South Pacific: Castaways

Sunday, 9 January 2011

In the South Pacific, there is no such thing as a deserted island. They may be the most isolated in the world, but across this vast region every one of its 20,000 islands has been colonised, from New Guinea – home to birds of paradise and the tribe whose brutal initiation ceremony turns young warriors into ‘crocodile’ men – to Fiji, from French Polynesia to Hawaii.

This is the story of the ultimate castaways (they include saltwater crocodiles, giant eels, crested iguanas and weird frogs) which succeeded against all odds to reach islands thousands of miles apart. These journeys were no mean feats. It has been estimated that an average of one species every 60,000 years made it to Hawaii. Incredibly, many of these colonisers made it to these islands on the back of the most violent forces of nature, like cyclones and tsunamis.

The voyages of the South Pacific’s first people (the Polynesians) were no less remarkable. These journeys were undoubtedly the greatest acts of navigation ever undertaken, and they changed the nature of the South Pacific forever.

Movie: Shine

Sunday, 9 January 2011

The mercurial high point of Australian cinema of the 90s, Shine is a universal phenomenon that touched millions around the world.

Based on the true story of piano prodigy David Helfgott, Scott Hicks’s film traces the volatile journey of the pianist from childhood through to adulthood, detailing David’s troubled relationship with his repressive father, the tragic mental breakdown and eventual resurrection as a brilliant performer.

Graced by the astonishing, Oscar-winning performance of Geoffrey Rush, this is a majestic film experience that attains extraordinary heights of inspiration while miraculously transcending all the Hollywood clichés.

Also starring in the film are Armin Mueller-Stahl, Noah Taylor, Sonia Todd and Justin Braine.

Grumpy Guide To...: Work

Monday, 10 January 2011

Do you remember that rose-tinted pre-grumpy era called youth, when you thought your adult years were going to be filled with fun, laughter and adventure? And then what happened?

Work, that’s what happened; spending most of your life in places you can’t bear, with people you can’t stand, doing stuff that doesn’t matter. Don’t get us started. We examine the whole vile job process from having to write the dreaded CV, to deciphering meaningless management-speak, through to tips on throwing a sickie when it all gets a bit too much.

Written by Mary Ramsay, featuring: Kathryn Flett, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Steve Punt, Stuart Maconie, Arabella Weir, Muriel Gray, Felix Dexter, Mariella Frostrup, Guy Browning, Lynda Bellingham, Jan Ravens, Don Warrington, Alvin Hall, Wayne Hemingway, Nigel Havers, Brian Conley and Carol Smillie.

Lost Adventures Of Childhood

Monday, 10 January 2011

Play, for the sake of play, has disappeared. Where once kids played freely in the streets and alleys of their neighbourhoods, creating their own games and the rules that went with them…. today we have play dates, GPS tracking systems for children and year round organised sports.

It wasn’t that long ago that free play was the order of the day. Kids came home when the lights went on – their parents oblivious to where they’d been and what they were up to. Not anymore. This is the era of the hyper-managed childhood.

Lost Adventures Of Childhood looks at how we got here. And to what end. What does it matter if kids don’t play the old fashioned way? According to the scientists who make their living studying the subject – everything from literacy and creativity to social acumen and mental health is suffering. It turns out what we once thought of as simply idle, wasted time, is nothing less than nature’s way of making sure kids learn.

Rick Stein’s Taste Of The Italian Opera

Tuesday, 11 January 2011

What do the spirited and robust scores of Italian opera and the infinite joys of the country’s food have in common?

Chef Rick Stein heads to Italy to find out.

In this colourful special, top chef Rick Stein takes a light-hearted look at the role that food played in the creation of Italian opera and shows how music and food are intrinsically linked in Italy.

He draws parallels between cooking and composing, noting how both involve the skilful combination of ingredients and how they share the common purpose of bringing pleasure to many, and lifting the human spirit.

Rick also explains why he thinks the music of three great Italian composers, Verdi, Puccini and Rossini, is connected to the food of the regions where they lived and worked.

All were passionate about the delights of the dining table. Puccini loved the simple dishes from his native Tuscany, Verdi had his own farm, and many extravagant dishes are named after notorious gourmand Rossini.

Travelling the trattorias of northern Italy and talking to academics, singers and conductors, Rick uncovers the deep relationship between creativity and convivial cuisine.

To The Manor Bowen: Lairy Christmas

Tuesday, 11 January 2011 Final

It’s now seven months since the Llewelyn-Bowens first arrived in the village which they’ve christened Poshington, and although broke, they have succeeded in transforming their tired, run-down manor house into a very special family home.

We look back at their momentous year and watch as they create some Christmas magic in the run up to the festive season. Laurence instructs the family on the finer intricacies of bauble decorating and Jackie provides the merriness, with her homemade sloe gin.

We see the Llewelyn-Bowens on their Christmas present trolley dash round Fortnum and Mason and Jackie succumbing to the stresses of festive preparations, as she tries to involve the girls in baking Christmas tree decorations.

Laurence also has a surprise for Jackie. He invites celebrated artist Sheree Valentine Daines to immortalise her in oil so that the manor house gets a matching pair of Llewelyn-Bowen portraits for its walls.

To help the Bowens look back at the whirlwind that has been their existence since moving to the countryside, the builders, gardeners, raffle winners and friends reflect on the experiences that they’ve shared together.

As the halls of the manor get decked out in Christmas finery, the Bowens glam up as special guests of honour at a Christmas charity ball, and the whole of Cirencester turns out in force to watch Laurence and family switch on the Christmas lights. The series closes with one final intriguing Bowen twist, which will leave viewers guessing.

Wednesday, 12 January 2011

Joining QI master Stephen Fry tonight are Alan Davies, Bill Bailey, Phill Jupitus and David Mitchell.

This week’s show has a very distinctive Chinese flavour. Each of the panellists is shown what their names mean in Chinese.

The topics for this week include – inventions beginning with ‘C’ that come from Corby: what is the connection between Corby, an enormous amount of porridge and the planet Mars?

Porridge actually comes from China which leads Stephen Fry to his next question – what quite interesting material are Chinese houses made from?

The Trophy Room

Wednesday, 12 January 2011

When it comes to sport The Trophy Room host, Peter Helliar, has runs on the board.

A self-confessed ‘sports nut’, the Collingwood six-footer played AFL for over a decade for his local club St Damian’s and school, Parade College, and still enjoys social games of basketball, tennis and golf.

But while he lists cricket as one of his strongest topics and once was in awe of the master blaster, Viv Richards, and Australian fast bowler, Craig McDermott, he claims to lack the patience to play cricket.

“My first four innings were ducks because I was swinging like the proverbial dunny door – I’d get out LBW trying to smash it from outside off stump over square leg’s head,” he says.

Peter once won Australia’s Brainiest Comedian – with The Godfather trilogy as his speciality topic.

“Not sure how many Coppola questions will surface on The Trophy Room,” he quips.

Peter’s first job was an usher at the MCG – working AFL and cricket games as well as concerts.

“It was pretty cool. The bit I didn’t love was going on the ground after the game to make sure young scallywags didn’t run on.

“Little did they know I had no intention of running anyone down. I don’t run for trains and I don’t chase 15-year-olds on an oval in front of 60,000 people, especially when there is a giant screen!”

Please note there is no preview DVD for this program.

The Bionic Vet

Thursday, 13 January 2011

In the second episode of this six-part series looking at the work of pioneering veterinary surgeon, Noel Fitzpatrick and his team, bionic solutions continue to offer family pets the best chance of a better life.

Although only just over a year old, labrador Charlie is already living on borrowed time. An aggressive cancerous tumour is eating away part of his front leg. His owners, Louise and Mick, have turned to Noel for help.

Charlie’s owners are in the military and deal with soldiers who have lost limbs in battle. They are totally behind Noel’s decision to remove the tumour and replace it with a custom made implant that exactly mirrors Charlie’s diseased bone - making him truly bionic - part metal, part dog. There’s a tense moment as Noel checks Charlie’s x-ray but the implant is perfectly positioned.

Moving from the issue of bone cancer to the more common arthritis, the survival of seven-year-old border collie Sasha is at stake as Noel sets about giving her a new bionic knee. Sasha’s owner Sara would do anything to save her beloved pet.

Meanwhile, senior surgeon Michael Hamilton is challenged by his smallest patient to date, Zippy the chinchilla. Zippy has broken both the tiny bones in his front leg after falling from a shelf.

Michael needs to come up with an ingenious solution to secure them back together. The chinchilla’s bones are so tiny that he has to improvise with a spinal needle to complete the procedure.

Noel Fitzpatrick and his team’s pioneering revolutionary surgical techniques save and improve the lives of thousands of family pets. Rebuilding animals using a whole range of metal implants alongside their groundbreaking procedures means for many of the animals it’s their last hope.

In the coming weeks viewers will see family pets undergoing a wide range of reconstructive surgery. Many will have their lives transformed by a mind boggling array of bionic implants. It’s an emotional roller coaster for the owners and a real challenge in terms of bravery and perseverance.

Ashes To Ashes

Thursday, 13 January 2011 New Series

It’s time to get your shoulder pads out of storage, start crimping your hair and get into the Eighties mood for the very last time… as this multi-award-winning drama returns for its highly anticipated finale.

Series two of Ashes To Ashes ended on a cliffhanger, with Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) accidentally shooting Detective Inspector Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes), the delightful thorn in his derriere. Ever since, fans have been eager to know whether Alex has survived and, with everyone thinking he shot her deliberately, how will Hunt dig himself out of that hole?

This series finally unravels many of the mysteries from the previous two series, as well as those first experienced by the initial time-travelling copper, Sam Tyler, in the groundbreaking series Life on Mars.

There’s also a new and unsettling twist to the team dynamic, in the form of Discipline and Complaints Officer, Jim Keats (Daniel Mays), who implies that Hunt’s involvement in Sam Tyler’s death was suspicious.

Will Alex finally discover why she has been sent back in time to the 1980s? Does anything tie Alex and Sam Tyler together? And who exactly is Gene Hunt…?

Thrilling, mysterious and supremely funny, the conclusion of this extremely popular series contains the same successful combination of crime drama, outrageous Eighties outfits and cutting one-liners – plus a finale that is one of the most exciting, compelling and edge-of-your-seat rides on TV.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A Kudos Film and Television production in association with Monastic Productions for BBC. Executive Producers: Jane Featherstone, Simon Crawford Collins, Alison Jackson, Ashley Pharoah, Matthew Graham, Piers Wenger.

Chopper Rescue

Friday, 14 January 2011 New Series

From the ocean to the outback, helicopter rescue crews save lives and face near death challenges every day. Chopper Rescue follows the work of the doctors, paramedics, rescue officers and aircrews who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They cover huge distances across Queensland, from the remote outback and tropics to the outermost limits of The Great Barrier Reef.

Working in difficult remote locations and in cramped conditions in mid air, the doctors and paramedics safely deliver patients to hospital and along the way deliver hospital-standard care.

Chopper Rescue is genuine life and death human drama.

This week the Chopper Rescue team attend two emergencies in outback Queensland.

A seven-year-old boy needs intensive emergency care after riding his motor bike into a barbed wire fence on a farming property, while in south-west central Queensland a 75-year-old sugar cane farmer is close to losing his life after being trapped in an irrigation ditch under his over-turned tractor.
