Foyle's War: The Hide

Sunday, 23 May 2010 Final

The British Free Corps were a bizarre collection of misfits and traitors... Englishmen fighting for the Nazis. The third and final episode of Foyle’s War, The Hide, takes a closer look at this splinter group and raises the themes of loyalty to king and country and family ties as the newly retired Foyle (Michael Kitchen) battles to save a young man from the executioner’s noose, in his most personal case yet...

At last the day that Foyle has been waiting for has arrived. A replacement has been chosen and Christopher Foyle can walk out of Hastings Police Station, his tenure as Detective Chief Superintendent finally over.

However, when he spots the headline in a national paper about a member of a distinguished Hastings family sentenced to hang for treason he realises that he might have one last case to explore before he starts afresh.

Foyle visits James Deveraux (Andrew Scott) in his cell and what follows are a series of mysterious meetings between a damaged young man intent on self-destruction and Foyle, who will not give up on him.

In another part of Hastings, Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) and Adam (Max Brown) have battles of their own to fight: Hill House is suffocating under mounting debts and the dark shadow of the town planners whose vision of Hastings is everything that Hill House is not – so it has to go. Working together, they finally manage to secure the future of the guest house when disaster strikes and a huge explosion destroys all their hard work. Will Sam and Adam find happiness amid the ruins and debris of their shared enterprise?

Meanwhile the clock is ticking as Foyle desperately searches for any evidence to clear James Deveraux’s name. What becomes apparent is that this case means more to Foyle than any he has previously undertaken and what he discovers shatters him to the core.

Time Team: The Isle Of Mull

Tuesday, 25 May 2010

Tony Robinson, Professor Mick Aston and Co. descend upon the Scottish island of Mull at the invitation of two local amateur archaeologists. They are desperate for the team to investigate a mysterious set of earthworks they’ve stumbled upon in a forest near the fabled town of Tobermory. They believe – or at least hope – that they may have discovered one of the earliest chapels in Scotland.

To their amazement, the team quickly come to agree. They suspect they may be investigating the remains of a chapel set up by none other than Saint Columba. If they’re right they may have found a previously unknown outpost of the Irish priest who brought Christianity to the north of Britain - a once in a lifetime discovery.

But it’s a dig fraught with setbacks. Mull isn’t the easiest place in the British Isles to get to and even then the location is remote, the journey to it on foot is arduous and when the archaeologists recover human remains there are fears that, under Scottish law, the site will have to be closed down as a potential crime scene.

But over three days the dig on Mull turns out to be one of the most rewarding and revealing in the program’s history. It sheds new light on a lost period of Scottish history, discovers a previously unknown monastery and most extraordinary of all, uncovers the remains of a lost Saint.

Poh's Kitchen

Wednesday, 26 May 2010

What’s the secret to cooking the perfect roast? Poh has mastered many exotic dishes and cooking styles, but she’s strangely intimidated when it comes to something as straightforward as meat and three veg. She’s determined to master the art of roasting, so this week her guest in the kitchen is the master of meat, Neil Perry.

Poh knows that only the best ingredients will satisfy Neil, so she jets off to Tasmania in search of remarkable produce. In the Northwest she visits Cape Grim and talks to two farmers who raise grass-fed cows in a spectacular spot which boasts the purest air in the world. Poh also meets Jamie Oliver, although it’s not the chef but rather his cow-breeding double. She is delighted to hear that the art of treating cattle quietly and gently produces the best meat.

Poh then experiences a graphic demonstration of the challenges of breeding cows. A crisis occurs - a cow’s struggling in labour and in need of help. Farmer Richard Nichols intervenes just in time, and Poh is privileged to witness the remarkable spectacle of a calf being ‘pulled’.

Further east Poh meets Lee Christmas, a bloke who left his promising cooking career on the mainland in search of a fuller life and a deeper understanding of where food comes from. He now raises a rare breed of pig which is in danger of extinction, the Wessex Saddleback. He tells Poh that ironically the best chance we have of saving these pigs is to eat them. Lee then demonstrates the art of butchering a pig and tells Poh that ‘you can eat every part of a pig but the oink.’

Back in Poh’s kitchen, Neil cooks an incredibly tender and moist slow-roasted rib of beef, which he finishes with an amazing red wine reduction – or what Poh calls “a pretty kick-ass gravy.” Not to be outdone, Poh shows Neil an old family favourite, pork belly with wood ear fungus and fermented bean curd - a slightly challenging name for a truly delicious dish.

Voyage To The Planets

Thursday, 27 May 2010

Blast-off with Voyage To The Planets: an Australian made documentary series exploring the pleasures and pitfalls of travel to the alien planets of our own solar system.

Narrated by Richard Roxburgh, this series visits the planets from a very personal perspective: that of the people who have sent probes hurtling to strange worlds, and also from the viewpoint of any one of us who might dream of making a trip ourselves.

In episode three, take a trip to planetary pin-up boy, Saturn, and not only do you get a ringside seat to the greatest spectacle in the solar system, but a close encounter with two extraordinary moons. Tiny Enceladus is making all the headlines as the must-see moon these days. It’s the little moon that has it all: enormous geysers of water and ice shooting into space from the South Pole point to a warm salty ocean beneath the surface and, perhaps, a real possibility of life. Even more Earth-like and yet far more alien is Titan, with a thick atmosphere and weather. Potentially an easier surface to explore even than Mars, this is the only other world we know that you could visit without a spacesuit. Rug up for the cold and fly a hot air balloon in Titanian skies, trek across vast dune fields, or row across a Titanian lake. Just don’t fall in or get caught in the rain: it’s liquid natural gas out here, not water, and it’ll freeze you as hard as rock.

The American Future: A History By Simon Schama: American Plenty

Thursday, 27 May 2010 New Series

After 9/11, Katrina and Baghdad, the robustness of American optimism is struggling to reassert itself against the sobering reality of military frustration and domestic anxieties. This is an America grappling with an un-American sense of its own limits.

Eminent historian Simon Schama turns to fascinating moments in American history to understand the present. In the first episode of the series he explores how American optimism about the infinite possibilities of its land and resources is in danger of coming to a grinding halt. Nowhere is this more evident than the American West, which has always been a symbol of opportunity and freedom. Oil at $4 a gallon may be dominating the headlines, but here it’s the lack of water that’s an even bigger threat to the American future. The West is in the grip of a nine-year drought.

America’s optimism about its natural resources has always been spiced with clashes over conservation, going back to the first man to navigate the Colorado River, John Wesley Powell. American ingenuity made farming on an industrial scale possible in the early years of the 20th century but at the cost of making Oklahoma a dustbowl. The building of the Hoover Dam, a modern American miracle, which provided essential irrigation for farming and for the new city of Las Vegas, now no longer supplies enough water for both.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan’s optimism about American plenty defeated Jimmy Carter’s campaign for self-restraint but in the 2008 election, neither candidate could ignore the challenges facing America as it enters an era of limits.

Midsomer Murders: Murder On St Malley's Day

Saturday, 29 May 2010

Midsomer Parva’s exclusive Devington School is the scene of a sinister society, called the Pudding Club, open only to those elite students who aspire to the Diplomatic Service.

One of the contenders, Daniel Talbot (Sam Crane) is fatally stabbed while running in the school’s annual St Malley’s Day race. His father, Anthony Talbot (Jeremy Child) scion of the school’s founding fathers, bizarrely points the finger at the villagers. Barnaby (John Nettles) and Troy (Daniel Casey) however, are more interested in the events of the Pudding Club and its mysterious rituals and its stash of antiques and relics.

The murder victim was reluctantly in the running for a Club scholarship but he was also involved with a village girl, Julia Carter, with whom he had planned to run away after he ran the school’s race.

Disaffected school old boy Dudley Carew (Patrick Godfrey) urges them to look to the school for the murderer. But he is dispatched and then another body of an old Devingtonian surfaces. The plot thickens and secrets of the school’s dark history are put under the spotlight.

Art Nation

This week Art Nation looks at two major Australian exhibitions.

Fenella Kernebone visits a major retrospective of the work of Rupert Bunny at the National Gallery of Victoria. Bunny was one of the most successful artists of his generation. Living most of his life in France, no other Australian artist has achieved the accolades Bunny received in Paris in the 1890s and 1900s. This visually stunning exhibition, the first since 1991, includes over 100 works from symbolist-inspired mythologies to his elegant Belle Epoque paintings of fashionable Parisian leisure.

Bushfire Australia examines the recurrence of bushfire imagery in the work of Australian artists. The exhibition draws on works from state, public and private collections, as well as contemporary art produced in direct response to the 2009 Victorian fires. The annual looming threat of bushfire has now become ingrained in the Australian psyche, its potential devastation and destruction etched into the memories of all those who have witnessed one. TarraWarra Museum of Art is an appropriate venue for this exhibition, the fires having come within several hundred metres of the property.

To close the program, indie folk group, TinPan Orange, perform in the Art Nation studio.

Talking Heads: Paula Constant

This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson’s guest is an adventurer who believes ‘everywhere is in walking distance... if you have the time’.

Paula Constant has walked more than 12,000 kilometres across eight countries in Europe and Africa. She’s walked further across the Sahara Desert than any other expedition.

It all started when Constant and her husband, Gary, decided to break out of the conventional ‘nine to five’ routine and have one last adventure before settling down and starting a family. Before the walk began in 2004, Constant had no expedition or adventure experience, and was working as a primary school teacher in London, where she lived with Gary for several years. The walk took over three years to plan and save for.

But, when their relationship fell apart en route, Constant chose to keep going for thousands of miles!

Constant reveals why she refused to give up on her dream trek, how she coped with the hazards and hardships along the way, and went on an unexpected journey of self discovery.

Artscape: Silly & Serious: William Robinson And Self-Portraits

One of Australia’s leading landscape artists, William Robinson has twice won the Archibald Prize for his self-portraits. Silly & Serious presents Robinson at work, playing Debussy on his piano, and discussing his work; his love for old Laurel and Hardy movies; how humour and sadness can exist in the same portrait.

As he works and plays, Robinson talks about his art, both past and present. The focus is on his self-portraits - work that is serious, yet wears many masks, including the influence of the humour of Laurel and Hardy, a recurring theme throughout the film.

Robinson is a serious, highly literate and cultured Australian artist. The spiritual gravity of his large landscapes stretch time and space. He is widely regarded as having extended the range of this great theme in Australian art. A long-time teacher, he speaks eloquently about many aspects of art.

Yet his self-portraits are also masks of silliness and conscious irony, both funny and sly. Robinson has deliberately ‘taken on’ the Archibald Prize at its own game and won it twice, both times with self-portraits.

Shot in Paris and various locations in Australia, Silly & Serious is a compelling and entertaining view of a celebrated Australian artist, seen mainly through his enigmatic self-portraits.

The New InventorsHosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the latest contemporary creations from the new generation of inventors, innovators and designers. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: inventor and journalist Christine Kininmonth, engineer James Bradfield Moody, and woodworker and teacher Richard Vaughan. Inventions featured on the program:

OUTBACK POWER PACK – by inventor Jim Thomson from WA

In the outback there's a lot of space, but not a lot of electricity. Connecting the vast outback to the electricity grid is not practical for a small population, but people in remote Australia want to watch television too! If you want power in a remote area you have two options. You can truck in a big diesel generator or install renewable energy such as wind or solar. But simply getting the right technicians to come out to the bush can be prohibitively expensive.

The Outback Power Pack is a fully contained renewable energy power system. The invention is delivered to your property with the installation nearly completed. All that is required on site is to fit the solar panels and/or wind turbine, connect the system to your premises and switch on the power. This invention is not only simpler and cheaper than current practices, it also encourages the use of renewable energy, which benefits us all.

KLEVAKLIP – by inventor Allan Holland from QLD

There’s nothing like a timber deck for whiling away the summer, and reminiscing about the good old times. But some of those decks may have seen better days. Timber decking tends to warp over time, exacerbated by the nails used to hammer it down, which rust and allow moisture to penetrate the wood. As the deck deteriorates it becomes unsightly and even unsafe, creating a tripping risk, or even a chance of the deck collapsing.

The KlevaKlip is a multi-board fixing system that provides consistent gapping of the boards. As each board is inserted into the KlevaKlip, it tightens the previous board, providing significant holding power. With this invention, the boards can be secured without nails, so the wood can be preserved significantly longer.

WHEELIE MATE STAND – by inventors David Crosbie and Rob White from VIC

Where would we be without wheelie bins? Probably all at the chiropractor after a lifetime of carrying heavy garbage bins out to the street. Yet as helpful as they are, wheelie bins do have problems. They can easily be knocked over by wind, storms, cars, uneven terrain, or passing drunks in the night. And when garbage bins are knocked over it's not a pretty sight.

David and Rob both work in the domestic waste collection industry, so they deal with the problem of toppled bins daily. Having to constantly get down from the truck and pick up people’s rubbish was starting to get on their nerves, so they decided it was time to invent a solution. The Wheelie Mate Stand stabilises wheelie bins so they cannot fall over, so now neither you nor the council workers are left to pick up the mess.

Catalyst

Mt Ruapehu

Disaster movies depict the dangers of a volcano as red-hot rivers of lava pouring over unprotected villages or a rain of ash and boulders from a catastrophic explosion. But New Zealand’s deadliest volcano kills with lahars, flows of water and volcanic debris, that combine to form a dense fast-moving mud capable of taking out a bridge or smothering a ski field in seconds.

Mount Ruapehu is New Zealand’s largest active volcano. It’s also a popular skiing and hiking destination – good reasons to be able to predict when it will erupt again – and with as much warning as possible. Paul Willis visits volcanologists closely monitoring the volcano in order to predict when it may go off.

Clever Cancer

While looking into the epigenome of prostate cancer, geneticists at Sydney’s Garvan Institute have discovered that cancer is more complex and sophisticated than previously thought.

Cancer tumours have now been revealed as clever and dedicated entities that can change their environment to suit a single purpose – to grow. Dr Maryanne Demasi explores this new knowledge and asks whether it may provide the key to more effective treatments.

Dr Craig Venter

Dr Craig Venter is renowned for taking on the scientific establishment in a race to write the human genetic code. His once controversial fast-track approach to sequencing DNA was adopted as an industry standard and in 2007 he was the first to publish the complete genome of a human being – himself.

Graham Phillips discovers that Dr Venter is now tantalisingly close to an equally, if not more remarkable achievement – genuinely intelligent design. The implications could see machines replaced with biology.

Finch Fight

In the stunning landscape of the Kimberley a fight has broken out between the Gouldian finch, the pin up bird of the aviary, and the long tailed finch, a hardy little battler. Researchers from Macquarie University are using CCTV cameras and clever tactics to keep the peace.
