This set of Wintery Mix word cards will provide you with several differentiated activities for use in your first and second grade literacy centers.

* Level One: alphabetical order by first letter (blue frame cards)* Level Two: alphabetical order to second letter (combine blue and green frame cards) * Level Three: alphabetical order (combine blue, green, and red frame cards)

Suggested activities:

* With a partner: Shuffle and deal all of the cards. Each player spreads his cards out face up in front of him. Players then work together to make one long alphabetical line, taking turns looking at their own cards and helping each other as needed to find the card that comes next. If a player doesnt have the next card, he passes. The first player to use all of his or her cards wins.

* With a partner or alone, children will enjoy placing the cards in order by using clothespins to clip the cards to a yarn clothesline - also good for small motor development!

* A student recording sheet has been included for assessment purposes.

Hint: Some children will benefit from the support of having an alphabet chart nearby for reference.

Teacher Preparation: Print the cards, cut apart, and laminate for durability. Copy sufficient recording sheets for your needs.
