the very deepest ocean. Their success lies in more than just the unique physical traits of fat, fur and warm blood. What makes the mammals stand out is the care they lavish on their young.

New filming techniques reveal behaviour that was previously impossible to capture in extreme locations. Fly amongst one of the largest migrations on Earth, as more than ten million fruit bats leave the Congo basin and converge in a few special trees in Zambia to feed. Sprint with the tiny, extraordinary-looking sengis as it escapes a predatory lizard. See 30 polar bears gather to feed on a bowhead whale carcass. And witness the biggest fight on Earth…male humpback whales battling for a female.

Key animal characters:• Straw coloured fruit bats• Sengi• Polar bears• Humpback whales

Return to Cranford

Sunday, 8 August 2010 FINAL

Miss Matty (Judi Dench) and the ladies of Cranford are in a frenzy of excitement about the imminent visit of Lady Glenmire (Celia Imrie). Until, that is, the Honourable Mrs Jamieson (Barbara Flynn) announces that none of them is of high-enough social standing to meet her.

Deeply hurt, Miss Matty leads the Amazons in snubbing both the newcomer and her hostess. But sociable Lady Glenmire is quick to offer an olive branch by hosting a memorable Halloween party, which results in the forging of warm, new friendships.

Impressed by Edward Bell’s (Matthew McNulty) ambitions and hurt by his own son’s defiance, Mr Buxton (Jonathan Pryce) takes on Edward to act as his land agent. But Edward makes a disastrous decision that has dire consequences, not only for himself, but also for Peggy (Jodie Whittaker), whose fortitude and courage will be tested to the limit.

Meanwhile, Matty is distressed when a surprising discovery about one of their close circle results in a serious falling-out amongst the friends. Mrs Jamieson and Miss Pole (Imelda Staunton) split from the group and Matty is uncertain about how to bring them all back together again.

Matty is also deeply affected by Peggy Bell’s crisis. Knowing painfully well the cost of sacrificing one’s personal happiness for the sake of family obligations, Matty decides to intervene in events to help Peggy. But when tragedy strikes the town, she comes to believe that, unwittingly, she has opened Pandora’s box and fears that Cranford will never recover.

Nicholas Crane's Britannia

Tuesday, 10 August 2010 Final

In the last leg of his epic 5,000 mile journey across the pages of William Camden's 'lost' masterpiece Britannia, Nicholas Crane traverses Ireland, the country that sent a shudder down the spines of Elizabethans.

The Queen said that Ireland was full of 'ravening beasts'. It was impossible to govern, but could not be ignored because the Spanish might use it to launch an attack on Britain. Nicholas sets off to discover why the Emerald Isle terrified the Elizabethans and how Camden tried to tame it.

Jennifer Byrne Presents: Graphic Novels

Tuesday, 10 August 2010

Jennifer Byrne Presents a series of individual treats for lovers of books and writing.

This month Jennifer presents a special on graphic novels, or comics, if you’d prefer. Or picture books. Illustrated fiction. Sequential art narrative, if you want to be very fancy. Whatever label you attach, you know it when you see it.

That vibrant combination of words and images which in recent years have told stories ranging from the Nazi Holocaust – in the case of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus, to the hunt for Jack the Ripper in From Hell, to a version of the Great Gatsby in which the title character appears as a handsome sea horse and his lover Daisy, a dandelion.

These last two novels coming from the pens of panellists featured in this special – so let’s meet Jennifer’s four guests.

Writer and illustrator Nicki Greenberg - who started publishing books when she was 15 years old – though has since, as she says, devoted most of her ink to comics, including six years on the Great Gatsby and, more recently, on a graphic novel interpretation of Hamlet, to be published next year.

Bruce Mustard has been producing graphic stories for over 15 years. His first novel, The Bunker, was published in the US a few years ago, and last year saw the publication of The Sacrifice, an historical novel set in Melbourne on the eve of WWII.

Eddie Campbell is famous in his field, as an artist, writer, innovator and collaborator - with Alan Moore on their epic Ripper study From Hell - through to his often painfully intimate autobiographical works, The Fate of The Artist and Alec.

And finally Sophie Cunningham who is a novelist, publisher and the editor of the literary journal Meaning. Not an expert but an admirer of the graphic novel art form…

Spicks and Specks

Wednesday, 11 August 2010

The ABC wardrobe department have given our teams a makeover for tonight’s Spicks and Specks: Europe Special, which celebrates the music and musicians, both past and present, hailing from the great European Continent.

Behind the desk, host Adam Hills’s lycra bodysuit leaves little to the imagination. Our team captains, Alan Brough channelling Demis Rousso and a Nana Mouskouri-inspired Myf Warhurst, are gearing up their guests; music conductor Richard Gill, Swedish singer songwriter Jens Lekmen and comedians Meshel Laurie and Joe Avati.

Regular games Know Your Product, Substitute and The Final Countdown all have a European twist, and there’s a new game especially for the occasion - Apprentices Masters. Teams must work out the name of popular albums by their cover. However, the covers too have been given a makeover. They’ve been re-painted in the style of a famous European artist.

And to close tonight’s Europa Special, is a live performance from Euro-trash satirists The Bad Father, performing their version of Ah Ha’s classic 80s hit Take On Me.

Spicks And Specks will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, August 12 at 8:00pm

Grand Designs Revisited: Yorkshire

Thursday, 12 August 2010 NEW SERIES

Not everyone gets to live out their childhood dreams, but in 2004 Francis Shaw did exactly that when he bought a crumbling castle on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk register, to restore. Little did he know what he was letting himself and his family in for by taking on this project.

Set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the peel tower dates back to the 15th century and was protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It took months of red tape wrangling before Francis finally got permission to start working on the building, but with the rubble barely cleared, one of the enormous 700-year-old walls collapsed showing just how much of a labour of love this project was going to be.

Two and a half years after Francis and his wife Karen moved in, Kevin McCloud returns to find out that the spiralling costs of restoring the castle has meant the fairytale life is nothing like Francis’s dream.

The Making Of Modern Australia: The Australian Soul

Thursday, 12 August 2010 FINAL

The final of the series looking at changes in the social and cultural fabric of Australia since World War II looks at the Australian soul.

Of all the great shifts since the War, perhaps religion has travelled farthest. In the 1940s and 1950s, Australians dutifully attended church and Sunday school and the church had a firm grip on the Australian soul. But from the late 60s, bad boys and girls were finding spiritual fulfilment elsewhere and the churches struggled to keep up.

Nowadays only about 8 per cent of Australians go to church every Sunday and 18 per cent say they have no religion at all.

In this episode we see an Irish Catholic family who experienced sectarianism first hand in the 1950s, a nun touched by romance during the flower power days of the 1960s, a priest radicalised by the Vietnam War in the 1970s, an Aboriginal woman trying to maintain the ties to traditional beliefs and two Protestant boys, both at the Billy Graham crusades in the 1950s, who embarked on entirely different future paths.

Anatomy Of A Massacre

Thursday, 12 August 2010

On November 12, 1991 an estimated 200 people were shot and killed by the Indonesian military during an independence march in occupied East Timor. Images of the massacre at the Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili, were eventually smuggled out of country and became world news.

The footage along with eyewitness testimony was instrumental in the country gaining independence. But the bodies of the dead protestors were never returned to family members and their location has remained a mystery.

Nearly two decades after the massacre, an elite forensic team from Australia and Argentina begins an investigation to find the mass graves where the victims were secretly buried by the Indonesian military. Grieving relatives may finally have an opportunity to reclaim and bury the bodies of their loved ones. Forensic anthropologist Dr Soren Blau from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine in Melbourne is leading the investigation.

It had taken Dr Blau several years to gain permission from the East Timorese authorities to begin the fieldwork as the investigation is politically sensitive. The findings of the forensic team could solve some unanswered questions about one of the most infamous mass murders of the 20th century. Exactly how many died? Was the massacre a tragic over-reaction by junior soldiers or were senior officers involved? Were there cold-blooded executions of survivors following the shooting at the cemetery?

Cutting edge forensic science reveals new, disturbing evidence about what happened on that fateful day. But the chief mission of the forensic anthropologist is to return the remains to the families of the dead.

With graphic archival material and witness testimonies, Anatomy Of A Massacre also retells the story of the massacre itself. This is a landmark film about one of the most notorious massacres in recent history. It is a unique story that combines modern forensic science with powerful emotion.

Waking The Dead: Sins

Friday, 13 August 2010

DSI Boyd (Trevor Eve) and his Cold Case team investigate the mystery surrounding human remains found in an urban canal, which has links to the murder of a prison governor 15 years before.

Suspicion for the murder of Governor Reading originally fell on two ex-prisoners, Kelleher and Ryan, who had been heard to threaten him.

Boyd and Grace (Sue Johnston) talk to prison psychologist Damian Hooper about Kelleher. Hooper is furious when he discovers that Stella (Felicite Du Jeu) is at his house with his wife, Cathy (Reading’s daughter) and that she has been told about the discovery of her father’s remains.

Spence (Wil Johnson) tracks down Ryan, but he is deranged and Spence can get no sense from him. He also visits the halfway house where Kelleher and Ryan had been living at the time of the murder and realises their alibi for the evening does not stand up.

New Tricks: Spare Parts

Saturday, 14 August 2010 REPEAT

With new evidence, advances in forensics and some slightly unorthodox policing methods, Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman) and her Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS) are back reinvestigating the unsolved murders and cold cases the London Metropolitan Police has long since filed away.

Brought out of early retirement, Jack Halford (James Bolam), Brian Lane (Alun Armstrong) and Gerry Standing (Dennis Waterman) continue to prove that there’s still a place for old-fashioned policing. They may be eccentric, bend the rules, ignore procedure, follow their hunches and take risks, but they get results. It’s down to Superintendent Sandra Pullman to keep her team on the right side of the law.

In the first episode Jack Halford (James Bolam) confronts his nemesis in court when Ricky Hanson (David Troughton) stands trial for his attempted murder, and Gerry Standing (Denis Waterman) faces the consequences of lying to his ‘daughter’ Emily. The team uncovers a shady organ donor racket while reinvestigating the murder of a wealthy businessman who left a three-million-pound fortune to a prostitute.

The Prisoner: Anvil

Saturday, 14 August 2010

See why Sir Ian McKellen received an Emmy nomination recently for his lead role in this captivating mini-series.

Sir Ian delivers another riveting performance as the fear-inducing ‘Number Two’.

Tonight, Two challenges Six (Jim Caviezel) to work for him undercover, spying on other Villagers to root out the 'Dreamers' - people who have dreams of 'another world'.

Six laughs at Two's proposal but accepts his offer - at least this way he might be able to meet other people who believe in the existence of a life outside of The Village.

Six's assignment is a teacher at the local school but when the target realises that ‘Undercovers’ are spying on him, he tries to take his own life. Is this a sign of guilt or innocence?

In an act of artful manipulation Two then turns the tables and asks Six to spy on truck driver, 909, who is acting suspiciously. Six does spy on 909 and realises that he is having an illicit homosexual affair with Two's son, 11-12 (Jamie Campbell).

Meanwhile, Two gives his wife a pill which wakes her up from her coma for the night. We see the deep love and tenderness he has for M2, but he quickly puts her back to sleep when he thinks that someone might be spying on them.

Six realises that the target was not a Dreamer, just an ordinary teacher, scared that no one will believe his innocence. Six despairs but he is given hope when he realises a nurse known as 313 (Ruth Wilson) might be a Dreamer.

His hope quickly turns to fear when she is taken for 'treatment' - something Villagers never return from. Six demands that Two’s son, 11-12, help him save 313 or he’ll go public with the affair. 11-12 kills 909 before his father can find out about them. He then helps Six rescue 313 by enabling him to take on the identity of the murdered 909.

Art Nation

This week Art Nation presents a ‘Design Special’ which looks at ways in which Australian designers are contributing to the world of design.

Art Nation’s host Fenella Kernebone visits the Melbourne-based company Otto & Spike, a company whose work resonates with a new generation of consumers looking for original garments. Otto & Spike is a unique ‘artisan manufacturer’ practising traditional crafts and producing beautiful weaves and knits. The company’s products are the result of a 40-year commitment to knitting and the use of premium Australian and New Zealand lambswool, eschewing the short-life cycle of mass production.

The program also features Malaysian-born, Adelaide-based Khai Liew, a maker of meticulously-crafted furniture. Liew started out as a valuer and conservator of early Australian furniture and was in his mid 40s before he designed his first piece. “Years of taking furniture apart in the restoration process has enabled me to examine and study techniques of furniture construction from various countries and cultures from different artistic movements and centuries, ’’ he says.

Plus Art Nation reviews a new book Wallpaper, which looks at the history of wallpaper design dating back to the 1840s. Australians have had a long love affair with wallpaper. The Historic Houses Trust of NSW has documented that relationship through its substantial wallpaper collection and now a new book. The collection, which dates from around 1840 to the present day, has been amassed from a variety of sources and comprises fragments steamed from walls, rolls left over from papering houses and sample books from local merchants.

To close the show, Melbourne indie-pop outfit Kate Vigo and the Underground Orchestra perform in the Art Nation studio.

Art Nation will be repeated on ABC2 - Sunday, August 08 at 7:00pm

Talking Heads: John and Ros Moriarty

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson is joined by John and Ros Moriarty, the husband and wife team behind the brilliantly coloured artwork on Qantas jumbos.

Their company, Balrinji Design Studio, has grown from a kitchen table operation in 1983 to now being Australia’s leading Indigenous art consultancy working across Australia, Japan, Europe and the USA.

The original concept was to create something to celebrate the dual cultural heritage of their three children – young Indigenous Australians with strong connection to their father’s lineage as well as having a firm foundation in mainstream Australian society.

John Moriarty is one of the Stolen Generation. He was just four years old and living in the Gulf of Carpentaria, when his mother was told he was being taken to school for the day - but they didn’t bring him back. Ros Moriarty is a white woman born into a middle class family in Devonport, Tasmania. They met in Canberra where they were both working as public servants and fell deeply in love.

The story of John and Ros Moriarty is one about a love that crossed the boundaries of young and old, black and white, and stolen and found.

The Wannabes: The Wannabes Are Gonna Be

The Wannabes follows six teens who want to be pop stars even if it means dressing up like fruit and rocking out in a local café!

Episode 1: The Wannabes Are Gonna Be

The series begins as five high school students attend an arts academy boarding school where they assume they’d learn to become pop stars. However, the stuffy academy only teaches the classics: ballet, instrumental music, and Shakespeare. After a contemporary singing battle in the student lounge, the five teens are given one week of detention – working free at the local café!

Fortunately for them, the daughter of the café owner shares the same hopes of becoming a pop star. She talks her dad into letting her and the academy students rock out at the café, but the café owner has his own ideas. He gets the kids to dress up in fruit costumes to promote his latest smoothie creations. Fruit costumes and all, the band is a hit. The owner books them to perform every week but the kids bargain to dress in their own disguises. It’s a deal. Our wannabe pop stars (Alan, Andrew, Drew, Mariah, Sarah and Shaylen) are on their way, until they get caught, that is.

Poh's Kitchen

This week, Poh’s guest in her kitchen is Martin Boetz. Born in Germany, Martin is now the Executive Chef of two restaurants, one in Melbourne and the other in Sydney.

Martin began his cooking career in a western cooking-style kitchen but all that changed once he had eaten at David Thompson’s famous Darley Street Thai restaurant. He began working with David, going on to create his own take on Thai cuisine. Martin’s food has been described as ‘a singular blend of Thai and modern Australian food’ and his restaurants are both popular and universally acclaimed. He loves Thai food because he says it makes him ‘feel good’ and, for him, it’s all about traditional Thai recipes cooked with the best of Australian ingredients.

Fascinated by the balance of the sweet, the sour and the salty in Thai food, Martin cooks two dishes which are all about balance and texture. His Orange Sour Curry is a curry where the paste is cooked off in stock with added vegetables and salmon. This is an interesting, easy curry which is well suited to the home cook. His other dish, a Crispy Fish Salad, is also interesting in that the fish is dried, pulverised and rained into hot oil to create fish with incredible crunch and crispness, the fish is then served with a beautiful Thai salad.

To complement Martin’s dishes Poh cooks Kuih Koci, a coconut-based Malaysian dessert which is shaped and then cooked in a banana leaf.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, August 12 at 6:00pm

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is home to the brightest breakthroughs in technology, innovation and invention.

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: designer & inventor Sally Dominguez, inventor & journalist Christine Kininmonth, and wood worker & teacher Richard Vaughan.

Inventions featured on the program:

Meyerhoffer – by inventor Mark Kelly from NSW

Surfers want to get the most out of the water, but they have to deal with the conditions on any given day. More time on the wave equals more experiences and having more fun, but sometimes that is easier said than done. If only we had a surfboard that gave us the manoeuvrability of a short board but the weight and buoyancy of a long board. Short boards are fun but you can’t really move around on the board or perform tricks, and long boards lack the manoeuvrability to adapt quickly to changing conditions on a wave.

The Meyerhoffer is a hybrid surfboard which combines the best of both long board and short board features. The board is made using light weight epoxy technology. The invention is possibly the most radical design innovation in long boarding for a generation. By incorporating elements of a long board and a short board, each section of the board is optimised for maximum performance, ultimately making the design an incredibly complex and refined shape.

OYSTER SAUNA – by inventor Mike Chambers from QLD

Oysters have been enjoyed throughout history. Current methods of preparing oysters include fresh, steamed, baked, fried or most popularly grilled with flavoured toppings. These methods have existed for many years and there have been no recent advances in the preparation of oysters. As one of the most relished delicacies today, oysters should be prepared and presented as an exciting experience.

The Oyster Sauna is a device to deliver oysters to your restaurant table as well as infusing them with flavours. The invention uses dry ice and a heating element that is placed on a stand. Oysters cook and steam in the sauce, while the sauce aromatics are injected into the room for everyone, including people up to 30 feet away, to smell and enjoy.

PEG IT – by inventor Ross Merkel from VIC

Throughout history people have always had problems hammering in their tent pegs. It’s enough to ruin a family holiday. There must be a better way to insert and remove tent pegs without parents making fools of themselves in front of their giggling children.

The Peg It is a tool to insert tent pegs with ease and to remove them from the ground easily and safely. The hand-held tool incorporates everything you need to insert and remove tent pegs, from a lever hook, to a removal bar, a striker bar and more.

Catalyst

Polypharmacy

Australia is becoming a pill-popping nation. Around 200 million prescriptions are filled every year. Some researchers believe many of these scripts are not only unnecessary –they’re actually making people sicker.

This cocktail of prescribed, over the counter and alternative medications is known as polypharmacy: where patients are on a number of different medications at the same time. The drugs can interact with each other and put people in hospital.

Dr Maryanne Demasi investigates what is being done to manage the problem.

Rat Wars

Introduced species have caused all sorts of problems for Australian natives over the years. Just think rabbits, cane toads - and of course that very early pest: the European Black Rat. It could have slipped ashore even before Captain Cook had time to plant the flag! The black rat’s been particularly devastating for our native bush rat.

Dr Paul Willis finds new research that indicates the bush rat may be capable of holding its own against the invader when in its native bush habitat. In fact, it was the citizens of Sydney who displaced the native rats in the first place as part of an eradication program during the plague of the early 20th century. The challenge now is to remove the black rat from native bushland and establish the natives before more black rats can move in.

Born Again Batteries

Chances are there’s an electronic device within reach that’s powered by battery – your TV remote, mobile phone or wristwatch. Batteries are everywhere in our lives. But they have some significant shortcomings: they don’t deliver power or recharge quickly and they have a limited lifetime.

So how do we make batteries better? Tanya Ha discovers the battery powering the devices of the future may not be a battery at all.

Animal Action - Clever Crows

The New Caledonian crow is one of the few species apart from humans known to manufacture and modify tools. University of Auckland researchers have been testing the reasoning power of wild crows, by giving them complex problems to solve.
