PROGRESS UPDATEWelcome to the latest Lane End Group newsletter. Within the next few pages you’ll receive the very latest news on what’s happening on our Abbey Road site.

This is the third publication we have issued, and the first of the New Year.

We’re close to 12 months on this scheme and it seems a lifetime ago since we first broke ground and plunged the first spade into the earth to signal the start of our project. A great deal of hard work from the site team and our subcontractors has gone into 2019 and overall, we are pleased with what we have achieved.

In any construction, one of the most important jobs that we want to complete as quickly as possible is the installation of the roads and sewers. The construction of new roads on housing estates such as this is the responsibility of the contracting developer (in other words, us). In a large development this may take some time to complete and it’s certainly been the case here in Sandbach. The weather has significantly impacted us in this regard, and although the job is not complete, we’re well on our way.

The site compound is now on ‘live’ service feeds which means we don’t have to use noisy generators and just makes our lives a bit easier! Completion of the floor slabs is moving beyond the dates that we initially had in the programme, but the good news is that the erection of the houses is progressing well.

Those neighbours who will be following our site activity from the surrounding houses will know that we’ve sectioned off a portion of the site for our resident badgers. We’re liaising with the relevant authorities and urban partners to ensure we consider our furry friends.

We are committed to the Considerate Constructors Scheme. This places heavy weight on what we do in the community and at the moment, badgers are part of that.

We’ve even taken the innovative step of introducing ‘Lane End badger monitoring’ in the form of a web cam. This picks up images of badgers in the public open space area only and we can see them are all doing well.

In other site activity, we have some works where locals may notice some slight disruption as we instructed sub-contractors to lay the services. This will affect the existing footpath on the east side of Abbey Road. Our team has issued a flyer letter in advance.

We’re in regular contract with residents and you will know that our site door is always open for you to come and chat with us.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

FOODBANK SUPPORT: MIDDLEWICH & DISTRICT FOODBANK We have and will continue to make regular donations to our most local foodbank donation point which services Sandbach Methodist Church. This is the local foodbank open to this community.

We have food collection boxes on site for team members to get involved throughout the year. The New Beginnings team receives a list of essential items to purchase from foodbank and we ensure that this is funded on a regular basis throughout the year.

SANDBACH HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS EVENTS:We have now attended two Careers Carousel Events at Sandbach High School in the summer and autumn terms.

The events gave the pupils - aged 11- 19 ideas and guidance on different careers in industries across the board, with Lane End representing the Construction Industry at large.

The pupils were interested to hear about our specific site, as well at the roles needed to ensure its smooth running and delivery throughout the pre-construction and build process.

We also helped with interview technique and guidance on broader subjects such as CV writing and preparing yourself for the workplace, drawing on our own experiences and knowledge.

Throughout the two events we have spoken to well over 300 pupils and feedback from the school has been extremely positive.

We will continue to support the school’s careers programme throughout the time we are on site.

LANE END TAKES THE PLEDGE: Lane End have signed up to The Pledge Partnership which puts employers at the heart of inspiring, informing and communicating with the next generation of employees across Cheshire.

The Pledge Partnership enables businesses to work together with educators to provide every young person living, studying and/or working in Cheshire and Warrington with everything they need to succeed in the world of work.

With the opportunity to develop employability-related skills and personal qualities whilst in education, there is a choice of employment, training or further education when they leave school.

Employers can work directly with young people, teachers, parents, carers and youth workers to help the local community identify the employment opportunities available.

We will be using this site at Sandbach to facilitate learning and employment opportunities in construction through this initiative and look forward to helping the Construction Professionals of the future.

SANDBACH UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB: We are delighted to support Sandbach United Football Club. Their facility is directly next to our site here at Abbey Road so it seemed only right that we support our neighbours in any way we can. We have made a donation to the club to help with their fantastic community events which really epitomise what Lane End New Beginnings is all about - bringing local people together for the good of the local area.

They run seasonal socials as well as their weekly sporting programmes and make sure that every member of the community is welcome and catered for, especially youngsters in a nurturing and friendly environment.

We hope our donation helps they to continue their great work among the Sandbach community.

CVS & LANE END TEAM UP:We are pleased to be working in partnership with Community & Volunteering Services to discover more not for profit and charitable organisations that we can lend a hand with.

Our Community work is ongoing throughout the duration of this development and we actively encourage members of our local community to get in touch if they know of a suitable project at [email protected]

LANE END'S BADGER CAMFrom day one on our Abbey Road site we’ve been working ‘in harmony’ with a clan of badgers, says Project Manager Richard Ikin.

As soon as Lane End identified there were two setts (badgers homes) on our site we’ve been liaising with the local council and our environment, arboriculture and ecology partners, Urban Green, to ensure we do the right thing by our furry friends.

“This may sound funny but it’s very true, we’re working very much in cooperation with the badgers,” Richard said.

“We know they are there and vice versa. From this picture we can confirm that they are going about their own business without any issues.

“Every time we need to work where their sett is we notify the environment clerk of works and they oversee everything we do.

“There existence here is not stopping us from what we are doing so we’re getting on with the job.

“To make sure we haven’t disturbed them we’ve set up an innovative badger cam and for the first time last week we managed to get this picture and a video (which we’ll share on social media) which shows the badgers are happy - one of them even came to investigate our camera!”
